Once the tour was wrapped up, they headed to Luxe to pick up Vil’s tiara, his outfit's pièce de résistance. It should have been a smooth transition so they could make it to the red carpet, but…
“Luxe is closed?” Vil commented, noting the sign on the door.
“Temporarily,” Azul read. “Something must have happened.”
For the first time this entire trip, everyone was on the same page: Something was wrong.
They quickly entered the building, the employees all in a panic.
“Mr, Schoenheit!” An employee exclaimed, catching the attention of their co-workers.
“Our humblest apologies!” Another said while bowing his head as low as it could go. “The tiara you ordered hasn’t arrived yet!”
“What?!” Vil shouted, eyes widening in shock and disbelief.
“There was a traffic accident, and the truck…”
Ace leaned over to Yu. “That’s bad bad news, right?”
Jamil shook his head. “This is a disaster for a company like Luxe. This festival is a global event; if it gets out that Vil’s tiara never arrived, the brand image will take a massive hit.”
Vil crossed his arms, glaring at the panicking workers. “What? An accident occurred? Surely for something as important as this, you would have had a back-up plan or two. This is severely unprofessional for a company of your standing.”
The shop manager bowed. “Yes, of course. We will take full responsibility. We will find a replacement as soon as possible.”
He just scoffed. “Surely you know the importance of this event. Anything unworthy will only detract from the entire outfit.”
“We will find the most fitting accessory to fit with your Luxe couture!”
With that, they scurried off, debating about what they should do. Yu could only grimace in sympathy. It really was unfortunate that such an incident occurred, but there really isn’t a way to magically summon the tiara even in a world full of magic. She glanced around the store as Vil rejected offer after offer, staring at the purple interior walls. She remembered being caught off-guard when they first entered, not used to such a vibrant color decorating the inside of a store. It really was a rich person place, huh? Even the changing curtains were a beautiful black littered will glitter that replicated stars that surprisingly matched the purple… walls…
Hm? Purple?
Like Vil’s outfit?
“You’re LUXE!” Vil shouted, snapping her out of her thoughts. “Quit groveling and show me what you can DO!”
“Yes sir!”
Yu raised her hand. “Uh- Jamil, you said those curtains were super expensive, right?”
“Yes, but we have bigger problems on our…” He paused his sarcastic remark, following her gaze. “Perhaps…?”
Azul and Ace followed suit.
“That’s not a bad idea,” Azul commented. “But are those even an option?”
“There’s not much of a choice right now,” Yu responded.
“I have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about,” Ace said. “What is it about those stupidly shiny curtains? We have a missing tiara problem to solve!”
“Will you spuds-!” Vil turned to point at them before stopping. “The curtains?”
Yu pointed towards the hanging drapes, slightly shifting from the pacing employees. “It goes well with purple, don’t you think?”
Vil’s eyes immediately lit up. “Indeed it does! Manager!”
“Yes!” The manager ordered some employees to take down the curtains. “We will get to work right away!”
They all let out a heavy sigh as Vil moved to guide the Luxe employees to finishing his outfit.
“Good thinking,” Azul complimented, letting out a heavy sigh. “That was almost a disaster. Imagine what a breach of contract that would have been…”
Yu hummed. “I’ve always had to think quick on my feet.”
Besides, Vil looked really panicked despite his strong facade. Although he was the professional here, Yu was the adult. Seeing a teenager having to hold himself to such a high standard was too bothersome for her to leave alone. The added panic from the store’s employees wasn’t helping the mood at all.
“Still, the curtains. Huh?” Ace glanced at the now-exposed changing room. “You have a surprisingly good taste in fashion.”
She snorted. “I can dress up if I need to, but a sweatshirt and some sweats are so much easier to deal with.”
Look- She’s had odd jobs. It was a very desperate time in her life, but formal wear was a skill she was willing to learn if it meant she could earn more than her other minimum wage part-time jobs. Rich people tended to think the better you dressed the more you should get paid, apparently.
Eric stepped into the shop, giving them a wave. “Is Vil not done yet?”
At that moment, Vil stepped out, his outfit now decorated with the sparkling drapes. “Eric. Perfect timing. Shall we go?”
