Nicole had worked a double today, Jace was with his father until tomorrow. While he was gone Nicole tried her best to pack in as much work as she could, as well as any house chores. That way she could spend more time focused on him when they were together. However today she had wished she had taken the second shift, they got slammed at lunch and it seemed to have stayed busy for the majority of the evening. Though it had finally started to slow down.

Just as she was about to do her cash a group of ten walked in, and even though she had insisted Emma let her take it she was glad she had refused. She couldn’t wait to get out of her work clothes but she always felt bad leaving Emma working. Emma was older then her but she always felt like they were kindred spirits. She was easy to talk to and seemed to be one of the few people who had really got what she had gone through. She was standing at the end of the bar finishing up her cash when Emma’s son walked, “Shit..” She breathed out, only now remembering he would be coming to pick up his mom. “Hey Lawson, Im so sorry your mom just picked up another table. I don’t think she’ll be done for a while. Can grab you a coffee or water or something?” She asked feeling a little guilty.

Avery was deep in one of her textbooks upon Nicole’s return, she had an end of year exam coming up so was using whatever free time she had to re-read over the material she’d been studying all year. Her head lifted up as she heard the familiar voice and the brunette smiled as she began to close the book in her lap. “You’re okay, I was happy to help.” With the book now closed, Avery pushed herself to her feet and put everything away in her backpack. “Did you find the spare set okay?” Her gaze moved between Nicole and the car for a second before focusing back on the blonde.

Nicole smiled at the young girl, holding up the key and shaking them a bit. “I did have to break into my house to get them but we are good to go now.” She chuckled. She walked over to where her car was parked and slide the key into the door and heard the satisfying sound of the looks clicking open. “Come on I’ll give you a ride home.” She smiled pulling the car door open leaning over the top of it while she waited for Avery. “I was thinking of stopping to grab myself a iced coffee or something, it was a bit of work out getting into my house. Let me at least get you something as a thank you.” She offered.

He wasn’t sure when the habit of lingering inside the comfort of a diner began. Something about being there reminded him of a piece of himself he had lost many years ago. The only downside of it was that he often felt like a nuisance to those who served him. He made it a habit to tip well, but even that didn’t stifle the guilt. Jacob cracked a small smile at her question and he rubbed the back of his neck out of habit. “Oh that,” he started and shrugged casually. “Just writing. Or trying to, I guess I should say. Never writing anything too promising,” he chuckled, even if it was just modesty. In reality, Jacob was working on finishing a novel for somebody else. “Just more of a reason why you should kick me out more often.”

Nicole smiled and leaned back against her car as she listened to him talk about his writing. “You know for whatever reason, I don’t believe. There’s no way you would want to sit in Bobby Jay’s all night long if you weren’t working on something at least a little promising.” She laughed, “So what is it? A book? Journal entries? Blog” She said semi teasing at the end. “I usually don’t like to kick out costumers, especially ones that happen to be nice. It’s dinner so we get our fair share of asshole customers.” She admitted. Though it wasn’t like the majority of there customers were bad, it was just pert of working in the service industry.

Beau put the cigarette down for a moment, but once the air of the Salty Dogs filled his lungs he had pursed his lips around it again almost immediately. He was trying to be good. He was trying to be normal. All Beau wanted was to be able to hang with his friends the way they always had, and the way almost everyone did their age. He was just trying to resist the urge to indulge himself too much. He was suppose to have Andon tomorrow night and a heavy hangover wouldn’t be any good. He decided that he could ease himself through the high that came with chain smoking instead of knocking back shots like his friends were. 

As Beau looked around the bar, he caught a familiar face. He didn’t think anything of it until he looked again with a squint and he sucked in a small fuck! as he took a deep inhale. He scrambled to keep himself behind one of his friends but it wasn’t a very good attempt at hiding. He may have been thin, but Beau was just as much tall as he was lanky. His eyes peered over his friend’s shoulder with ease.

Nicole was trying her best to be a wingman for her friend. Her co-worker had dragged her out and she had thought about saying no but she hated when she was home alone. Jace was at his fathers for the night, so she figured a couple beers would distract her. Brittany had set her sights on some blonde guy, and begged Nicole to help her out by talking to his friend. Now they were playing pool each on a team with one of the guys whose names she couldn’t remember for the life of her. Brittany and the guy she liked on one team and her and his friend on the other. He wasn’t horrible looking, he had light brown hair and was above average height and slightly muscular. The problem was that he was a bit of douche who kept trying to put his hand on her ass. She chugged back the rest of her beer before going into Britts purse and grabbing her pack of smokes. “I’ll be right back.” She excused herself, needing a small break from putting on a fake smile and avoiding the guys hands.

