“If I could go back to that final night of June 1999...”
Year 1999 is a Key Timeframe in the 18TRIP story. It is Tao’s original timeline, the year before the Original Kinari Azekawa passed and set in the mid-Heisei era of Japan, a recurring timeframe in 18TRIP’s themes,. In 2055, it is often brought up in the term, “Heisei Boom”. This timeframe mostly consists of sub-characters that are important to 2055's Ward Mayors.
Persons of Interest:
Kinouchi Tao
Kinouchi Taiki
Gozu Souta
Azekawa Kinari (Original)
Azekawa Kinari (Android)
Natsuyaki Chihiro
The cult, and the events leading up to that fateful night
Tao and his family have been part of 宇宙の光 for as long as he could remember. Even as a child, the cult’s influence on their family is strong, even providing leisure activity tickets presumably “for free”. The payment of course, is in donations, just as the Kinouchi parents had continuously donated as much money as they could for the “ark”.
As for its leader, Tao himself has met him when he was younger, describing his eyes as strange and empty, devoid of warmth.
His parents were executives, rather high ranking individuals in the cult. As July 1999 drew closer, infighting begins within the members. The leader did not know how to distribute the “ark”, due to the conflict, so whoever bid the highest would earn it. However, the couple was not able to win the “ark”, and resulted to stealing the coffin.
The couple were oblivious to the fact that the coffin was a time-machine, and forcibly shut Tao inside it, causing him to warp to the year 2052 with nothing to his name.
This M.O. is believed to be done by the same serial killer mentioned in the Alien Serial Killings incident, found in Akuta and Netaro’s S1.0 novels.
A much more detailed report on this case will be released in the near future.
Log: Kinouchi Tao’s Funeral
The Developer details the Original Kinari’s grief over the event, as well as several details regarding the case. Such as how the media treated the case as if it were fiction, creating theories about Tao’s death. The most prominent one being that his body was cut into pieces and thrown into the mountains.
The android Kinari gains access to this file and reads it in his S1.5 novel, Delete Me Softly.
Connections - Azekawa Kinari
The Azekawa Kinari of 2055 is an android replica of the Original Kinari who didn’t live past 1999, created by the Original’s Father. Upon meeting in prison, Tao mistakes him for the Original, who he has been modeled after.
He had always been skeptical about Tao’s claim that he and his Original were once classmates, given that their ages do not match up. However, he knows that Tao has no reason to lie about this, and was further cemented yet creates intrigue due to what he learns from his Father’s diary entries.
Present day, Kinari views his Original in a more positive light than before. Rather than striving to be like him, he wants to learn and understand him as a person who once lived.
Connections - Natsuyaki Chihiro
The connections between Natsuyaki Chihiro and this timeframe is much more on the looser end of things. Granted, he has always been a fan of the Heisei era, and this year just so happens to be in the middle of it.
While he appears completely unrelated on the surface, Chihiro and Tao both use the exact same word to describe Gozu Souta’s name, “unusual”. Not only that, but he has also accompanied Tao in the library during his search for what he has missed during his time travel, so he feels as though the last name listed for his father on the family registry feels familiar.
To put it bluntly, he’s blood-related to Gozu.
The nature of this blood relation—father, grandfather or simply a relative, is completely unknown as of now.
Speculation & Hypothesis
Basing on the Japanese Fiscal Year, and on the assumption that Memory Defrag - Record B and Back to the ‘99 - 6/29/99 (2) take place on the same day, the Original Kinari is 18 by 6/29. Therefore, his birthday cannot be any later than that date. It’s also worth mentioning that Tao was 17 during these events as his birthday was in January of the following year.
Funerals in Japan are typically held one or two days after the deceased’s passing. As the Original Kinari was noted to be wearing his school uniform then, it can be inferred it was on a weekday. I left it unknown just in case, but it cannot be any later than two weeks.
Cross-posting the first edition of the lore explanations I've been meaning to work on! Please let me know if there are any mistakes, thank you 🙇
“Kitakata Raito will die at 28 years old.”
The Kitakata Death Prophecy is a Key Plot Point in the 18TRIP story. This event was major contributor to how both Raito and Nayuki’s lives turn out as they grow up and become adults, as well as a second turning point in Ryui and Toi’s relationship with Astaroth’s powers.
It is first referenced in Season 1 Main Story - Chained Up Scarlet (SideA - 009) and mentioned on the Shiramitsus’ side on Designs of Happiness (SideB - 12).
Persons of Interest:
Kitakata Raito
Kitakata Nayuki
Astaroth
Shiramitsu Toi
Shiramitsu Ryui
Origins explained
For generations, the Shiramitsu clan has been operating the prestigious fortune telling establishment, “Angel Eye”. Many of Angel Eye’s customers are composed of elite members of society, including the Kitakata household. The head of the family possesses a power to foresee the future with 100% accuracy, which makes their shop incredibly sought after.
Their family wholeheartedly believes in the god Oshisha-sama and it is thanks to them that their head gains the power. However, the Shiramitsu clan’s methods in order to gain such power is rather sinister in nature.
Every so often, the clan would enact a summoning ritual in order to bring forth Oshisha-sama. One that requires for the next family head to have a near-death experience. In actuality, the entity that provides that foresight is not an angel, but the demon, Astaroth.
Sometime after the previous head passes, his identical twin sons, Ryui and Toi swap places. Ryui was selected to undergo the ritual, but with Toi taking his place, Astaroth has slipped into his body instead.
The day of the prophecy
On a day after Raito has turned 12 years old, he and Nayuki headed to Angel Eye to receive the prophecy. It is to be noted that this is soon after the title of family has been passed down from the twins’ father to Toi.
There, Astaroth uses Toi’s body to tell the pair of brothers about the foreseeable future.
“Kitakata Raito will die at 28 years old.”
There was just one glaring contradiction——what the pair of brothers saw in the vision Astaroth had showed them is different.
Raito saw that he died smiling, and what Nayuki saw was that Raito died in agony. These are clashing statements, so which of these was the ‘truth’ is currently up in the air.
Present day
One night, Astaroth approaches Raito and offers to let him see his corpse one more time. Raito simply declines, then continues to ponder over the prophecy.
But when he thinks back on his death expression... he can no longer seem to remember what it looked like...