“You…” They all tensed. Did he notice…? “You look beautiful. Truly the fairest of them all!”
Vil huffed. “Of course I am. I’m the Vil Schoenheit.”
“Indeed.” He chuckled. “Indeed you are.”
Yu leaned closer to the infamous actor, holding up her hand to pretend to whisper to Vil’s father. “So… Are you proud of him?”
Vil flushed. “Prefect-!”
“Of course I am,” Eric said with a soft smile. “I have always been proud of my son, and I will never stop admiring his tenacity.”
The son in question cleared his throat. “Let us depart. We are going to be late.”
Yu smiled, giving Eric a thumbs up. Progress!
====================
The red carpet event was a blur in her mind, but it seemed to go well enough. To be honest, her hands were starting to cramp with how many pictures she had to take. It seemed she wasn’t alone, though, with her fellow classmates sprawled next to her in their break room. Only Vil seemed unaffected by the whole thing. Unfair.
Yu grimaced as an arm flopped on top of her. “Ace. Get off.”
He groaned. “I’m tired! Let me have this!”
“If you don’t get your stupid arm off of my chest I will-”
“Can you guys shut up?” Jamil scowled. “My vision’s still spotty from all the flashes.”
Vil let out a laugh. “Thank you. All of you. You all did a good job. Because of you, I was able to shine even more brilliantly.”
“It was an honor,” Azul said, puffing out his chest. “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that shall not go to waste.”
Jamil nodded. “We owe you for letting us participate in the first place.”
It was at this moment Yu finally kicked Ace off of the couch and Eric Venue opened the door.
Oops?
Eric just chuckled. “A perfect performance today. The promotion’s a huge success! Thank you, Vil.”
He smiled. “You’re welcome, but the thanks belongs to you for giving me this job in the first place.”
He shook his head. “There was no doubt in my mind that you were the perfect candidate for this role. I…” He glanced at Yu, who only shrugged. “I have a request as an industry insider, not as your father. Once you are done with school, won’t you let me produce your first feature film?”
Vil’s smile softened to the most genuine one of the trip. “Then, as an industry insider… Only if your terms are acceptable.”
Eric let out a loud laugh. “Of course! Now, the rest of you deserve my thanks as well. Feel free to enjoy the festival.”
“Oh, yeah!” Ace shot up from the floor. “Time to finally have some fun!”
Jamil smiled. “It’s about time for the Beautiful Queen remake, is it not?”
Vil nodded. “Shall we head over to the screening, then?”
They all got up to relocate before Eric grabbed Yu by the shoulder.
“May we… chat for a brief moment?” he asked.
Yu nodded, shooing along her friends. “Yeah, that’s fine. I’ll catch up with you guys later.”
The door shut as they left, Vil leaving with a final raised eyebrow that meant she would probably be interrogated later.
Eric grabbed her hands. “As his father… Thank you. For everything. If there’s anything you need, don’t hesitate to reach out.”
She shook her head. “It really wasn’t much.”
“No.” His expression fell. “I know I haven’t been the best father, but seeing him interact with his peers in such a carefree manner… I found myself wondering if I made the right choice in pushing him to pursue this career.”
She scrunched her eyebrows. “Does it seem like he doesn’t enjoy this?”
“Well, no. But…
“Then that’s that.” She shook her head. “Vil’s a straightforward person. If there’s something he doesn’t like, he wouldn’t hesitate to speak his mind.”
“...It seems I still have some learning to do, huh?”
“The way he interacts with his dormmates and his club…” She squeezed his hands. “It seems like there’s a good role model in his life that he wants to become like. I wouldn’t disregard all of your efforts so far, but now that you’re both older, it might be time to reconnect as father and son, not just as fellow professionals.”
“I will keep that in mind,” he chuckled, a little sheepishly. “Has anyone told you that you have a way with words?”
She raised an eyebrow. “As a matter of fact, your son did this morning. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
===========================
A few weeks later, Yu called for the five of them to meet again.
“DId you seriously have to pull us from practice for this?” Ace complained. “We were just about to scrimmage!”
She placed a cap on his head. “None of you guys are ever free. It’s honestly pretty annoying.”
“Hey-!” He yanked the hat off his head. “This… Huh? This is actually pretty sick! Where’d you get it?”
