I'm sick of "Insane Environmentalist" Villains.
But we just keep getting them, to normalize that whole "See, we shouldn't change too much, let the corporations make as much as they can before we do anything to actual help the species as a whole."
That Marvel is sacrificing characters for it, teen heroes no less, for Wolverine, is just appalling.
Currently, in Marvel Infinite comics X-Men Unlimited, is a two-faced mess. On one hand, it wants to show how bad the environment is being treated by humanity, showing Water Protectors as good people.
Then we have Nature Girl and her new 'hype-person' Curse killing people and sending hordes of animals on the workers and peons of these massive corporations and showing her as going over the deep end, heartless.
And slicing a man's throat with her horns with a simple turn of her head.
It's so disingenuous that it's similarly disgusting.
After Avengers: Infinity War, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Venom, Batman Begins, Kingsman, and so many others, it's time for this villain to be retired.
Poison Ivy has been reformed/shown as an Anti-Hero, but these big media companies pushing the "See, you can go too far" goes so far as to get people parroting that in The Washington Post.
The Mary Sue did several articles on this, one in 2018, another a year later, and we're STILL seeing this stock character come out.
Meanwhile, we have fiction where environmental destruction itself is the villain of the story. Marvel is behind the times with their new initiative.
And they are going to literarily burry* a young hero because of it.
There are some hope spots in the story so far, but having been monitoring how Marvel uses young heroes over the past decade has really not gotten my hopes up. She may get out of it (it's Wolverine and a teenage girl with dark hair, you know how this goes), but even if she gets out of this, we're getting a story that's so tired a cottage industry of articles pointing out how bad it is has cropped up!
And having thrown my own hat into the pile, we'll see how this all pans out in about a week.
*Krakoans who break the "Kill No Human" which both Nature Girl and Curse have done several times over are put in 'The Hole' and Sabertooth is just waiting for someone to join him. Think on that for a moment then feel free to vomit. I know I will.