——Students chattering about
Kinari: ……
Nanaki: It’s almost time, Azekawa-san. When Muneuji calls you, please proceed to the center.
Akuta: Suuuuure are more school broadcasting cameras than usual.
Ushio: The students probably requested it. There were a lot of curious onlookers flocking together whenever they’d change classrooms.
Akuta: So basically… there’s a lotta cameras around ‘cuz they wanna give out that sweet fansa to those who couldn’t get in the gym and hype ‘em up?!
Kinari: I see. I’ll try to be as attentive as possible.
Kiroku: Don’t.. overdo it… But, break a leg, Azekawa-san… I’m sure.. you’ll do great…
Kinari: …Thank you, Kinugawa-sama.
Kinari: (I’ve already written the letter prior. All that’s left now is to read it on stage.)
Kinari: (There are no issues with the operation of my joints, yet my body’s movements are stiffer than usual.)
Kinari: (This feeling must be “tension”.)
Muneuji: “...Now then, to conclude today’s Asu High Student For a Day Experience Event, we would like to have HAMA’s 11th Ward Mayor—Azekawa Kinari-san, read a letter addressed to all of our students.”
Muneuji: “Azekawa-san, please come up on stage.”
Kinari: …Yes.
Muneuji: ……
Kinari: (Kaguya-sama and everyone from Day2 is watching over me.)
Kinari: (Today’s performance may not involve singing… But for my letter to reach those listening, I must use my voice.)
Kinari: (With all the grains of sand I’ve accumulated in my heart up until this moment… I wish to read this with everything that I’ve got.)
Kinari: “My name is Azekawa Kinari, and I have undergone what a day is like in your school. Firstly, I’d like to express my gratitude from the bottom of my heart for this valuable experience.”
Kinari: “Truthfully, the energy from everyone’s morning greetings overwhelmed me. I could not at all predict what sort of events might transpire today.”
Kinari: “The more time I spent with everyone here, I’ve come to realize that each person and their interactions with others are the foundation of every moment and atmosphere in this school.”
Kinari: “The students call out to one other sometimes with a smile on their lips, sometimes with furrowed brows. In each and every place, there exists something that cannot be measured.”
Kinari: “Enveloped by all these students’ overflowing energy, similar to that of a vortex, my own body temperature seems to have risen by a few degrees, too… Such is the sensation I felt.”
Kinari: “I’ve yet to grasp the words to describe this feeling. But… what I am sure of is that this is the origin of “learning” there is to have at school.”
Kinari: “What I have experienced today has become my treasure. I’ll be sure to carefully preserve the memories deep in my heart.”
Kinari: “And for when I have grown and am able to append my own interpretations to this log…”
Kinari: “I think I’ll write another letter… addressed to you.”

Muneuji: Having been classmates twice in both mahorova Gymnasium and Asu High, it’s as if I’ve learned more and more about you, Azekawa-san.
Muneuji: Even now, I’ve yet again learned something new. I couldn’t be happier.
Kinari: I’ve also learned many new things from this school experience. Not just about school itself, but about you, too.
Muneuji: About me?
Kinari: I have observed that you do not like losing, Kaguya-sama. Both in surprise tests and paper sumo.
Muneuji: Fu…haha! Do forgive me, for I let my childishness get the better of me during our time at the gymnasium.
Kinari: Please don’t worry. It was a pleasant use of my time.
Muneuji: This… might sound silly, but would you mind listening to this matter as we talk?
Kinari: …Yes?
Muneuji: The other day, I had a dream that you transformed into a rocket and launched into space, taking me with you.
Kinari: I transformed into…
Kinari: I’m sorry, may I request you to repeat that?
Muneuji: I had a dream that you transformed into a rocket and launched into space, taking me with you.
Kinari: I transformed into... a rocket.
Muneuji: Yes, you did. Since having that dream, my thoughts began to wander each time I saw you—curious if you had any other transformed appearances.
Muneuji: You don't need to share if it's classified information, but… Azekawa-san, is it truly possible for you to turn yourself into a rocket?
Kinari: ……
Kinari: It’s likely possible.
Kinari: It may be difficult with my current body, but should my core part be mounted up on a rocket, only then would it be possible.
Muneuji: Really, now…!
Muneuji: For when the day Azekawa-san transforms into a rocket arrives, please, allow me to be your pilot.
Kinari: But, if you were to be the pilot, Kaguya-sama, I would require myself to have a robotic arm.
Muneuji: Why is that?
Kinari: If conflict regarding spatial navigation arises, it must be resolved with paper sumo as the method.
Muneuji: Yes, that is true. This means that we may need a sizable budget.
Kinari: I shall then simulate the resource and development costs for this rocket transformation. Raito will surely be more than happy to invest in this project.
Muneuji: Alright, then shall we discuss the details? First of all, the engine must be a cutting-edge technology detonation-type engine——
Kinari: (I pray that a peaceful time like this could go on forever…)
Kinari: (This… is the idea that was generated² within me.)
Kinari: (Wouldn’t you say that it's fair to say that I understood now? …After all, surely you³ felt this way too, did you not?)

Translator’s Notes:
[1] - Also known as chabashira (茶柱), a belief/superstition that when you pour tea and a leaf is standing upright, it means that good luck is coming.
[2] - Noting this for extra nuance in this line. The Original Kinari’s kanji 生成 was used here in its commonly known verb form, “to generate/create”, rather than as a name.
[3] - 18TRIP playing with their furigana again. While Kinari says “you”/貴方, the furigana (きなり) above it makes it clear that he was addressing the Original Kinari. Again, noted for nuance.

[1] - Muneuji’s Fanclub name. An attempt at a localization for 抜け駆け斬首, where 抜け駆け which basically means beating someone to the punch, though not always in romantic context. Also a samurai terminology of sneaking into an enemy base. Whereas 斬首 means “to behead”. So with that in mind, “Ahead Equals Behead” is the result! It literally means that for these members, Muneuji is absolutely off limits in terms of pursuing romantically and they can only admire him from afar.

Kinari: Avoiding issues is the most rational choice. I must apologize to Kaguya-sama, who granted me opportunities I am undeserving of.
Renga: But that’s…!
——Ushio happens to pass by
Ushio: …Mm?
Ushio: (That’s Azekawa-san and Nishizono-san? Sure is unusual to see them standing around talking.)
Ushio: (...Wait, the thing Azekawa-san’s holding——)
Renga: Oh, Ushio… Sorry, I’m blocking the way.
Kinari: Please excuse us.
Ushio: No but… That uniform’s what you’re wearing when you visit our school, right? The one Muneuji prepared.
Ushio: Is there something wrong with it? Like, was there a mistake in the sizing?
Kinari: I deeply apologize, Kurama-sama. I am here to return this uniform..
Ushio: Huh?
Renga: Kinari says he’s going to decline the visitation program.
Ushio: Eh, why so suddenly…? May I hear the reason why?
Kinari: …My current sensitivity has reached its limits. I am not confident that I’ll be able to carry out the orders expected of me.
Kinari: I… do not want to betray everyone’s expectations. Not everyone in Asu High, and not Kaguya-sama, most of all.
Ushio: The order you’re referring to… is that letter thing?
Kinari: Yes.
Ushio: That stuff is… No, I’m not trying to be judgmental. But isn’t it fine to be a bit laid-back with this?
Ushio: Plus, our Principal imposed that condition on his own accord, or so I heard from Muneuji.
Kinari: Still…
Ushio: Also, on that letter you wrote in mahorova Gymnasium. Muneuji was grinning from ear to ear while reading it.
Kinari: He was laughing? …It’s feasible that there truly is something wrong with what I wrote.
Ushio: I don’t think that was the case. Um, I worded it really poorly but…
Ushio: What I meant was, in my perspective, Muneuji was really moved by your letter, Azekawa-san.
Kinari: But… that letter is composed of text that simply listed facts.
Ushio: …I haven’t read it myself, so I don’t really know, but Muneuji seems like he learned something from it.
Kinari: Although I lacked sensitivity, does it mean Kaguya-sama used his own for my sake…?
Ushio: That line of assumption bothers me somewhat. So if you say that your sensitivity is at its limit…
Ushio: Then, what about the worries and the thought of disappointing others you vented to us just now?
Kinari: ……!
Renga: Hey, so you’re thinking it over, right?
Renga: Since it’s a rare chance, I don’t want you to give up on it, Kinari. I know this was probably selfish of me to say, though.
Renga: For me, school wasn’t all fun and games. But now that I look back on it, it was a really important experience.
Kinari: Nishizono-sama…
Ushio: If you would like to call it quits, then please return the uniform in our room.
Ushio: And, tell Muneuji what we talked about just now. If you really don’t want to do it anymore, I’m sure he’d be accepting of your decision.
Kinari: ...Understood.

