Hello new followers

So i had a post go a bit viral and net me some new followers. I can’t find the intro post I made a long time ago no matter what I do, so here goes.

I support BLM, Jewish people, Muslims, Native american sovereignty over their own lands, queer people, trans people, ace/aro people, fanfic (properly tagged, of course), adults in fandom (bitch i AM one), women’s reproductive rights and bodily autonomy, the right for all body types, colors, and abilities to exist without your harassment or need for justification,

and generally not being an asshole to other humans regardless of whether their specifics made this list.

I believe in deplatforming TERFs, nazis, and white supremacists. I only engage if I feel the audience to the conversation can be persuaded and only to the extent that I feel like dealing with their bullshit.

If you can’t get on board with this, please block me now. I won’t be upset, quite the contrary.

Oh and because I’ve seen this in my perusal of blogs that are interacting with me, I believe Ace/arospec peeps are part of LGBT(QIA2+) community bc that nomenclature is specifically about what kind of people they are attracted to and how it “deviates” from the “norm” and they face a lot of discrimination from cishets (like me, btw- in that i am cishet, not that I feel the need to discriminate) and they don’t need it from their own community so if you’re not down with that idea, kindly see yourself out.

Trans at nearly 49, celebrating 16 years now on HRT. The state of the world has made me double down this past year on things that bring me joy (clothing being one) and I've become far less self-conscious standing out because of it.

It was tempting to skip TDOV this year, to not have to deal with the surge of threats in my notes & inbox, to try to take a break from being highly visible in the way a target is visible.

But, it's important to persist and be there for my trans siblings who can't be visible or are otherwise feeling alone.

I still get weekly Asks from young folks amazed that growing old is a possibility for people like us. These messages break you a little, but it's a burden I'm happy to bear. <3

My grandma just called and, among other things, said “You have hips. That’s good! Men like hips!” and then she interrupted herself to say “Women like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never remember” And I was like “Thanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.” and she was like “Okay, no one will comment on your hips!” very self satisfied, like “aha, I have figured it out” I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she can’t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like “she’s a little confused, but she’s got the spirit!”

I’m glad so many people have discovered Judith “Judy” Heumann through this silly little gif set. I am sorry to say she has died at the age of 75. She was known as the mother of disability rights. In 1970 she sued the Board of Education to become a licensed teacher and she won. In 1977 she was one of the organizers of the 504 Sit-in, a 24 day protest for disability rights. You can learn more about her story from her book Being Heumann, the picture book Fighting for YES! or the documentary Crip Camp.

Judy Heumann believed in the inherent value of each disabled individual and would never back down on what she thought was right. Her friends and fellow activists remember her as a strong leader.

The thing i dont think outsiders are grasping about the impact of typhoon Halong is that Alaska still has seasons with non negotiable constraints on what is physically possible to achieve.

All our politicians are being very particular about calling evacuees "refugees not homeless" (because no one hates homeless people quite like Alaska) but the reality is that it is mid October and money and willpower doesn't actually rewrite the weather. Let's pretend for a second we have a sympathetic and functional government, that can dump infinite manpower and resources onto a problem that affects a tiny batch of people at the far ends of the earth.

There are no roads. The last fuel barge for the year left and you couldn't get another one out there even if it was already on its way. Heavy equipment and the fuel to run it that's not already there will need to be airlifted out to the villages. Luckily, Alaska is the land of batshit insane pilots who will put a plane down on any surface that looks vaguely flatish, so we can do that but the major issue is the impending freeze up.

If you live somewhere without the kind of winter that we have, it's difficult to even wrap your head around the concept. The ground will freeze, the water will freeze and all the flood damages will essentially become immovable bits of landscape until break up, at which point everything will crumble and rot. Freeze up is maybe 2 weeks out, 3 if we're lucky, but it wouldn't be unheard of if it happened by next weekend now that the low pressure system moved out. The ability to dry things out in that window will dictate what's still standing by spring.

Recovery will be limited to whatever can be achieved in the next few days,and even under the absolute best circumstances that isn't a lot. Rebuilding efforts can only start in spring, and all the issues

As of an hour ago Trump signed 25 million in Federal aide despite the government shut down. FEMA somehow hasn't updated declarations to reflect that, but hey, the government is shut down, give them a minute or so. The entire congressional delegation is begging for a state of emergency and as of yet there's no change there.

Dunleavy is asking for 100% funding for the next 90 days, which is... that puts us into January. As far as rebuilding goes, that's not helpful. See ya in 8 months.

A few years ago while trying to find ways to commit suicide as painlessly as possible, I came across a PDF of Dr. Paul Quinnett's The Forever Decision. Thinking it might go into actual methods of suicide (I read an article once that actually did that and was trying to find it again) I started to read it, and I think I only got about two pages in before I was crying too much to actually see the words.

I downloaded the PDF to my hard drive and I open it again whenever I'm feeling too suicidal to do much else, but not enough to start booking a ride to the hospital. And every time without fail I only go up to a few pages before backing off and choosing to live another day just because suicide suddenly seems even more unbearable than whatever the hell upset me in the first place.

All the book really does is [I'm pulling a summary from GoodReads here as, again, I've read no more than 5 pages] "discusses the social aspects of suicide, the right to die, anger, loneliness, depression, stress, hopelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, the consequences of a suicide attempt, and how to get help."

But it also starts with the author kindly asking the reader to complete the book before going through with anything, and for some reason I'm compelled to really just try to read it all before finalizing everything. Despite not yet completing it (hopefully never will) I think I can safely say it's saved my life at least a few times now.

It's intentionally legal to copy and redistribute this book to keep it as accessible as possible, and it's very easy to find, but here's a link for it anyways.

So what do you do? To help the patient is to accept that you must also harm them.

You're a good doctor. Of course you remove the leg and save the patient's life, because trying to exercise a choice that will result in no harm is impossible where there are only two bad outcomes, but one is unquestionably worse.