A cap landed on the others as well. “It’s thanks for the gifts from the studio tour.”
Each cap was designed after their respective dorm, Ro leading as head designer. She was more than willing to assist, especially since she spent a lot of time on Earth designing fan merch for the boys.
Azul looked at it with great interest. “Quite a detailed design. It must have been quite pricy for a custom-made gift.”
She shrugged. “I just pulled from my reserves I had with Sam. It’s not like I was going to use the money on anything else but food, anyways.”
“It wasn’t necessary, but I appreciate the gesture,” Jamil commented, a hidden joy twinkling in his eyes. “I’ll be sure to pay you back-”
“No.” Yu interrupted. “This is paying you back. Don’t start this with me. I will find a way to get back at you, even if I have to go to Kalim.”
He grumbled something under his breath, but she couldn't quite understand it.
Vil readjusted the cap so his hair was not as disheveled. “Well, now I’m the one who owes you, yes? Mine was originally a thank you gift, afterall.”
Yu paused. Shit. “Uh- Tell your dad to stop texting me past midnight? I have tasks to procrastinate and gargoyles to admire. You know- the usual. That’ll be enough.”
He blinked. “What?”
She sighed, crossing her arms. “He keeps asking me questions about NRC and what’s been going on. I swear— It’s like you two still aren’t talking!”
“We are,” he emphasized. “Every second Tuesday, as a matter of fact. I will… have a word with him.”
The non-Pomefiore students glanced at each other, wishing a silent prayer for Vil’s father.
Well. It’s out of her hands now! Good luck, Mr. Venue!

After a full night’s rest, Yu was ready to confront Vil.
Well. It was more like five hours, but that was enough to keep her on her feet. Probably.
She knocked on his door, hoping that he was already up.
“Come in,” Vil’s voice sounded from behind the door. “Oh, Prefect? Is something the matter?”
Not with her, no. “Just wanted to let you know I’m willing to lend an ear. For anything, really.”
He raised an eyebrow. “As you have told me plenty of times. What spurred the reminder this time?”
“It’s…” How to phrase it… “Your relationship with your father seemed… strained? Sorry if I’m meddling too much.”
He lingered on her face for a moment before returning to his skincare routine. “It is of no consequence. I am aware of how we may appear, but he is not a terrible father.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have been a better father.” Yu took a seat on his bed. “It’s not a sin to expect more out of him.”
His fingers clenched the brush he was using to apply his makeup. “And what of it?”
“Just thinking,” Yu hummed. “I mean- He made all this effort to meet us and ask about you. Can’t you do the same?”
“...Elaborate.”
“You can try calling him more, for one.” She flopped back onto the bed, bouncing a little on impact. “He’s quite the proactive texter.”
Vil grimaced. “Why were you texting my father at such a late hour?”
She rolled her eyes. “He was the one bombarding me with questions. I’m pretty sure he’s just lonely. With how many people that approach him with hidden intentions, don’t you think it’s hard to open up to anyone in the industry? You’d know best, wouldn’t you?”
He put the finishing touches on his face, spraying on some setting spray. “I will keep that in mind. Now— Let us depart before we are late.”
Whatever. She got up with a stretch, tidying up her fancy clothes that got a bit messed up when she decided to lie down. Look- These beds were comfy! How could she resist?
Vil paused at the doorway, causing her to stop.
“Thank you,” he said, not turning around. “Truly. My father is a good father, but I will admit my childhood was far from perfect.”
“No one’s is.” Definitely not hers.
He smiled. “You seem to have quite the way with words.”
She shrugged. “Comes with experience. I’ve seen lots of kids with similar looks on their faces. Now let’s go before we’re actually late. I don’t want Ace having one up on me.”
He scoffed. “We will never be later than that spud.”
They were actually the first ones to arrive at the predetermined meeting spot. Yu never really liked being late, but being a whole thirty minutes early was a bit much, in her opinion.
Ace and Grim arrived last, as expected, so she guessed there wasn’t really a need for her complaints.
“Did you sleep well?” Jamil asked.
“Of course,” Vil replied, going into detail about his complex bodycare routine.
The rest of them stayed silent.
“...I take it none of you did that?”
