Love's Latest Victims | Niko & Colette
Colette remained silent, smiling a little but not too much. After all, a grin would be the first sign of the world ending. She was fairly sure he shouldnât be trusting her as much as he was. He grew too attached to her, far too quickly. But, as stories prove it, gods were selfish. She could lie through her teeth all she wanted, but she knew the truth. Somewhat unfortunately, so did her sisters. The thought erased when Niko thanked her. She laced their fingers and gave a slight nod. âYouâre welcome.â In translation, they were children. He could be an asshole as much as he pleased, but his sole purpose was to protect children. She use to make fun of people who tried to be heroic.Â
"Havenât cats learned anything?â she pressed, âgods can make felines go zap! And yet still as cocky asâŠwellâŠus.â With a chuckle, she turned and walked backwards, âwatchingâ her movements until she was a few steps away from the ledge. She wasnât being all that nice to him, but while she was a fan of sappy moments, she wanted a thrill. Having Niko believe it was a giant drop with amusing and the moment he realized it wasnât more than a seven foot plunge into safe water, heâd either laugh or kill her. âI could have. But every stone in this place has been turned over and searched. Itâs cool, trust me.â She reached out for his hand again. âJust look, will you?â
"Nine lives and a predisposition to avenge losses. And we're clever. The gods complain about humanity's hubris," a grin tugged at the corners of his lips, "but they forget that their own can be their undoing. Immortality and being indestructible does not make one untouchable." Granted, cats were proud too. But pride came after the task at hand, something he'd heard gods forgot to do. Some of them, anyway. Niko was confident that a Fate was above such simple mistakes. Or he hoped that his was, anyways, not wanting to see her get hurt for any reason, especially not because she was too proud to put her safety first.
Niko looked up when Colette extended her hand. For a moment, he appraised it, the voice of his instincts screaming at him to hiss and retreat to the safety of the tree line. But he trusted her, whether that made him mentally unsound or not, and placed his hand in hers, holding it tightly. Ever so slowly, cautious and suspicious of the ledge, he slunk over to stand beside Colette, glancing over it. The jump wasn't nearly as bad as what it could have been, but it was still enough to make Niko's skin crawl. Squeezing her hand gently, he glanced over at the Fate, eyeing her almost suspiciously, "You know I hate you, right?" He would do it. But he didn't have to like it.
