This morning I spoke to a group of students in the Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA) department at St. Petersburg College in Florida. There were two simple questions that left the biggest impression on my mind. "Nicole, what advice would you give to someone wanting to go into artist management?" My response, "Develop the skill of self-encouragement." It's something that is not talked about. It's actually misrepresented by many that say 'Keep going. Persevere, have patience and so on.' My response to that is 'What, then, do you do when your patience has run out? What do you do when you're tired of persevering? What do you do when you think a client's development or his/her project should be further along than it actually is? I finished answering his question by saying, 'It's identical to running on a treadmill. When you're tired of running and sweating, you look down at the screen and you have three minutes left. You can either get off or you can kick into gear your self motivation. If you workout, particularly if you run or lift weights, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. That's when you start saying "Come on Nicole. Let's keep going baby. We got this. We're almost there. Two minutes left. Thirty seconds left or LETS GO BABY! Five more reps. Let's push it.' It's just that. It's self-motivation that keeps you focused. It's what keeps you going after you've heard 'No' eight times in one day, when you haven't received a response from a producer or executive about your client's budget, or the person that previously said 'yes' to your client's project has changed their mind. It's your mental conditioning that will carry you far. It will keep you focused and in the flow of creating the next opportunity. Also, not allowing one person's 'No' to fu*k off the remainder of your day. I'm almost certain that one or two more opportunities will present itself immediately after you've received a 'No'. If you're too pissed and angry then you'll blow a new opportunity. Self-sabotage f*cks off a lot of dreams and opportunities. The other question that I was asked was, 'What's the key..." My response, "HUSTLE. There's no substitute for hustle. It's just that simple. No rock unturned." I said a little bit more, but that was the sum total of my response. I've done some fairly exciting things in my young career and have worked with some amazing artists, but that's NEVER a reason to stop hustling. NEVER." I mentioned the music industry is over-saturated with artists and product (music). There's always someone looking to become the next ____. Hustle is an action word. Little did the student know that it was my sense of hustle (in action) that created my opportunity to speak with him and his class members. Stay Focused Dear Friends. #SFDF