“I did some of that,” Azul muttered.
Jamil looked away.
Ace shrugged. “Yeah, no. I just took off my makeup and went to sleep.”
“If I said yes would you believe me?” Yu questioned.
“Absolutely not.”
She shrugged. “Well, I tried.”
He looked at me in disgust. “It is a wonder your skin is as good as it is given how little you take care of yourself.”
“Not the first time I’ve heard it,” she replied, feeling no worse about her daily routines. And by daily routines, she meant whatever came her way in the middle of the night that led to an average bed time of 3 AM.
He huffed. “Lack of self-care aside, let us depart for our next location.”
The Queen’s Film Studios was very much a stereotypical movie studio. Though, to be fair, Yu didn’t really know what a film studio was supposed to look like in the first place. Perhaps its on-screen depictions are actually true to nature. Posters decorated the walls surrounding them on their way to the front office, showcasing unfamiliar iconography and color splotches that tickled a distant memory in her mind. She wondered if she should actually start watching some films in her free time to compare them with Earth’s fairy tales.
The staff member that led their tour was a line producer of the upcoming Beautiful Queen remake who had grown her administrative career along with Vil’s acting one. After Azul’s ten minute analysis of the NDA, they were on their way. It reminded her of Universal’s studio tour, but everything was so Disney-themed it was starting to mess with her brain. Their first stop was the animation studio. The interior was quite dim, but lines of desks showcased animators hard at work.
A huge camera caught her attention.
The staff member noticed. “Ah, that camera was for our cel animations. It was used for the original animated Beautiful Queen.”
Yu nodded. Like Snow White.
Vil blinked. “You know what cel animation is?”
Ace scratched his head. “Isn’t that how they used to make animated movies? Like one of those flipbooks?”
“It’s similar,” Yu hummed. “It gets a lot more technical than that, but it uses layered celluloid sheets, right?”
One of her students had a fascination with old Disney motion pictures and went into great detail of how they worked and why it was so impressive for its time, which was a good show of curiosity and discovery.
Except that essay was supposed to be an analysis of one of the three literary books they read that school year. A shame she had to make them redo it.
“Since all of our animations are done digitally now, this camera is no longer in use,” the staff member explained. “But, it’s still kept here as an important artifact of our company’s history.”
After a brief break to observe the employees at work, they transitioned to the live action studio. Looming above them stood a castle very reminiscent of the ones she’s seen depicted in the center of Disneyland.
“Hey, You!” Ace drew her attention to a nearby set. “It’s a jail set! You wanna take a step inside to see what it’ll feel like?”
She raised an eyebrow. “Out of the two of us, I don’t think I’m the one that needs to worry about being put in the slammer.”
“Perhaps the two of you should join hands and experience it together,” Jamil said, smirking. “You lot are always causing trouble, anyways.”
The abso-fucking-lute gall of these teenagers!
Yu gestured to the three overblotters. “And who’re the ones who almost took half the school with them? Hah?”
“There’s also a forest and mine set created for the film,” the tour guide explained.
Vil nodded. “We have a very capable art department. It’s a shame we have to tear them down once their use has been fulfilled.”
They made some quick stops at the theater, Legend Plaza, and—finally— the studio store. It was fascinating seeing the history of a world she was foreign to, seeing a similarity of cultures.
“Ooh! Souvenirs!” Ace exclaimed as they entered the store.
“Ooh.” Yu raised a weak fist, expression deadpan. “Souvenirs. Great.”
The bane of existence for any amusement park visitor. There was no way in hell she would have any money to buy anything, nor did she care to get anything. This wasn’t her childhood. It wasn’t her nostalgia, no matter how similar the characters were to her world’s classics.
It was just… not the same.
Surprisingly, they had goods for the Queen of Hearts, the Sea Witch, and even a few general studio memorabilia.
Vil dropped a crown keychain in her hands. “Here.”
Yu held it up, admiring how it dazzled as it languidly spun around the chain. It was slightly smaller than her palm, the yellow crown adorned with purple jewels.
“It looks pretty,” she commented, starting to hand it back. “But I can’t-”
“Take it.” He closed her hand around it. “It’s a gift. For this morning.”
She stared at her hand. “...Thanks.”