Chihiro: Somethin’ cutieful, hm? OFC I’ve got it in stock~! Um, I think I put it over here…
Tao: A letter writing set? Is there someone you’re writing this for?
Kinari: Yes. It’s for… a very important school friend.

Takato: Looks like everyone has returned by now.
Muneuji: Yes, everyone is present.
Takato: Alright, then let’s begin our final lesson!
Kinari: (For the final class of my gymnasium experience… I wonder what’s in store?)
Takato: Based on today’s interactions with your classmates, I’d like for you all to write a letter.
Kiroku: A.. letter…?
Takato: Since this is a beta-test, the letters will also serve as feedback or review for what has transpired today. I will be reading these later, so please keep that in mind while writing.
Ryui: Oh for fuck’s sake.
Renga: But who should we write to?
Takato: Shall I split you into groups of two and three? If it were up to me, the groups would be like…
Takato: Nishizono-san, Kinugawa-san and Shiramitsu-san will form the three-person group. From Shiramitsu-san to Nishizono-san, then from Nishizono-san to Kinugawa-san… Please write to each other in that cycle.
Kiroku: A letter.. for Ryui-kun…
Ryui: The hell should I write to Nishizono…?
Renga: Th-There has to be something! Like, your thoughts on the tea I made, or how great I did as your senior!
Takato: Since everyone here is already familiar with one another, don’t feel pressured to only write about today’s experience!
Ryui: Eh, but still.
Renga: You can’t just say “but still”!
Kiroku: …*laughs* …
Kinari: (This means that I will be addressing this letter to…)
Takato: Azekawa-san and Kaguya-san will form a pair. Please write the letters addressed to each other.
Kinari: Understood.
Muneuji: A letter for Azekawa-san, hm? There’s plenty I’d like to write about.
Kinari: (Writing letters… is an act I am not at all used to.)
Kinari: (However, there are plans that I’ll be reading a letter for the entire student body, during the finale of “Asu High’s Student For a Day Experience” event.)
Kinari: (For now, I’ll first face Kaguya-sama head on… I have to stay focused and write with all I can.)
Renga: Writing a letter sure feels a bit embarrassing. I usually just use PeChat for these.
Takato: Isn’t it very retro? And to finish this experience off, these letters aren’t just text data, they’ll be sent to you in the real world as actual letters on a later date.
Takato: Think of it as writing an actual letter… Please think carefully about each word you’d like to say to the person you’re addressing it to.
Ryui: Ya sure are committed to the analogue bit, huh…
Takato: Stationary is supplied within your desks, so use those tools as you’d like.
Takato: I also made a school stamp, so I’ll properly seal it with wax once they’ll be sent for delivery♪ Maaaan, I’m really looking forward to it!
Muneuji: Takato-senpai is demonstrating his hobby’s full extent. I am also anticipating its arrival.
Kiroku: I can’t wait.. to see.. the sealing wax…

——Pens scratch the letter paper as the students write
Muneuji: …………
Kinari: …………
Kinari: (Everyone else is writing without hesitation, but I just cannot seem to get my pen to move.)
Kinari: (Even though all I have to do is to handwrite the words on my mind…)
Kinari: (This is a letter for Kaguya-sama, and also a reflection on today’s events. I cannot seem to process my thoughts very well.)
Takato: Azekawa-san, your hand seems to have stopped moving. Could it be that you’re not very good at writing letters?
Kinari: …I suppose so. I cannot fathom what would be nice to write, nor how to tie them all together.
Takato: How about writing what has happened today in the gymnasium, one event at a time?
Takato: Sharing what you thought and felt at such exact moments with Kaguya-san is a way to go about it.
Kinari: (All of the occurrences that transpired today…)
Muneuji: ……
Kinari: …Thank you for your advice, teacher. I will attempt this method right away.

Muneuji: Ah, Azekawa-san, I’m glad you were in your dorm room.
Kinari: Is there something you need, Kaguya-sama?
Muneuji: The letters we wrote in mahorova Gymnasium were delivered just a while ago.
Kinari: !
Muneuji: Being able to hand my letter to you in person is a happy thing. It is a privilege reserved for myself only.
Kinari: Thank you very much, I’ll be sure to read it carefully.
Muneuji: Yes.
Muneuji: On another subject, I have spoken with the principal about the visitation for Asu High once more.
Muneuji: I brought up the deal with reading a letter in front of the entire student body as the conclusion for the visit… It has now been officially recognized and set as a condition.
Kinari: Understood. I would like to express my sincere thanks once more for setting this opportunity for me.
Kinari: I shall do my very best during the event so as not to embarrass you.
Muneuji: You do not need to feel so pressured. I am simply looking forward to your visit to our school.
Muneuji: More than anything… I pray that you experience what it is that you yearn for.
Muneuji: Now then, if you’ll excuse me, I shall be reading the letter you wrote me shortly after.
Kinari: Thank you for delivering it. I, too, will also read yours soon.
——Muneuji exits
Kinari: (A letter addressed to me… I wonder what Kaguya-sama has written in it?)
Kuguri: Plüss.
Kinari: !
Kuguri: What a lovely conversation you had moments ago.
Kinari: Yes. I wanted to experience what a place called “school” is like, and Kaguya-sama was of great help to me.
Kinari: It was thanks to him that I was able to attend one not just in mahorova, and soon in reality as well.
Kuguri: Both you and Muneuji are so very enthusiastic. Do you find amusement in playing human?
Kinari: It is a topic of interest to me.
Kinari: I feel as though there are many unknown concepts both within and outside of myself, concepts beyond emotion.
Kinari: (So, even if it’s cheap imitation…)
Kuguri: For a finale that tugs at one’s heartstrings, you’ll be reading a letter, I heard?
Kinari: (New memories form within me as I experience more and more things.)
Kuguri: I suppose they’re seeking out an incredibly sentimental or emotional speech.
Kuguri: …Something that stirs the human heart, something deeply human.
——Kinari opens the letter…

Dearest Azekawa-san,
Although it is a little distasteful that the first letter I wrote for you is part of a class activity, I’ve come around it, taking this as an opportunity to express my utmost gratitude to you.
I do not intend for this to be the case as I have only begun writing, but I ask for your forgiveness, should this letter become lengthy.
The more I think about this matter, the more things I’d like to impart to you——

Kuguri: The two of you have exchanged letters, but what could the contents be in yours, Plüss?
Kinari: What I wrote was…
Kinari: (I could still repeat what I had written word for word.)