Nicole had quit smoking when she found out she was pregnant with Jace, but every once in a while when she was out drinking, and wasn’t going home to Jace she would sneak a few smokes in. She leaned against the wall while she lit her cigarette, thats when she saw a familiar lanky figure not too far from her. He steeped behind someone so she couldn’t be sure, besides it seemed a little strange that Beau would be at a bar. “Beau? Is that you?” She asked as she walked over to group he was huddled in.

Tobias didn’t blink an eye at the fact the woman had named her car, or was talking to it right in front of him as if it were a pet. He understood; naming his cars wasn’t his thing, but when he was working on them he sometimes found himself talking to them, gently coaxing them to work. It was a mindless habit he had developed long ago from the many hours a mechanic could spend working on cars alone. He chuckled at her relief and resulting apology to her car for practically kicking it’s wheels while it was down. “No problem, I haven’t been backed up today. Betsy should be waiting for you first thing in the morning.” He threw the tools he was holding into his toolbox that sat next to the car. “I am surprised that I won’t have to use duct tape to keep her going for you, but there’s something special about old cars.”

“Oh thats perfect, just give me a call in the morning when I can come get it and I’ll come get it.” She smiled, she couldn’t believe he was actually able to keep her car running. She did okay when it came to money, but she was a single mom supporting herself and her son on tips and waitress salary. Getting a new car wasn’t exactly in the budget. “Well I won’t lie, I have used duct tape on this car before.. My side mirror came off, I wont say how, but I duct taped it back on for a couple months.” She admitted. “As much as I would like a fancy new car, I do actually sort of love this car. So you are seriously my saviour.” It was the first car she had bought herself, her parents had of course boughten her fancy car but when she left them behind that meant also leaving her car. She had been so proud of herself when she had saved up enough to buy a car all on her own.

“Thanks.” She smiled with a nod as Nicole began to walk away from her. “See you soon.” With that Avery took a seat on the ground beside Nicole’s car and opened up on of her textbooks. She made herself comfortable, leaning back against her car and pulling her legs so she was sat crossed-legged before she started reading.

It was a short cab ride back to her place, “I’ll be right back!”she let the driver know. Of course when she got to the door she realized she didn’t have keys to get in. “Fuck..” Standing there for a moment jiggling the door knob like it might magically unlock. After some consideration she went around to her house until she found a window that was open. using one of her patio chairs from out back she boosted herself through the window. Getting stuck only for a second and getting dirt all on the front of her shirt, clearly she needed to clean her window sills she made it safely inside. She ran and grabbed her spare set of keys from the kitchen drawer and quickly ran back out to the front where the cab driver was honking his horn. “Sorry! I’m here, I’m here!” She called before hoping back into the cab and heading back to her car. Soon they were pulling up beside Avery who was waiting for her. “Im sorry that took so long, you are seriously the sweetest.” She sighed as she got out of the car.

It was really nothing, and he had to admit he was lucky more than anything. There were times when he was younger, standing outside till 3AM as he attempted that little shoe string trick for hours on his locked car. Practice paid off, he supposed. “No, no. You don’t owe me-” he began to wave it off before he got a look at her as she looked up from retying her shoe. No wonder he felt inclined to help her. He sort of knew her. From the amount of times she had waited on him, it was a shame he couldn’t remember her name. He tried to visualize her name tag, but decided to speak before seeming like a total idiot. “I really owed you one, anyways. I make you get me so many refills of coffee, I’m surprised you haven’t kicked me out yet.” He wasn’t sure if she would recognize him, but surely she’d at least understand the sentiment. 

Nicole finished lacing her shoe and stood up, with a smile on her lips. He was what as a waitress they called a camper, he sits at the dinner she worked at for hours working and she would just keep refilling his coffee. He was alway deep in thought and writing away. She had been so frazzled by her car situation that it hadn’t fully clicked in who he was till now. “Well after this I will refill your coffee for as long as you’d like.” She told him, “But on one condition, I got know, what are you always working on?” She asked, it something as she always wondered.

