Coffin, Peter. “How Toxic Fandom Ruins It For Everyone.” Medium, Cultivated Identity, 20 Nov. 2015, medium.com/cultivated-identity/how-the-toxic-parts-of-fandom-ruin-it-for-everyone-else-d51b9d0bf0aa.
Coffin begins the paper with talking about how media influences us whether we like it or not and that this can be both good and bad. He then transitions into an example of fandom gone very bad and how we as a society has kind of done it ourselves with the marketing and media we have today. He ties this example back to the media and begins again with how marketing and media is targeted to some people very heavily and what parts of people it targets to make it work. He then delves into another controversial debate of how media affects us in the argument of whether violent video games make violent kids and killers. He also delves into the marketing behind most video games being geared directly towards white cis males so a part of the fandom behind these things will lash out when they see someone who does not fit that description trying to join. He then moves on with gaming and how youtube has become a huge part of it and the youtubers therein have massive influence over their followers. He then goes on to tie all of his topics back together under how fandom and just liking something can go bad.
This article is not the absolute most trustworthy of sources but it is good for presenting the authors ideas and he does use examples that could be useful.
I will likely not use this exact source in my paper but the ideas presented as well as some of the examples give me another place to look for more information.