Kinari: What is it that you wish to discuss with me, Kaguya-sama?
Muneuji: Azekawa-san, would you like to visit Hama Asunaro High School as HAMA’s Ward 11 Mayor?
Kinari: !
Muneuji: The thought crossed my mind simply by seeing you wear our school’s uniform. It may be a great experience to participate in a real school—in real life—and not just within this gymnasium.
Kinari: I couldn’t have asked for a better offer. However, would the school’s staff allow an outsider like I am to visit?
Muneuji: Truthfully… This may have been presumptuous of me, but I have already submitted a proposal to the Chairman and our Principal.
Muneuji: I received a response from them some time ago. It is allowed, but they have set a condition for it.
Kinari: Please tell me what it is they request.
Muneuji: …To make it an official event titled, “The 11th Ward Mayor’s Asu High Experience”.
Muneuji: We’ll have you undergo what a day in a life is like for an Asu High student, and at the finale, you’ll be reading a letter detailing your adventures in front of the entire student body.
Muneuji: …I’m sorry that this has been blown out of proportion, but I and everyone in Day2 will act as your support on the day of.
Muneuji: How about it?
Kinari: (It never crossed my mind that Kaguya-sama would resort to such lengths to help me…)
Kinari: (This is a once in a lifetime chance to learn more about “school”. But first, I must ask Master for permission to sign up…)

Takato: Have you all deepened your bonds with your classmates during break?
Kinari: Nishizono-sama had brewed some tea, and apart from partaking in it, everyone spent their time relaxing.
Takato: Great to hear that! Now to pep ourselves up, let’s have a surprise test!
Renga: A-A test…?!
Kiroku: Nishizono-san, your.. face has gone.. pale…
Renga: Uh… Um… Just got reminded of some bad memories. I’m your senior, so I’m sure it’ll be a piece of cake…?!
Ryui: What a pain in the ass…
Muneuji: Teacher, what sort of questions will there be for the test?
Takato: Classes are adjusted depending on participants, varying on difficulty levels and the scope of questions. But this time, we’ll have 5 high school subjects mixed together in the interest of testing your academic capabilities.
Takato: Kaguya-san and Kinugawa-san may possess an advantage as they are currently high school students.
Kinari: (While I have installed the necessary information learned from higher education materials, it’s possible I may not be able to answer should the questions be rather specific.)
Kinari: (...If that were the case, this may become the best chance to undergo the thrills behind surprise tests. Just as everyone would, I’ll try to figure out the right answer and deliver it.)
Muneuji: Hm…
Muneuji: (Although having diverse experience is recommended for us students to have in modern times, as they say, our duty lies in the pursuit of knowledge.)
Muneuji: (I shall give it my all.)
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
Takato: The correct answer for major problem #5.9 is X=1±√3i.
Renga: …….?
Takato: The next question, #5.10, will be the final one. X is the value and maximum of this rectangular prism… The answer is x=3, maximum volume = 576.
Renga: ……???
Takato: Would you like to see an illustrated view of the problem? Please look at the monitor right in front of you.
Ryui: …Tch, so you that’s how to do it. Can’t remember. Screwed up at the last question.
Kiroku: …I don’t… get it.. at all…
Muneuji: Fret not. This material is something we’ll learn in the near future.
Takato: …With that, all answers and explanations have been completed!
Takato: After self-grading your answers, did anyone in this class score full marks?
Kinari & Muneuji: Yes.
Renga: Kinari, Muneuji! That’s insane, are you two geniuses?!
Kiroku: Kaguya.. ranked first.. in the national mock.. exam, after all…
Ryui: Good for ya.
Muneuji: I’d no doubt in myself going in, yet we still ended up tying for first place. As expected of you, Azekawa-san.
Kinari: Not at all, the incredible one is you, Kaguya-sama.
Kinari: (I simply fought with only browsing through my memory data. It would be presumptuous of me to compare myself to Kaguya-sama, who had used his hard-earned knowledge.)
Muneuji: What are you saying? Both of us earned perfect scores, did we not?
Muneuji: It is rather frustrating that this match resulted in a draw, but let us celebrate each other’s efforts nonetheless.
Takato: That’s right! The two of you truly did bring about such fantastic results. Everyone, let’s give them a round of applause!
——Faint clapping is heard from the classmates
Kinari: (I have heard that students compete with their classmates based on rankings. But having experienced it firsthand, it does not sound as bad as it did initially.)
Kinari: (I can’t seem to calm myself in the face of all this applause… Still, I do not dislike this feeling.)
Muneuji: *smiles*
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
Kinari: (After a short break of fifteen minutes, the final lesson will soon begin. In comparison to the actual time elapsed, the perceived time is quite short.)
Kinari: (...I feel a little wistful now that it is coming to an end.)
Muneuji: …Azekawa-san, before the next class begins, would you like to partake in a match with me?
Kinari: A match? Are you referring to the likes of the surprise test earlier?
Muneuji: Yes, but as we had tied earlier for first place—let us settle this matter once and for all.
Kinari: (The materials for this match are an empty box and drawing paper. All these elements considered, the form this settlement will take seems to be…)
Kinari: The method you’d like to use is paper sumo. Am I correct, Kaguya-sama?
Muneuji: Yes, exactly. The box will act as the ring, and the sumo wrestlers are placed inside the box. You tap around the edges of the box as a way to knock down the opponent wrestler, or force them out of the ring. Doing so will grant you the title of the winner.
Muneuji: Kinugawa, would you like to act as our referee?
Kiroku: Okay.. sure…
Renga: Huh, what’s up?
Muneuji: Azekawa-san and I are having a duel with paper sumo. I’d like for our seniors to observe if they’d like.
Renga: Eh, but didn’t the teacher say that we should cheer each other on…?
Ryui: Ain’t it fine? ‘s a competition done with respect anyway.
Muneuji: Firstly, I’d like for you to draw the strongest wrestler you can think of on this paper.
Kinari: The strongest wrestler…
Kinari: (Then I shall find a sumo wrestler shape with the highest winning probability… No, that doesn’t seem right.)
Kinari: (The wrestler that would stand within this ring would be what I personally consider strongest. Rather than searching for something effective, I should create what I want to.)
Muneuji: Even with a thousand matches on my belt, I’ve seen so many unique varieties of these sumo wrestlers. I've yet to discover the perfect tactic, but… Alright.
Renga: You sure are a veteran, Muneuji.
Renga: Isn’t Kinari’s sumo wrestler kinda big? Is he surprisingly into the powerful types…?
Ryui: Makin’ it a tad tall might throw it off balance, though.
Kinari: To compensate for its height, I cut its shape so that its centre of gravity is positioned lower. Whether it can best a seasoned sumo wrestler, like Kaguya-sama, is another question.
Muneuji: …Have you prepared yourself, Azekawa-san?
Kinari: Yes.
Kiroku: Ready… set.. go…!
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
Kiroku: The winner is.. Kaguya…!
Renga: Woah!
Muneuji: That was a great match, thank you.
Kinari: ……
Kiroku: It was quite.. a fight.. But… The winning move is.. the makiotoshi¹…!
Renga: Maaan… That was such a heated battle! The last offense-defense moves put me in suspense!
Ryui: Looks like Kaguya won, yeah?
Muneuji: As disappointing as it may be for you, Azekawa-san, a duel is a duel.
Kinari: *sighs*
Kinari: I accept defeat. Thank you for the wonderful match, Kaguya-sama.
Muneuji: I should be the one expressing my thanks. Feel free to challenge me for a rematch anytime.