With Nicole’s words, Avery shook her head with a soft smile. “I honestly don’t mind, I was only heading home anyway.” She reassured the blonde. “I mean, if you didn’t mind, you could give me a lift home when you came back?” Even if Nicole said no, the brunette wouldn’t have minded. She was happy to help. “I can catch up on some reading whilst I wait.” As she spoke, she pulled one of her textbooks from her bag.

“Of course I can give you a ride home! I would do it even if you weren’t helping me out.” Nicole was so grateful Avery had come along, she nodded with a smile taking a quick look around. There was a cab parked just up the street, if she took a cab she could be home in 10 minutes or less. “Okay hold on one second,” She said before walking down to the cab to see if they could take her, he said he was done for the day but agreed to take her anyways. “Okay I’ll be back as soon as I can, thank you so much for this Avery!” She turned back towards Avery before she left.

Anna shifted the four year old who was about the size of her on her hip as she looked at the woman. Bounding Andon up as he started to slide off her hip. Getting into locked cars wasn’t her forte. Anything dealing with cars wasn’t, it was clear when she’d ran her first car out of oil. “Um, do you want some help? I mean, I’m not much help but I know a guy.”

Nicole smiled at the young girl, who stopped even though she was carrying a child around the same age as her own. She would like to think if the rolls were reversed she would stop too, but sometimes you get so caught up in dealing with your kid you miss whats going on around you. “Oh I don’t want to hold you up, but if you have time though.. I could use a little help, yeah.” She gave the girl an apologetic look.

“I wouldn’t call it impressive.” He smiled blushing a bit. Nate has never been one to take a compliment. He just really wasn’t used to it. “Right, getting to it right now.” He then got to work putting the tool his dad always called a slim jim in between the rubber plastic and glass of the car window concentrating on watching it come out on the other side. He then tried to hook the door lock so he could pull up and unlock it. “Oh, I’m Nate by the way. Probably should have said that sooner.” His mama would not be impressed by his lack of manners.

“Well I would, you literally run into flaming buildings for a living! That would scare living shit out of me I think.” She laughed, she couldn’t imagine doing his job. She in no way was brave enough to run toward a fire. She watched as attempted to unlock her door, it was a cool tool to have she was definitely going to have to look into getting one herself. “I’m sorry thats on me, I through you straight into fixing my problem mode. I’m Nicole, it’s really nice to meet you and not just cause you are breaking into my car for me.”

The nickname brought a chuckle to his lips, but he knew how strange of a request it may have seemed. It had been a while since had to break into a car like this, but it was a talent he shamefully possessed. Taking the shoelace from her, he tied into a slip knot. “This may take a few tries, it’s been a while,” he mumbled. Placing the middle of the lace at the top corner of the door, he wiggled it down until half the lace slid into the inside of the car. He pushed more of the string behind the crack of the door until the slip knot was inside the car hovering over the lock button. Tightening the string, he managed to get the slip knot over the lock button. He pulled on the shoelace to tighten the knot, pulled up, and the lock button came popping up. He breathed out and smiled to himself, happy to see he still had the secret touch. Opening the car door, he stepped back and gave the woman a smile and nod. “And there you go. See? All I needed was a shoelace.” Taking the string, his fingers began to pick at the knot he created so he could unravel it for her. 

Nicole watched as he fiddled with the shoe string, trying to figure out what the heck he was going to do with it that was going to unlock her car door. "Take all the time you need, I'm sure this is a lot faster than waiting all day for a mechanic to come bust me in!" She told him. He pushed the shoe lace through and she stood there in a bit of awe, she never in a million years would have thought of this as a way to break into a car. “Holy crap. I really cant believe that worked!” She laughed as he popped her door open. “Thank you so much, that was pretty impressive I have to admit.” Taking her shoe lace back before squatting down to lace up her shoe. “I feel like I should buy you a cup of coffee or something as a thanks.” She looked up at him.

“I am totally and completely innocent,” He knew that was a complete lie, it was just always fun to mess with her. Who could resist giving that kid ice cream? Definitely not him. “I don’t mind running around with him. Maybe he’ll get all my energy out too,” Honestly, he didn’t have as much energy as he once did, but that was just because he was getting older. “Who’s gonna wear who out?” He then looked in the direction of the bathroom, “I think that’ll honestly relax him,” It was a good idea. Bath’s at least relaxed him. “How ‘bout I stay until after the books over.” He liked to listen to stories too. “I know, you’re probably the most flexible baby momma. Not gonna lie.” 

