The delicate beauty of ancient Roman frescoes.
This fresco is a classic example of Roman wall painting from the 1st century AD, belonging to the "Fourth Pompeian Style" (c. 50–79 AD), characterized by fantastical architectural elements such as columns and elaborate ornamentation set against vividly colored backgrounds, in this case a deep Pompeian red.

Brown was a really cool 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine artist. This one isn’t sci-fi, but it still might be my favorite work of his! Which is an odd thing to find myself saying, given that — as longtime readers may have noticed over the 13 years I’ve run this blog — I really like sci-fi art.