Muneuji: Present.
Takato: Kinugawa Kiroku-san.
Kiroku: Here…
Takato: Shiramitsu Ryui-san.
Ryui: …’ere.
Takato: Shiramitsu Ryui-saaaaan!
Ryui: …Man, shut up. I answered, yeah?
Takato: This is a school, so I am expecting you students to reply with energy. Clear? Then one more time—Shiramitsu Ryui-san!
Ryui: …Here. Geez, happy now?
Takato: Yes yes, that was perfect. Last up is Nishizono Renga-san!
Renga: …Present!
Takato: Just what I’d expect for a third year. Let’s begin our first period, Japanese Language.
Takato: Please check the compartments of your desks, everyone. Your textbooks will be there.
Muneuji: Hmm… It’s true. The teaching materials are provided in paper.
Kinari: Is this also part of Takato-sama’s particularity on this matter?
Takato: That is correct! Now turn your textbooks to page 38.
Takato: Today, we will be reading an abridged version of “The Sorrows of Young Teruteru¹”, adapted for textbook use. Beginning with Azekawa-san, please start reading.
Kinari: Understood, teacher.
Kinari: “To my unfortunate friend, Teruteru, whom I dedicate this writing to in his memory.
Kinari: “I hereby present it to you, dear readers, knowing you’ll reproach this act. Upon reading, you will surely be grateful to me.”
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
Kinari: “Surrounded by 30 of his descendants, Teruteru breathed his last at 12 ‘o clock midnight.”
Kinari: “He died at the age of 102 years, a truly peaceful death. The 99-year old Miss Gal Lotte could only watch as the coffin and her friend Bert slowly faded into the distance.”
Takato: Thank you, Azekawa-san. That was a very wonderful reading!
Muneuji: His voice faltered not once while speaking, giving his narration a different feeling in comparison to reading the text silently.
Renga: It was real easy to listen to! The content was a bit hard to understand, though…
Takato: Here’s a question for all of you. How do you think Gal Lotte felt having to confront Teruteru’s death?
Kiroku: …… ……
Renga: Um… Uh…
Takato: Nishizono-san, it’s okay if your answer isn’t very organized. Speak what’s on your mind!
Renga: Ah, um…!
Renga: I was just thinking that if I were in her shoes, I’d probably feel regretful.
Takato: I see, I see. Let’s hear from Kinugawa-san next.
Kiroku: I think.. she might.. reminisce about the past.. and end up buried.. in sentimentality…
Takato: Mhm, I understand. What about Shiramitsu-san?
Ryui: At the end of the day, he died at 102 and she’s alive at 99, right? Even after everything that happened, it’d still be pretty sad to say goodbye to an old friend, right?
Takato: Hmm… So that’s what your answer is.
Kinari: (….My answer does not quite align with Nishizono-sama and the others’ ideas. Could it be incorrect?)
Kinari: (After all, to me, questions relating to emotional troubles prove the most difficult.)
Takato: May I hear your answer, Azekawa-san?
Kinari: To me…
Kinari: ……
Takato: Take your time.
Kinari: …According to the text, Lotte saw Teruteru off with a “calm” feeling blossoming in her heart.
Takato: Thank you. Then lastly, Kaguya-san.
Muneuji: Azekawa-san and I are of the same opinion.
Kinari: !
Muneuji: Her feelings are rather complex and may be difficult to explain. Her regrets in the past, the sorrows brought by parting, and the love she held for Teruteru. All of it mixes together in a swirl of emotions, both negative and positive.
Muneuji: However, as Lotte grew older, the text suggests that she affirms and wholeheartedly accepts her own feelings.
Muneuji: The complicated feelings she held for Teruteru must have transformed into treasured memories filled with love over time, granting her the peace she longed for.
Kinari: …………
Kinari: (…Our answers are the same in theory, but the logic and viewpoint cannot be any more different. Kaguya-sama’s answer brings me great interest.)
Muneuji: ……
Kinari: (……? Did he just smile at me? But what is the meaning behind that smile, I wonder?)
Kinari: (I feel some sort of warmth deep in my chest… It feels comforting. What does this reaction signify?)
Takato: Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, all! Regarding Lotte’s feelings at the end of the story…
Takato: There is no correct answer!
Renga: H-Huh…?
Kiroku: No.. right answer…?
Renga: That sort of thing exists?! I was curious about what it was, though…?!
Takato: The purpose of this class is to challenge the students’ imagination and to widen their perspective through classic literature, after all.
Takato: If I had a say, however, whatever the answer you arrived at after thinking so carefully about the text is what’s correct.
Ryui: …That’s just chop logic.
Takato: I can hear you over there!
Kinari: (Challenging the limits of imagination as well as widening one’s perspective…. I understand now. This was a very fruitful lesson for me.)
Kinari: (…What will the next lesson be like?)

Ryui: Finally, break time.
Kiroku: Looks like it’s.. for about.. forty-five minutes…?
Kinari: It is a little more time-allotted in comparison to the standard.
Muneuji: That’s likely due to mahorova Gymnasium seeking to put an emphasis towards student-to-student exchange.
Renga: That’s what Takato-sensei said earlier too.
Kinari: (What sort of conversations occur between students during their recess period? I must behave in a manner that corresponds to the others, but…)
Renga: Oh, looks like there’s a tea set on that shelf! As your senior, let me make you all some tea.
Muneuji: Thank you very much. You seem to have a penchant for tea, Nishizono-san.
Renga: Pretty much. The tea here is… Oh, I know this type! It’s the luxurious sort that celebs like to drink.
Kinari: It is a European brand best known for supplying to the royal families.
Renga: It’s okay for me to pour a cup for everyone, right? …Ryui, you’re having some too?
Ryui: Yup. ‘s long as it’s milk tea with extra sugar.
Renga: Got it, got it. Geez, what a selfish junior. …It won’t hurt to talk to us more, you know?
Muneuji: Hm… What could be here that would pair well with tea…
Muneuji: Kinugawa, look at this.
Kiroku: Ah…! That’s a.. cookie tin…!
Muneuji: To think he had prepared such a large container… Takato-senpai’s generosity knows no bounds.
Kiroku: We can have.. as much as we’d like.. even if we share…
Renga: Heeey, Kinari. How do you like your tea?
Kinari: I’ll have it in the way you recommend, Nishizono-sama.
Renga: Alright, leave it to me. My go-to recommendation is brewing the tea strong, then adding lots of milk. It’s really tasty, so look forward to it!
Kinari: Yes, I’ll be waiting.
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
Kinari: (Ryui-sama is asleep on the sofa. Kaguya-sama is reading a book on an armchair, and Kinugawa-sama is roughly sketching him as his model.)
Kinari: (I was thinking of how to behave during breaks but, as I see it, everyone spends their time on their own affairs.)
Kinari: (…….The tea Nishizono-sama brewed for me is still warm.)
Renga: Did you like the milk tea, Kinari?
Kinari: Yes, it was very delicious.
Renga: You know, about that question from class earlier… What did you think about it having no one right answer?
Renga: I’ve only ever gotten X’s on my test results, so. Encountering something like that was a first for me.
Kinari: I agree with what Takato-sensei said. I did not think that everyone else’s answer was incorrect either.
Renga: Ah, that’s true… Muneuji’s answer in particular was real compelling.
Kinari: I also think that the answer you gave after much thought was quite interesting, Nishizono-sama.
Renga: You’re serious?!
Kinari: Very much so.
Renga: To be honest… I only agreed to be here ‘cuz Muneuji asked a favor from me, but when I heard it’ll be about school and there’ll be classes, I got a bit scared.
Renga: But since every one of my classmates is from HAMA Tours, and the teacher seems like a warm person… I’m starting to think that school’s not that bad after all.
Kinari: I agree. Despite having only attended one class, I’ve already learned so much from this beta-testing project.
Renga: Now that I think about it, I’ve never heard how you joined. Did Muneuji invite you too?
Kinari: …Not quite. It is thanks to Kaguya-sama’s making arrangements for my sake that I was able to participate.
Renga: Ah, is that right?!
Kinari: That is because… I have never attended school before.
Renga: …O-Oh!
Kinari: So I thought that by experiencing school life, I would be able to gain something that I currently lack.
Renga: To gain something you lack, eh…
Renga: (I see, Kinari’s never gone to school.)
Renga: (Up until the day I switched places with Kiba, I’ve never gone to school either.)
Renga: (…Kinari probably has his own reasons too.)
Renga: I don’t know what exactly it is you’re lacking and all, but…
Renga: I hope you do get it someday. If there’s anything I can do to help, just tell me. I’m your senior, after all!
Kinari: Thank you very much. You are a very reliable senior, Nishizono-sama.
Renga: Ehehe, yeah!
Muneuji: Azekawa-san, do you have a moment?
Kinari: Is something the matter?
Muneuji: There is a topic I wish to discuss with you. Would you like to come with me for a moment?
Kinari: Hm? Understood.