“Okay well next time he’s going to go to your place in just going to get him hopped up on all kinds of sugar and see what you think then.” She pointed a finger at him but laughed. She really didn’t mind, for being a 5 year old he was still a pretty calm and easy to take of for the most part. It was like he had the best of both of them. “Oh I definitely think he could out do you. You’ll be passed out and he’ll be running laps around you.” She teased. There had been many nights when Jace was still a baby, where she was fighting to stay awake and Jace was wide awake. “How about you keep him busy for a bit and I can get the bath started?” She offered. “Well its easy to be flexible the father of your kid doesn’t just stick around.. but is actually really good Dad to your kid.” She gave him warm smile before turning to go fill the tub.

With the woman’s request of dropping the formalities, Avery nodded even though she probably wasn’t going to, her brothers had brought her up to make sure she respected her elders. Especially though that she worked for. “That’s still a good start and much better option to breaking the window.” She offered with a soft smile. “I can wait here if you want to go and try get them? To make sure it doesn’t get towed or anything.”

Nicole nodded, it was a good plan. One she probably would have gotten to eventually but in the stress of the moment she had been coming up blank. "Oh no I would feel horrible make you sit here and wait! I'm sure you have better things to do." She smiled, "I'm sure you have way better things to do then baby sit my car." Nicole could never get over how sweet Avery always was, when she was her age she definitely wasn't as sweet and kind as she was.

“Are you asking me to pick a lock?” Lucy asked. Then, without waiting for an answer, Lucy took a wire hanger from her shopping bag, and a bobby pin from her pocket. It took her a second to realize what would be more useful in this situation.

The hanger. It was a piece of crap from the thrift shop, plus Lucy thought she’d need her bobby pin later. She didn’t know why.

“Okay, just wait a second.” She bent and unbent the hanger so that only one curled tip remained, and then slid the curled end between the rim and glass part of the car window. It was… tricky. Tricky enough for Lucy to let out a few troubled grunts. 

The hanger hooked onto something, and with one yank up, Lucy was able to get the car to click open.

“Welp,” she said, unhooking the wire hanger. “That should do it.”

A brunette had approached and immediately jumped into action. Before Nicole could even say anything she seemed to be pulling out things from her bag in attempt. She almost laughed a bit at how quickly she was ready to break into her car. "I wasn't asking but of course if you think you can do it I would love the help!"

Nicole watched as she tried to unlock the door, leaning against the side of the car"So have you done this a lot or?" She asked, half joking.

When she heard the door unlock she jumped upright, "you did it! Thank you!" She examined, "I can't believe that actually worked, it seems like something you'd see in a movie that never works in real life." She laughed

“Probably safer too.” He had broken many windows in the past and shard of glass were the worst, they got everywhere. “I guess you could say that. I’m a very firefighter, though we don’t usually use these kind of tools to get the job done.” He explained reaching into the back seat of his truck that was parked beside hers. He usually kept the unlocking tools under the seat where he put Ella’s car seat. “Found ‘em!” Nate said waving the case in the air victoriously. “Shouldn’t take too long.”

"You might be right there. Breaking the glass was probably not the smartest idea." She would have been paranoid and had to vacuum it out multiple times before she would be safe enough to put her son in. "You're a firefighter by day and you rescue girls locked out of their cars when you’re not at work. That's pretty impressive." She laughed. She leaned against the backseat as he looked through his truck, noticing that he also had the base for a car seat in his car as well. "That's okay, if you get me into my car you can take as long as you need!"

Heading home from her shift at the diner, Avery’s brows furred together as she saw someone who seemed to be in a spot of bother. The brunette slowly walked over, wondering if there was anything she could do to help. As she finally approached the blonde, a small smile set on her lips as she realised who it was. However that smile faded as a look over concern washed over her features. “Oh, Ms. Evans, that’s awful.” Avery thought for a moment, her lips pressing together as she tried to figure how a way to help Nicole out. “Do you have a spare set at home? Because that’s the only thing I can think of, unless we call the fire brigade and get them to like break the glass or something?”

Nicole looked up as a familiar face approached, "Avery, hi sweetheart. I've told you before you can call me Nicole." A smile spreading across her face. Avery was one of a few people she actually trusted to baby sit Jace. "Yes actually, I'm pretty sure they are in the kitchen junk drawer!" She perked up a bit as the idea set in. "I think anyways." She laughed shaking her head at her own stupidity for locking herself and also not knowing where her spare set was.
