Wow!
hello! I figured I'd ask you because you seem pretty large on knitblr (so other people who might have experience might see it & have tips even if you don't...) I've been knitting for a while but am just starting to seriously get into it--my difficulty being that I have joint hypermobility (g-HSD) so I find that knitting can lead to some serious hand pain. I was wondering if you had any tips for that might help my finger joints not hurt so much (since pain seems to be common among ppl who knit).
Hello! I’d absolutely love to boost this for you! Hopefully someone with some first hand experience in this can help.
In the mean time, there are the little things we do to keep knitting pains at bay such as frequent breaks, stretches, and (for me) keeping warm drinks on hand so I can pick them up and reheat my joints when they too cold and stuff; but I also don’t have any outside factors for hand pain, it’s literally just the knitting.
🤞someone will have better insight than me. Hope this helps!
Aren’t there like rings for joinst so the don’t “over bend”? They are called “Finger splints” and look Hella cute. Maybe try it out?
i get debilitating wrist pain (not finger pain though) but i’ve found compression gloves help a lot–there’s compression gloves that cover the finger joints, i’d suggest giving those a try?
but more importantly, the style of knitting that you use (and how you tension your yarn) can have a massive impact on pain. for example, i generally knit using russian style, which is similar to continental except the yarn rests over the back of your hand and is tensioned between your relaxed fingers. this is a very non-strenuous way to do it. however, when i’m doing 3 stranded colorwork, I’ll have two colors in my left hand doing russian style and the other color in my right hand doing english style, and the movement of throwing the yarn and keeping it tensioned leads to pain within a few minutes. if i’d been taught knitting by an english style knitter, i would have given up very quickly, i think.
so my point is, i’d recommend trying different knitting styles and seeing if one is easier on your fingers. any style that involves pulling tightly or keeping your hand in a strained position is ALWAYS going to cause pain if your wrists/fingers/hands are already compromised.
The base of my thumbs and my wrists are hypermobile and cause me pain (other finger joints are also hypermobile but not causing any problems) and I recently had a couple appointments with an OT to make sure I wasn’t doing any damage. Good news is I’m not, bad news is, it isn’t going to get better or go away completely.
I wear compression braces now for support
They’re a bit awkward and I have had to adjust how o do some things, but I haven’t lost any functionality. Pain has improved significantly, and I don’t need to stop any of my hobbies.
My OT said usually he’d recommend exercises, but the movements I do on a regular basis are close enough, and if anything his recommendation is to do less. Not stop anything completely, but actually spend time not doing things with my hands (I haven’t figured out how to do that yet…).
No one has mentioned stretching yet so I will. Arthritis runs in my family and when I knit my fingers get stiff and hurt sometimes so here are some stretches I do before I knit and when my hands hurt.

I’m getting a head start on my spring cleaning by using up the scrap yarn I have.
Now to buy more yarn
