Why I Created “Latinos on the Yard”
Saludos a todos, mi gente!
I’m sure if you are here right now, you are wondering why this kind of blog exists or is needed. You may even be wondering, “Latino Greeks exist?” Yes! We do! Showcasing that and answering questions about ourselves is the primary reason why I created this blog! Let me offer a personal example…
See this? This is me just the day after I crossed. Getting to that point was incredibly difficult for me because I had no idea what Latino Greeks were about. There were little peanuts of information about Latino Greeks for me to consume, quite a bit of information about the Divine Nine for me to help piece together the puzzle (thank you @divineninelover!), and just gushing waterfalls of information about NPC sororities. I was pretty lost. I had no idea what I should expect, but I figured since Latino Greeks traditions followed more in tandem with Black Greeks, I should expect that more than the NPC/IFC traditions. But yet, none of the information I ground up could have prepared me fully for the nuances of Latino Greek Life.
The Divine Nine has Divine Nine Lover, Watch The Yard, The Root and well-known publications like Essence to showcase what they’re about.
NPC/IFC has Total Sorority Move, Total Frat Move, Sorority Sugar, and even Buzzfeed to show themselves off!
After I crossed, I began learning and working as an executive board member with my Hermanas, trying to recruit any women interested in the Hermandad. But each semester, finding much less numbers than more well-known organizations and the girls that did come had no idea what sororities were, let alone what a Latina sorority was. And as much as we could say “Do your research,” I could see their eyes lost as if to say “Research what? There is nothing.” And to all those interests, you got me there.
My boyfriend crossed the semester after I did into Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. and we wanted to be the best Greeks we could be, but coming up frustrated with competing against more well-known organizations just to keep our chapters alive.
Once we graduated and saw both our chapters left with only 3 undergraduates just ready to graduate, something had to change.
So here we are! Here’s hoping this blog will be of use to someone because Latino Greek Life has been so rewarding to me.

Love at frost sight. ❄️
Right now we are taking middle schoolers...opening up to high schoolers very soon! If you would like to sign someone up please DM me or call the number (at Shaker Square Cinemas)
Like seriously...walking around with the kiss of death. I like watching The Walking Dead...I don't want to be one 😂😷😷😷 (at Frank J. Lausche State Office Building)
I'm interested in pursuing membership via graduate chapter. For those who went the grad route, did you just go to events alone and get to know members that way? Or did you know someone prior or bring a friend along. I'm a little shy/quiet and it takes me a minute to get to know people when I'm by myself. Also is fresh out of college (21) too young to pursue grad?
It depended on the event. Some events I had someone with me, others I went by myself. During the beginning events was when it was the time to introduce myself to members and for them to remember my face, better yet my name and that I was a consistent familiar face at their events. I am incredibly shy unless I know someone so I understand that, but don’t let that be a block to what you are trying to do.

Since I am the first person in my family to ever go to college, I was on my own in going to events and programs. I can say that I do have social anxiety, however what really brought me over was me going to an event by myself and I was immediately greeted by my now sorors...right at the door. That was what made me choose my organization right away. If you are truly interested I joining at grad level or your specific organization, I say take the leap of faith and go to those events. There is nothing standing in the way but you.
Good luck
I've crossed and everything was fine, but now the other Greeks on campus are forcing us to have a "sit". I've finished my process and I dont want to go through another just to prove to other Greeks what I'm about. How do I get out of this?
Other Greeks…. you mean from other organizations.
What authority do they have to make you sit any where… Y'all grown grown….. you should know what people can and cannot make you do
-UniBomber
I'm curious myself...why do you have to prove yourself to other Greeks? It doesn't make sense 🤷🏾♀️
Finer 😍😇😍
@divineninelover
Oh so dovely!!!💙💙💙
Unibomber, can you tell me why not showing up to another org's probate could be detrimental?
By not attending you are not supporting NPHC as a whole, to which your organization of interest is a part. Especially in schools where the NPHC or black community is low in numbers, public events like these are the best ways to meet others and interact with members of your org of interest. You may be asked about another orgs probate (especially if the your org of interest is not on the yard yet) as a way to determine if you are involved in Black community at all.
This is not to say go and standout, but go, observe, support your friends, solidify your decision about your org of interest and add to your social resume on campus.
-UniBomber
Why not go? It's fun to see and it shows your support. Even before I understood what probates where about...long before I was Greek I enjoyed watching my fellow peers give love to their organization
Paper vs made... kudos to anyone who makes it into their org of choice and thumbs up to the people who are "paper" and didn't have to put themselves, their orgs, schools, and chapters at risk by participating in processes not in line with what the org stands for. I commend those who survived being "made" but I think it is unfortunate that some ppl think membership holds less value bc of what someone did/didn't endure. Focus less on being "made" and more on how you will make your org better.