She felt a bit guilty since she didn’t really do anything, but she felt like he would somehow sneak it into her bags the moment she let her guard down. Better to just accept it now and ignore the price sticker on the back then go through the fuss of having to fight with the Pomefiore housewarden.
Ace walked past, dropping a cap on her head. “Take this too! I got matching caps for us and Juice! Can you believe there’s a discount if you buy four of ‘em?”
“Uh-”
“Are we all getting the Prefect something?” Axul commented, walking over. “If so, I think one of these kelp hairpins will suit you. I’m sure Floyd will be overjoyed to match with you.”
Another item was dropped in her hand. Great. Now she was really starting to feel bad. “Guys, I really don’t need this-”
Jamil placed a stack of DVDs in her hands. “These are some recommendations you can watch in your free time. I’m sure Kalim wouldn’t mind the extra expense.”
Yu groaned. “Don’t do this to me! I really don’t want anything!”
Vil huffed. “Just take it. Would you dare embarrass us by turning our generosity away?”
She totally would if it meant she didn’t have to bear this type of burden. She never minded free stuff, but the fact that this was her friends buying her souvenirs with their own money…
She’s gonna have to brainstorm a return gift and call Sam stat.
As they stepped out of the store with goodies in hand (much to Yu’s dismay), the staff member was still there, holding her phone in her hand.
“Before you go, would you spare some time for a picture?” they asked with a smile.
Vil smiled back. “As long as it’s not for Magicam, go ahead.”
They laughed. “No, of course not! Eric requested a picture to commemorate your visit. He thought it would be good for future promotions.”
He nodded. “Go right ahead, then.”
Yu looked at Azul and Jamil, who looked back at her, all of them having the same thought.

After finishing up the final plans for their makeup, the sun had begun to set.
“Oh dear…” Vil elegantly looked at his watch. “We’ve taken a bit too much time. It’s about time to have dinner with the film producer.”
Grim perked up at the word “dinner.”
“Man,” Ace sighed. “Bet it’s a real fancy place, huh?”
Azul hummed. “Shall we find a place to eat in the meantime?”
“It’s about right for dinner time,” Jamil commented. “I saw a bistro a few ways back that looked intriguing.”
Vil just raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about? You’re coming with me. The producer would like to meet you all.”
Yu squinted. She was on the same track with everyone else, but that sentence seemed… weird. Usually, Vil didn’t want potatoes to interfere with his work life; why would he want them to meet his producer all of a sudden?
“Why would he want to meet us?” Jamil voiced with suspicion laced in every word.
Azul brought a fist to his chin. “The crew for the Beautiful Queen is not publicized yet, so who could this producer be…?”
Holy shit. How behind the scenes are they?! The producer hasn’t even been announced yet???
Jamil rested his hands on his waist. “Then, I suppose we should just go and see.”
Ace chuckled. “Maybe this can be my big break! Hello, stardom!”
Yu snorted. “You can’t even hide unfinished homework from Riddle. Tough luck, buddy.”
“Wha-?! Like you’re any better!”
Yu never thought she would be able to finely dine in a fine dining restaurant— let alone with this group of kids she was half-chaperoning. But after a not-so-quick journey to the dining establishment, they were seated in an instant.
Grim stared up at the ceiling. “Woah… This place is huge! Everything is so… shiny!”
Yu stroked his head. “Fancy places tend to be shinier than most. Take it in while you can.”
While there was no Michelin star, she could tell this place was of the same category. Just a quick peek at neighboring tables showed why someone like Vil would eat at a place like this.
“Look at those giant chandeliers!” Ace’s mouth was agape. “This really is a high-end place, huh?”
Yu patted his shoulder in fake condolence. “Don’t worry, these won’t fall on us. It might be a bit traumatic, but-”
He whacked her on the back of her head. Ow.
“You’re awfully quiet considering where we are,” Jamil commented, glancing over at Azul. “A bit awestruck, huh?”
The octopus in question adjusted his glasses. “I was just observing the ambiance. The staff, the decorations, the music…”
“Scoping out the competition.” Yu nodded. “Who knows when we’ll be able to experience something like this again?”
Never, probably.
