Does your OC live in self-denial about anything?

He doesn’t consider himself a very good person. 

This immediately strikes me as something that is kind of stupid to have him be in denial about. Oh, woe is him, he is in denial about what a wonderful human being he is, but one must remember that he grew up in a very hateful environment and spent his formative years being gaslighted into thinking he was the scum of the earth. Your own mother spewing that kind of bile in your general direction is enough to really leave you wondering if there’s some merit behind those words.

Some of his actions later in life, but still young enough for them to be filed away as Youthful Mistakes, only solidified his belief that he isn’t as good of a person as he tries to be. 

He doesn’t actually have to try all that hard to do the good he wants to see in the world, so it doesn’t really feel like he’s trying at all, if that makes sense.

He finds himself the sort of person to ruin lives. 

What does your OC think about the concept of love?

Something very complicated, I would imagine. Rufus has never really known much love in his lifetime. His father loved him, his sister loves him, and Charlie loves him, but for some people the bad outweighs the good, and his own mother never being able to find it in her heart to love him really threw him a curveball in that regard.

He thinks he loves a lot of people, but he can never be sure if it’s real or if that’s something else, so he doesn’t really think that hard about it. He just treats them the way he thinks he should.

Does your OC have an unrealistic view of some area of their life or worldview?

YOU BET! Charlie is absolutely and unshakably convinced that she doesn’t need help from anyone with anything and she never will so stop offering. Of course we as the author and readers know that she is completely wrong, because whether she likes it or not, she is disabled. She can hardly see and she walks with a cane. Little bumps to her left leg can, will, and have taken her down.

She is very belligerently attached to her independence, though, because there was a time in her life where she was convinced she needed someone for everything, and she will never again allow that kind of vulnerability to affect her. She has a lot to prove. To whom, we’re not really sure, but she sure is determined to prove it.

What type of people does your OC idolize the most?

No one. Charlie is so self-reliant that she won’t even let herself model her behavior after someone else. Everyone has to earn her respect and admiration no matter who they are.

What makes your OC feel the most guilt in their life?

Her failed marriage. The whole thing was her fault from start to finish and it left her absolutely broken because she hurt the one person she really and truly wanted to spend the rest of her life with. She also hurt their son, who can hardly even stand to be in the same room as her now. 

The one thing in the world that really tears Charlie up is knowing that she hurt someone she cares about, especially someone she cares about as much as she did (does) Jim. She still has nightmares about making him cry. 

But of course, it’s Charlie, so this is an extremely-well kept secret. She doesn’t even mention it if she can get away with it.
