I really don’t like how being vegan is seen as such a difficult thing to do, like it’s some massive hardship for a person to take on that requires so much sacrifice.
While it definitely must’ve been a real challenge 20 years ago, now we’re pretty much spoiled with choice when it comes to finding animal free substitutes to all kinds of food and products.
I think the whole ‘being vegan is difficult’ narrative is outdated and we need to change it if we want more people to switch to a plant based lifestyle.
I went vegetarian in 2003 and vegan in ~2010. And while I did grow up in a nice area (west coast non-rural area of the US), it was a lot more difficult then than now.
A lot less choice, and that was only 23 to 16 years ago, given the timeline above.
There are so many more options now, and even for more rural areas (of the US, again) I’ve met a lot of people succeeding at a plant based diet and being vegan all around.
Especially in the western world, “being veg is too challenging” is getting to be way less true than tumblr anti-vegans will have you believe. Even in a lot of areas you wouldn’t think (like poorer areas), I’ve met many vegans and vegetarians doing just fine.