Kinari: Instructions from faculty staff will be provided when it is appropriate. Currently setting interactions with schoolmates as a top priority.
Kinari: In a situation where all attempts at further verbal communication proves futile—then, as a last resort, hand-to-hand communication will be conducted.
Kinari: (Master, Kaguya-sama, Raito… As well as the Original. I never thought that I’d experience going to school one day, just like they have.)
Kinari: School Preparation Status at 100%. Now logging into mahorova.
——Kinari logs into the metaverse
📍 Location: mahorova — Lobby
Kinari: I apologize for the wait. I see that everyone has already arrived.
Muneuji: Hello, Aze…kawa-san…?
Kiroku: That… His.. avatar…
Muneuji: Is that not Asu High’s school uniform…?
Ryui: Sure doesn’t look out of place on ‘ya.
Renga: Did you go out of your way to prepare this just for today? That’s amazing!
Kinari: Yes. Based on prior research, results show that wearing a uniform is essential on the way to school.
Kinari: Thanks to Kurama-sama’s kindness, I was able to scan Hama Asunaro High School’s uniform, and wear it for today’s activities.
Muneuji: I see…
Man Displayed on a Commercial Monitor: “Days where you’d feel like standing still, and days where you seem to have lost your way towards a destination may pass by….”
Renga: Hm? …Ah, the sound’s coming from the monitor over there.
Kinari: It seems they are broadcasting advertisements in mahorova.
Man Displayed on a Commercial Monitor: “But, you will never lose the “origins” that once fostered you.”
Man Displayed on a Commercial Monitor: “The scent of dust after school, the sunsets you gaze at from your classroom’s windows, and the time spent with your dearest school friends.”
Kinari: (The man in the footage is wearing a school uniform, although… He appears to be older than the average schooling age.)
Man Displayed on a Commercial Monitor: “Let us return to our very origins in mahorova Gymnasium. Now accepting new enrollees. See, you can even hear the bells toll in the distance——”
Kiroku: Right now… The gymnasium.. is…
Muneuji: Indeed, the ad we all viewed just now depicts where we’d go later. In addition, the person you all saw is actually a graduate of Asu High and a former member of its student council, Takato-senpai.
Muneuji: Once again… From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank you all for participating in my senior’s beta testing project.
Muneuji: My senior requested me to “round up members from a wide age range” to participate as classmates.
Muneuji: To everyone here who agreed to cooperate, I am truly grateful.
Renga: You take on some of the modeling part-time jobs I can’t do, Muneuji, so asking me for this much is all good!
Kiroku: Me too… I’m glad.. you asked.. me to join… I think.. I’ll be able to get.. some inspiration…
Ryui: Oi, don’t tell me I was the only one forced to go as compensation?
Kinari: However, the fact that you still showed up on time to participate displays how wonderful your character is, just as Toi-sama has told me.
Ryui: Huh? …I mean, you did fix my hoverboard, so I guess I’ll go along with it for what it’s worth.
Kiroku: Ryui-kun… Let’s get.. along…
Ryui: Yeah. Same to ya, Kiro.
Kiroku: I never thought.. I’d be able to go.. to the same school as you… I’m excited.. for this…
Renga: Wonder what mahorova Gymnasium’s like…?
——A certain someone walks up to the group
???: You’ll find out when you get there. Isn’t that right, Muneuji-kun?
Ryui: ! You’re… from that ad’s…
Takato: Oh! Thank you for viewing our commercial. My name is Takato. I own the metaverse service “mahorova Gymnasium”, which is scheduled for official launch soon.
Takato: To everyone in HAMA Tours, let’s all make this session a great one.
Kinari: Please take care of us, Takato-sama.
Muneuji: We are in your care today, senpai. I was looking forward to today, as I had heard this project was in the hands of a senior colleague.
Takato: Sorry for springing this upon you on such a busy time, Muneuji-kun. I’ve asked around my acquaintances for testing participants, but I appreciate you were able to round up some people.
Takato: We want everyone to enjoy this service from beginning to end. Now then, let us strike while the iron is hot! Ahem.
Takato: …First of all, I must apologize.
Renga: Eh, for what?
Takato: There were plans to implement special uniform avatars for you all to try out today. Unfortunately, I got swept up in all the little details that I’ve run out of time to finish. As such, I’d like for you all to participate as you are.
Muneuji: …Perhaps it was the right call for Azekawa-san to wear a uniform.
Kinari: I suppose so.
Takato: In addition, as this is a beta test, I will be personally acting as mahorova Gymnasium’s teacher.
Kinari: (So Takato-sama would be our instructor…)
Takato: That’s all I needed to say. Let’s head to school now!
✉︎ー✉︎ー✉︎
📍 Location: Lounge
——The flames inside the fireplace crackle
Renga: Woah…!
Kiroku: So this.. is a gymnasium…
Kinari: There is a warm fireplace and antique furnishings for its interior. A space with an old-fashioned aesthetic to perfectly recreate what a Gymnasium is like… I see.
Takato: This is the lounge. It’s the room where students can relax and entertain themselves.
Renga: No matter where you look, everywhere’s photogenic…!
Renga: Hey hey, don’t you think this sofa and I look great together?
Muneuji: Nishizono-san blends perfectly with this landscape. Truly picturesque, as one might say.
Renga: Hehe, yeah, right!
Ryui: …? Since this is a school and all, this is where we’re havin’ classes, or?
Takato: No, there is a separate classroom for that purpose. You are correct about classes being held, however.
Takato: mahorova Gymnasium is a short-term entertainment service, designed with a curriculum to encourage students to interact amongst themselves, along with the recreational activities and courses provided.
Takato: Whether one participates solo or with friends, we hope it remains as a place for our customers to return to… That’s the idea behind this project.
Muneuji: I think it’s a fantastic service to offer.
Kinari: Takato-sensei, I have a question.
Takato: Yes, Azekawa-san?
Kinari: Why did you decide to choose a gymnasium as a theme for this school rather than a traditional form of schooling?
Takato: That is a great question. To put it bluntly! I wanted to build the ideal academy that I admire…! In other, other words, it’s my hobby!
Ryui: A hobby, he says.
Takato: And that’s what I’d proclaimed and all, but all sorts of people start going to school during their formative years, do they not?
Takato: Putting it simply, I personally believe that a school heavily influences a person’s “origins”.
Takato: To me, it’s where you can look back to during times where you’ve lost your way, or when you’d like to return to your starting point.
Kiroku: That’s.. what he said.. in that ad…
Takato: mahorova Gymnasium is intended to be a place where you can indulge in nostalgia, or even make new friends.
Takato: I have hopes that this school can become a new starting point so they may move forward in their lives, to all of its visitors.
Kinari: A place to return to, and a place where one can take their first step forward…
Kinari: (This must be what a school is. I wonder if it will symbolize something like this to me.)
Takato: …Ah, I’ve rambled on for far too long. Before we begin our classes, there is something I’d like to confirm with you all.
Takato: You were given a school account prior, yes? When you made it, what year were you assigned to?
Renga: I got assigned as a third year.
Ryui: …Mine’s second.
Kinari: I am assigned as a first year student. How about you, Kaguya-sama?
Muneuji: Both Kinugawa and I are first years, too.
Takato: That’s the setting mahorova Gymnasium gave you all. Please, have fun with roleplaying as you like in this gymnasium!
Ryui: Setting, roleplay… huh.
Renga: Th-Then, aren’t I the most senior one here…?! I need to be a good role model for everyone else.
Kiroku: Thank goodness.. I’m a first year…
Muneuji: I, as well. It would be rather disconcerting if I’d suddenly become a senior to Nishizono-san.
——Ding dong! Ding dong!
Kinari: What time do these bells indicate?
Takato: …Ahem. This is the first period’s warning bell. Now then, my students! Let’s move to our classroom.
Renga: Alright, everyone! Let’s go, make sure to follow behind me.