“Still, a real film producer…” Azul brought his attention back to the group, seemingly done with his observations. “I wonder what kind of person he’ll be.”
“He must be an impressive one, seeing how Vil seems to trust him,” Jamil responded.
At that moment, a man in a deep purple suit arrived at the table, his blonde hair parted to one side. Yu tilted her head. This man looked… familiar?
Beside her, the other three guests gaped. “Eric Venue?!”
Yu blinked. “Who?”
“Only one of the most famous actors in the world!” Azul looked at her, offended. “He’s the star of countless blockbusters!”
Okay, that was uncalled for. When would she have had time to watch these so-called blockbusters with housewardens overblotting left and right?! She barely had enough time to watch movies back on Earth. There would be way too much to catch up on if she wanted to watch all the classics here. She bet if she mentioned Steven Spielberg or Margot Robbie they’d be as lost as she felt. Take that!
Vil cleared his throat. “He’s in the film and producing it as well.”
“Really?!” Ace blinked. “Wow, I can’t believe he can act and produce…”
Jamil muttered under his breath, “He’s a bigger deal than I initially thought…”
The older man took a seat across from Vil, smiling at him. “Good to see you again. It’s been too long.”
The student actor just crossed his arms. “There must be others you need to meet with. Is sparing time to meet with your son the professional thing to do, Dad?”
He chucked. “There’s plenty of time for networking later. I may be a good actor and producer, but I should be a good father as well. Right, son?”
Grim looked between the two. “Huh? Dad? Son?”
Ohhhh. That was why he looked familiar.
“Yes, Eric is my father,” Vil sighed.
“Really?” Azul exclaimed. “I had no idea!”
Eric laughed. “Given that this isn’t public information, I would hope you don’t.”
His son just huffed, crossing his arms. “I want to stand on my own two feet without people accusing me of nepotism.”
“Guess that wasn’t the best avenue for you,” Yu absentmindedly commented, starting to zone out from overstimulation. She immediately covered her mouth the moment she processed the words that came out of her mouth. “Sorry!”
Vil grimaced. “Please do not. He makes enough of those jokes by himself already.”
Eric let out another laugh. “You have good friends, huh?”
“Speaking of…” Azul cleared his throat. “Won’t you introduce us properly?”
“You’re Vil’s school friends, right?”
“They’re not my school friends,” Vil huffed. “They’re spudlings number one through five.”
Yu shrugged. “Spudlings sound cuter than potatoes. Looks like we got an upgrade.”
“But they’re the same thing!” Ace retorted. “I don’t want to be a potato or a spudling!”
Vil ignored them. “They’re acting as my porters today.”
After a brief round of actual introductions, they continued with their small talk as they waited for the food to arrive. During this time, though, Yu couldn’t help but notice a conflict brewing at a different table.
“Sir, I apologize-”
“[You work here, yet you cannot understand me?! Bring your manager here!]”
Huh. French, huh? It was a fancy restaurant, but Yu didn’t expect it to be this bougie.
The berated employee looked more panicked by the minute.
Well, shit.
“[Sorry to bother you,]” she said as she approached the fuming man. “[What seems to be the issue?]”
“[Finally! Someone who can understand me!]” He whipped his head around so fast she was worried he got whiplash. “[I was just trying to recruit this young man into my modeling agency, but he keeps bowing his head!]”
Huh.
“I’m-” The employee let out a sob. “I don’t know what I did, but he keeps yelling at me! I don’t know how to fix this!”
Yu took a deep breath to calm herself. “He said he wanted to recruit you for his modeling agency.”
“...Eh?”
“[And you-]” She turned to address the misunderstood customer. “[Your raised voice caused him to think he wronged you. Did you not come with company that could help you communicate in Common?]”
He jumped, looking everywhere but her. “[I- Common is not something that can easily be learned!]”
“[...Really.]”
The three of them stayed silent at the flimsy excuse. Not knowing their homeland’s tongue, Yu could understand, but Common? Given what she’s learned about this world, that was very, very unlikely.
“Okay, okay!” The previously enraged man threw his hands up in frustration. “I was testing potential hire candidates, okay?! My boss wanted me to find people who had the looks and could speak Règle!”
“Huh?” The employee looked flustered. “Me? A candidate? For what?”
