Rewatching Zim is really fun as an expert on the show now. Every single episode I can spit off random facts about deleted scenes, a story a voice actor told about a line, animation quirks, hidden Easter eggs, anything and everything. Very cool

In episode 1 it was Red that was supposed to say “It’s not stupid, it’s advanced!” But the animators colored it wrong so they just switched Purple to say it and Red’s VA got jealous about it over time bc ppl loved that line and he didn’t get to use his take

In the episode where they were selling bars of sawdust candy there was a deleted shot from the scene of Zim scaring the humans where a bunch of buildings got blown up. It was deleted bc 9/11

There’s a scene from the episode where Zim got abducted by other aliens with a big fully animated action sequence where he got knocked out and the PAK crawled his body to after they got cut bc the episode was already long and boring

Richard Zim‘s VA has many stories about having to keep water with him while voice acting to do all the screaming (my favorite one is after Zim says “I think I’ve broken my spine!” In the parent teacher episode)

The reason the show was canceled was vague and sudden but the ultimate reason was advertisers not liking that Zim was mostly watched by a slightly older audience and they were very critical of anything that wasn’t literally as successful as SpongeBob

my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old

As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, one thing that’s been helping me grapple with the intense shame I have over all my “wasted potential” is accepting that potential doesn’t exist and never did.

This sounds so harsh, but please bare with me.

I procrastinated a lot growing up. I still procrastinate today, but less so. And yet, I got good grades. I could write an A+ paper that “knocked [my professor]’s socks off” in the hour before class and print it with sweat running down my face.

I was so used to hearing from teachers and family that if I just didn’t procrastinate and worked all the time, I could do anything! I had all this potential I wasn’t living up to!

And that’s true, as far as it goes, but that’s like saying if Usain Bolt just kept going he could be the fastest marathon runner in the world. Why does he stop at the end of the race??

If ANYONE could make their top speed/most productive setting the one they used all the time, anyone could do anything. But you can’t. Your top speed is not a speed you’re able to sustain.

Now, I’ve found that I do need to work on not procrastinating. Not because the product is better, even, but because it’s better for my mental health and physical health to not have a full, sweating, panicked breakdown over every task even if the task itself turns out excellently. It’s a shitty way to live! You feel bad ALL the time! And I don’t deserve to live like that anymore.

So all of this to say, I’m not wasting a ton of potential. I don’t have an ocean of productivity and accomplishments inside of me that I could easily, effortlessly access if I just sat down 8 hours a day and worked. There’s no fucking way. That’s not real. It’s an illusion. It’s fine not to live up to an illusion.

And if you have ADHD, I mean this from the bottom of my heart: you do not have limitless potential confounded by your laziness. You have the good potential of a good person, and you can access it with practice and work, but do not accept the story that you are choosing not to be all that you are or can be. You are just a human person.