📍 Location: flower Laundry
Nagi: Muneuji, Kinari… Thanks so much for helping out today. From now on, you two are mine, Sonia’s, and flower Laundry’s lifetime benefactors… No, maybe even our gods.
Sonia: I thought for shure it’d turn into a dishashter today, but thankfully that shtuff didn’t happen!
Muneuji: I’m glad I could be of help to you both.
Kinari: We will take our leave shortly, but please take care of your health and avoid overexerting yourselves.
Kinari: According to an analysis of Hachinoya-sama’s business operation habits, you appear to be experiencing considerable weariness from work.
Nagi: Not only did you help me, but you’re also looking out for me… …*sniff*
Sonia: I’ll be extra shure to watch over Nagi-shan. You two, pleashe take care on the way home!
Muneuji: Then, we shall be on our way.
📍 Location: Residential Area
Kinari: flower Laundry’s number of visitors and order calls for today have reached a record-breaking amount.
Muneuji: It’s the season where important official events are happening, after all. It can’t be helped.
Muneuji: It’s quite likely that this busyness will continue moving forward… The same will apply for the Student Council, too.
Kinari: (The Student Council. Definition: a school’s self-governing organization made up by its students. Kaguya-sama is a member of Hama Asunaro High School’s student council.)
Muneuji: Once the worst is behind us, our peaceful days will surely return. I’ll have to endure until then.
Kinari: (Verifying that Kaguya-sama’s lips curved upward. It is a similar reaction to when Master was talking about school. This must be an expression of ‘affection’.)
Kinari: …Kaguya-sama. May I interrogate you on something?
Muneuji: But of course. Please, ask away.
Kinari: Do you feel that “school” is important to you?
Muneuji: Hm? I do “feel” as such, but… Why do you inquire? Could it be that you’re interested in school, Azekawa-san?
Kinari: Yes. The reason behind it makes for a long story, though to shorten it…
Kinari: I am modeled after a certain deceased person. The person who my existence was based on… For this, I’ll call him the “Original”.
Muneuji: ……! So that was the case…
Kinari: Recently, I have been contemplating about and reflecting on the Original’s existence. In the process of doing so, I have confirmed what he kept close to his heart.
Kinari: …As for what those were, that would be the time he spent with his school friends.
Kinari: The Original mainly spent as much time as he could with his friends instead of listening to his Father’s orders¹.
Muneuji: …………
Kinari: The Original’s Father is also my Developer. As such, I cannot exactly fathom what the Original’s priorities in life were…
Kinari: But after listening to you and Master talk about “school”, I may be beginning to slightly understand how truly important it was.
Kinari: My interest only grows more. However, I am an android. ...Experiencing a school life is but a distant concept in my eyes.
Muneuji: (Seeing Azekawa-san in such low spirits is quite an unusual sight. It must be upsetting for him to be unable to experience the school life he longs for.)
Muneuji: (If only there was something I could do…)
Muneuji: Ah…!
Kinari: Kaguya-sama?
Muneuji: This “school life” may be more of a pretend play, but it could be of help to you.
Muneuji: Azekawa-san. Would you like to enroll in a virtual school space with me?
Kinari: ! Whether it is real or an imitation, so long as I can simulate the experience, then I will gladly take the opportunity.
Muneuji: Understood. As our first order of business towards our path of learning——
Muneuji: We must search for our fellow classmates.
📍 Location: Downtown HAMA
Ryui: Shit, where’d this thing get all busted…
Kinari: Kaguya-sama, a prospective classmate has entered my line of sight. Please leave everything to me.
Muneuji: Oh, it’s Ryui-san.
Ryui: …What?
Kinari: (I must communicate with many others for the sake of developing my sensitivity… Such is what Ooguro-sama taught me.)
Kinari: (I have observed that people who I have few interactions with, such as Ryui-sama, would be suitable candidates as “classmates”. Now engaging in negotiations.)
Kinari: Did your hoverboard break down, Ryui-sama?
Ryui: …Yeah, somethin’ like that. Just won’t move all of a sudden.
Kinari: If you’d like, I could repair it for you.
Ryui: Huh? You talk, but can you do it for real?
Kinari: Yes, please excuse me.
Kinari: (This model number is equipped with an AI-powered control system. If I access it directly, then identifying the cause of error is no problem.)
——Beep, beep!
Ryui: (He’s kinda just touching it though… Can he actually fix this thing?)
Kinari: (No problems detected in the engine’s system. Then, after disabling the safety device… Restarting control systems——)
——The hoverboard’s engine whirrs as it takes flight
Ryui & Muneuji: !
Kinari: There seems to be a malfunction in the safety device, which caused it to cease operations altogether. Despite managing to have it up and running normally, I still recommend taking it to a shop for maintenance as a precaution.
Ryui: …You’re kiddin’.
Muneuji: Hoh. As expected of Azekawa-san, swiftly arriving at a solution.
Ryui: ……You actually managed to repair it. Thanks.
Kinari: Therefore, I would like to request Ryui-sama for compensation in exchange for repairing the hoverboard.
Ryui: Y-You…! Is this some kinda new scam or what?!
Kinari: I’ve no intention of asking for monetary compensation. Simply put, I’d like for Ryui-sama to become one of my classmates.
Ryui: …….Huh?
📍 Location: HAMA House — Monkey Room
Kinari: (Who could’ve predicted that this everyday, ordinary, middle-aged janitor, was in truth, the chairman of the school board——!)
Kinari: (…This is the 13th instance this has happened in a pattern. In other words, it is likely a common occurrence within schools.)
Kinari: (With this, I have watched every school drama there is within the past decade. It should be enough information to understand what “school” is like.)
Raito: Kinari, isn’t it about time to turn off the lights?
Kinari: …Yes. Input processing complete. I’ll turn on sleep mode shortly as well, so there is no problem.
Raito: Were you watching something just now? Sorry for interrupting.
Raito: Well then, good night.
Kinari: Wait a moment, Raito. Before you go to sleep, there is something I’d like to ask you.
Raito: Sure, what is it?
Kinari: Is there anything I must keep in mind towards having a healthy school life?
Raito: School life…?
Raito: (It’d probably be insensitive of me to ask why… Besides, it’s getting late.)
Raito: Let’s see… I wasn’t exactly an exemplary student by any means, but I think it’d be best to listen to the teacher in moderation.
Kinari: Listen to the teacher in moderation. I have recorded it.
Raito: And, more than anything, treasure your interactions with your school friends.
Raito: I wasn’t able to do that myself, that’s why… Even now, I’m a bit regretful of letting all that time go to waste.
Kinari: ……
Raito: Still, it is a place where kids in their formative years are all together. Things may not go as swimmingly as they should.
Raito: Thus, in the case where our values just can’t seem to align——
Raito & Kinari: We’ll let our fists do the talking.
Raito: …Well now, you’ve got it down pat already.
Kinari: Self-studying has taught me what to expect. Thank you for the valuable advice, nonetheless, Raito.
Raito: Glad to be of help to you, Kinari. Then, good night for real this time.
Kinari: Good night.
——Click!
Kinari: (Setting up an alarm—completed. Just to make sure, I’ll double check it… No problems found.)
Kinari: (…Tomorrow is my first day of school. I cannot allow myself to oversleep.)