“Nothing!” He shot up from his seat, harshly grabbing his jacket. “I’m leaving this worthless establishment!”
“Sir-!”
He stomped out of the room, all eyes following him out.
“...He didn’t pay for his meal.” The employee scratched his cheek. “What am I supposed to do about that?”
“I will cover it,” Eric said as he placed a hand on Yu’s shoulder. When did he walk over here? “It’s quite unfortunate such an unsavory fellow treated you in such a manner.”
The waiter stammered, "O- Of course, Mr. Venue! Thank you for your generosity!”
“[So you know Règle?]” Eric commented as they made their way back to the table. “[I’ve been trying to get my son to learn, but he’s only had time to learn enough to be conversational.]”
Yu raised an eyebrow. “[That’s fluent enough, is it not? It’s quite the miracle he was able to learn a language that proficiently with such a packed schedule.]”
He chuckled, returning to his seat. “[Touché. He is quite the ambitious boy. It’s a shame he doesn’t allow himself to fully enjoy his school life, but I’m proud of who he’s become today.]”
“[I’m sure he’s enjoying it in his own way despite what he tells you,]” she commented, sitting down. “[He has one hell of a vice housewarden to take some of the load of off him.]”
“And what exactly are you two talking about behind our backs?” Vil asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Just asking for his number,” Yu responded, giving the teen a cheeky smile. “He’s single, right?”
Vil paled. “You will not-”
“Don’t you have a girlfriend?” Ace interjected, raising an eyebrow.
Yu blinked. You remembered that, huh?”
“You have a girlfriend?” Jamil asked, doubt in his expression.
Wow. Okay. “Yes, I do, as a matter of fact.” She paused. “Did.”
Azul hesitated a bit before speaking. “Is she not still alive? I thought she was just… back ‘home.’”
Oops?
She scratched the back of her neck. “Yeah, no. She passed away a long time ago.”
“My condolences…” Eric’s eyes softened. “It must have been a painful loss.”
Yu just shrugged. At this point, it really was all in the past, but it was nice hearing their sympathy for a woman they’ll never meet. She’s sure Lily would have loved them.
“Anyways-!” Yu cleared her throat. Where the fuck did this mood come from. “You wanted to hear more about Vil, yeah?”
“That would be wonderful,” Eric said. “What is he like at school?”
Uh.
The four non-actors glanced at each other.
“What’s wrong?” Vil raised an eyebrow. “Just speak what’s on your mind. I have nothing to hide.”
Alright then. Yu started first. “He’s real bossy-”
Jamil swiftly covered her mouth. “You can’t start with that!”
“It’s a defining characteristic!” she countered, a bit muffled from his hand. “It’s not like it’s a bad thing!”
She was a teacher. She definitely knew how effective being strict can be. While it’s never good to be too strict, a little harshness was necessary with some troublemakers.
“Despite his… strictness,” Jamil started. “He’s a well-respected housewarden and student. Many look up to him.”
Hearing all this, Eric just let out a chuckle. “Some things never change, huh? I’m glad to hear you’ve been able to adjust all right. You were often only with the housekeeper, so I was a bit worried.”
“You two didn’t live together?” Azul questioned out of curiosity.
“We were simply too busy,” Vil answered. “It was quite rare for us to be home at the same time. It made me quite appreciative of the time we were able to spend together.”
There was something… bitter in that statement, but Yu decided to leave it be. It wasn’t her job to get between a busy father-son duo.
The small talk continued all the way through dessert, and it was eventually time to part ways with the infamous film producer.
“Do you have work after this?” Vil asked his father as they all stepped out of the restaurant.
He nodded. “I’m meeting a big shot distributor to hammer out the flow for our test screening.”
Vil put a hand on his waist. “You should get some rest as soon as possible, then. I can’t have you standing next to me tomorrow with bags under your eyes.”
“I’ll try not to let you down, Mr. Schoenheit,” he replied, patting his son on the shoulder. “Farewell for now.”
As they watched his retreating back fade into the distance, Yu couldn’t help but notice Vil’s complicated expression. It really wasn’t her place, but she was starting to think she should at least lend him an ear about his relationship with his father, given that she has already entered his consciousness and all.
