LGBTQIA+ Term of The Day!

Since pride month is coming up I thought of sharing terms each day. Firstly we have...

Lesbian!

Definition: A girl or woman who is romantically, sexually or emotionally attracted to other women

Term orgin: The term is a deprived verison of Lesbo, a island that an Ancient Greek poet, Sappho lived in. Some of her remaining poems are about her loving women.

History of The Lesbian Flag: The first lesbian flag that was created was the Labrys flag created in 1999. The purple is associated with lesbians and sapphics since Sappho's wrote about women who wore crowns out of violet. The black triangle as a call back to a Nazi identification system used to determine if someone in concentration camp is "asocial" or someone who went against the Nazi's rule. The labrys is a weapon used in various ancient societies and is mostly associated to the Amazons, a girl tribe that's full of female warriors in Greek Mythology. This was adopted by the TERFs(Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists) in the Lesbian Radical Feminist Movement. Some lesbians didn't like this flag for a few reasons. Some being that the flag was designed by a man and that it had holocaust imagery.

Next in around 2010, a new flag was introduced called the Lipstick Lesbian flag or Pink Lesbian flag created by a blogger, Natalie McCray. Many people disliked the flag because of its exclusion to butch lesbians or any lesbian that isn't fem. The creator of the pride flag was also transphobic, biphobic and racist.

Now finally with have the recent flag that was created by Emily Gwen in 2018 on Tumblr. With each color representing a meaning.

Dark Orange: Gender Non-Conformity

Orange: Independence

Light Orange: Community

White:Unique relationships to Womanhood

Light Pink: Serenity and Peace

Pink: Love and Sex

Dark Pink: Femininity