📍 Location: Family Restaurant
Chief: (I’m glad Kinari-kun tagged along for today’s external meeting.)
Chief: (Since it was about a package tour for Tottori, his experience during the study tour was a major help.)
Chief: ….…Huh, he sure is taking a long time. Is the drink bar that crowded?
——Kinari returns to where the Chief is seated
Kinari: Sorry to keep you waiting, Master.
Chief: Ah, welcome ba——
Chief: Woah, what a crazy-colored drink you’ve got there…!
Kinari: The preparation of this drink required more time than expected.
Chief: (I thought it was rare that he wanted to get something from the drink bar… Was it because he wanted to make this?)
Chief: Does… it taste good…?
Kinari: That, I’ve yet to know. I replicated this drink in order to verify something.
Kinari: It is dubbed, “Goz’s Special Drink”. It’s something the Original’s—Kinari’s¹ friend, used to concoct quite often.
Chief: Eh? Kinari-san’s…?
Kinari: Yes. Kinari’s friend, Gozu², was a male high school student, who often invited him to karaoke after school. He made these drinks at that place’s bar.
Chief: Oh, I see. You can mix and match all sorts of drinks there, after all.
Chief: But still, why did you suddenly think of recreating it?
Kinari: …I want to understand the things Kinari treasured the most.
Kinari: I possess all sorts of information related to him stored inside my database. In that regard, this drink was from an image file photographed by Kinari himself from back then.
Kinari: In short, the drink illustrated in the photo must have held some sort of importance to the Original that he thought of preserving it.
Chief: (So that’s what it was. Like always, Kinari-kun is trying to understand Kinari-san in full depth.)
Kinari: The Developer’s——
Kinari: …Nevermind.
Chief: (…Huh?)
Kinari: Kinari cherished his memories with his school friends very much.
Kinari: …Master, please forgive me for this abrupt question.
Kinari: School friends, and even school itself… Are they truly so great that humans cherish them?
Chief: School, huh…
Chief: (Now that I think about it, Kinari-kun has never gone to school, hasn’t he?)
Chief: People in various upbringings and environments probably have different ideas about school…
Chief: I think that school is an important space where people in the same generation with diverse personalities are gathered in one spot. By studying together, bonds slowly begin to foster among the students.
Chief: To me, at least, it was a place worth going to.
Kinari: So that’s how it was for you, Master…
Chief: …In other words, school is one of those places where people learn their emotions and proper behavior.
Kinari: A place where they learn their emotions and proper behavior….
Chief: Usually, it’s where someone learns how to connect with other people aside from their families, and deepen those bonds while at it. Of course, you’ll meet those you may not get along with… These days, even those fights have become good memories to me! Hehe.
Kinari: (Nostalgia, Affection, Happiness. I detect nothing but positivity from Master’s expressions.)
Kinari: Thank you very much. After listening to your story, I think I have grasped the importance of school experience by a small margin.
Chief: Yeah! And that um, Goz’s Special Drink? I hope it gives you some sort of idea.
Kinari: Yes. I will try it immediately.
Kinari: ……
Chief: So? Is it yummy?
Kinari: ………………
Chief: (He’s frozen solid…)
Kinari: …Unfortunately, I can only surmise that this taste disagrees with the general populace’s preference in flavor.
📍 Location: HAMA House — Horse Room
Muneuji: Oh, is it this hour already?
Muneuji: I apologize, Uu-chan. I have to wake up rather early tomorrow, so I must go to sleep soon.
Ushio: …Don’t tell me it’s for Student Council duties again? I know you’ve been busy lately, but surely there’s a limit to all this.
Muneuji: It’s not, as I promised to help out at flower Laundry tomorrow. It seems that Hachinoya-san and Sonia-san cannot handle the influx of customers during this season all by themselves.
Ushio: Ah, got it. Makes sense.
Muneuji: In addition, tomorrow’s helpers will not only consist of myself—Azekawa-san will be there, too. They must have been in such want of help that they would gladly accept aid from anyone.
Ushio: (Just how busy are they…? Well, whatever, if Azekawa-san’s there, then he should be able to lighten some of the burden on Muu-chan’s shoulders.)
Ushio: Yeah, give it your all. But only in moderation.
Muneuji: Mhm.
——Ding! A notification pops up
Muneuji: Hm? …It’s been a while since I’ve heard from this name.
Muneuji: (Going out of his way to contact me, what could——?)
Muneuji: ……
Muneuji: Uu-chan, do you have a minute?
Ushio: What’s up?
Muneuji: Would you be interested in “gymnasiums”?
Ushio: Gy.. Gymnasium?
Muneuji: To explain its concept in a way familiar to JPN, it’s something similar to a European all-boys boarding school. Or so I have heard.
Ushio: …Not really interested.
Muneuji: I understand. Very well, then, forget it.
Muneuji: (...Is it possible for me to find anyone else harboring at least a shred of curiosity?)
Muneuji: (As it is a request from the Student Council’s senior alumnus, I’d like to cooperate as much as possible, but… Given the circumstances at hand, it may prove difficult to encounter somebody.)
Muneuji: (...I’ll consider refusing the offer, so I’ll reply as soon as I can.)
