"sibling's problems"
A/N: hihi! this is my first post and fanfic. english's not my first language but i hope you enjoy it regardless!
warnings: fluff, slight angst, hurt/comfort, wholesome, found family, no mention of y/n
rudo doesn’t remember when was the last time he felt loved.
you were a stranger.
from time to time he started to ponder if his birth was a mistake. his biological father was a bad person, a killer some would say. was it right to blame an innocent child into thinking his blood was corrupted? was it right to blame someone for being born?
these were the thoughts that invaded rudo’s head since regto took him under his wing. regto was certainly a funny person—kind, undoubtedly—and always made sure rudo was safe from harm.
when his father was brutally stabbed in the gut by an unknown masked guy—a creepy one, one might add—his tiny flame had been brutally ripped off. his once, crimson deep-red shined eyes, were now a duller colour. he had lost his parental figure and was then accused of murdering him not long after.
the indescribable rage that boiled inside of him was unbearable.
they dropped the white-haired child away as if he were another piece of junk, like they commonly do without any care.
when rudo joined the cleaners his first thought was ‘how do i behave?’. he was awkward and talked little initially. what surprised him the most was that these people—from the pit—were unexpectedly welcoming. when the smaller boy snapped rudely at one of enjin’s knacks, the blonde simply shrugged and took a long drag of nicotine. zanka rolled his eyes so hard that rudo thought they’d get stuck back there and mumbled something about his “ungrateful ass”; while riyo swept a stray lock away from her face and casually set her hand on her hip, not sensing any offence from him.
after one month and a half of meeting the team, he got to know you.
you were another member of the cleaners and also a giver like him. rudo saw you a couple times actually, but never really gave it much thought as he was busy stuffing his nose in sweets and pastries.
your first meeting happened on a random morning when you talked to him first.
you were chatting with riyo and tomme, gesturing animatedly with your hands to make more emphasis. “he then completely forgot i was on patrol the night before and straight up put me on a mission the morning after. i haven’t eaten since yesterday!” riyo snorted loudly. “you sure you haven't dreamt that? where you high last night!?” “the fuck?! ‘course not, riyo! what’re you spouting?!” tomme held back a cackle. “don’t rail her too much, riyo. she just came back, let her relax a bit.” she handed you a cup of steaming tea. you sigh in pleasure as you place your cold hands around the hot white mug. blowing softly, you raise your head to glance around the cafeteria. the once empty, sleepy room filled with hushed whispers of early birds developed into a bustling and lively atmosphere.
a swirling mass of people walked in the cafeteria overcrowding the space with high-pitched chatter. half of the room was packed like sardines, high on energy and warm smiles; the other was still sleeping, with heads dangling up and down in an almost captivating manner.
scanning the room once more you spot a familiar face. a certain white-haired kid with black tips and deep-ruby eyes.
his posture was stiff and rigid, shoulders too tense and jaw too tight. he wasn’t the same casual, chill person you saw yesterday evening. sure, he wasn't exactly the type of person to start a conversation early in the day, but something must've troubled him a lot if even enjin didn’t try to proceed towards him.
with your cheek planted in your palm, you gazed at him with a concerned, frowning look. rudo’s eyebrows were drawn together in tension.
‘poor kid, all alone in a place you aren’t familiar with…’ feeling bad for him, you master some of your courage approaching him noiselessly.
…
rudo’s mind was elsewhere. he was still thinking about last night's nightmares about the apostles and regto. he can’t get out of it it seems. the boy dragged a worn-out, gloved-hand across his face in an attempt to sweep away the remaining bits of fatigue. while doing so, he failed to notice your figure moving closer.
“hey, rudo right? you doing alright? ‘saw you back there and looked like you were fainting anytime soon.” you sat near him as your worried eyes searched his face. “...uh, ye-yeah. thanks. just thinking a bit.” you watched him silently, forehead creased with worry. suddenly, a lightbulb lit up in your head recalling zanka commenting regarding his recently-developed sweet-tooth. “hold on, i think i have something to make you feel better!” you hum cheerfully. you pull out from your pocket a loud and crinkly silver-wrapped candy. the wrapper had an intricate design with gold and white motifs; the material was flexible and thin, enough to secure and mold the shape of the small dessert.
you handed him the sweet slowly, and he accepted it unraveling the plastic in a curious way. it revealed a tiny piece of caramel coated in a thick layer of white chocolate. it smelled really good. as if sensing your excitement he plopped the sweet in his mouth. chewing leisurely, his eyes widened in surprise as an explosion of flavours relished on his taste buds. his crimson orbs enlarged in astonishment; “whoa, thwis is too gwood! do you have anytwin’ else?!” his greed about sweets made you sneer loudly. he then blushed profusely, thinking he overstepped his luck even though he almost devoured the sweet along the wrapper. relief washed you over seeing him eased up again.
and that’s how your fellow friendship started to bloom.
————————————————————————
you can’t recall how many times you and rudo interacted, but you were sure that a tiny parental bond sparked between you two.
you wouldn't call it a mother-son-like bond; more like a older-sister-younger-brother vow. you bickered like siblings with a noticeable gap of years, stole each other's food and cared mutually for one's self. gris once teased you mistaking you for his mother for how protective you’ve been around rudo. august cried at full volume how adorable you two were whilst eishia hushed him down shyly. enjin tried to nonchalantly pass one morning by the medical room, eyes softening on the scene while you were scolding the kid to be more careful around trash beasts.
in any case, you and rudo were attached at the hip.
but even if you were his cool and sweet older sister, he couldn't tell you what was under his gloves. even so, you didn’t push him further. you respected his boundaries and simply knew the right time would've come to let you know everything.
…
tonight the silvery presence high in the clouds was beautiful like usual. your evening was perfect: your covers were warm, your pyjamas hugged your frame snuggly and you were more than happy to enter the dreamland. exhaustion creeped on your body and you exhaled in pleasure as you wriggle under your blankets. with one arm draped on your face, you start to ponder… i wonder if rudo’s okay. he pushed himself over the edge today. he’s so damn stubborn. you grimace.
suddenly a deafeningly roar echoed near your dorm shattering abruptly your thoughts. what the hell was that noise?! speak of the devil… you shot up from your bed and make your way to the door. twisting the handle you peek around the hall nervously.
everything seemed like the norm, except that rudo’s door was slightly ajar and you could spot the lights on. worried but also intrigued you proceed towards his room. pushing the wooden door open you were greeted with a smaller figure crouched on the pavement. “rudo, hey, what’s wrong? are you hurt? lemme see.” your honeyed voice called softly his name. he hated being seen vulnerable but with you he could let it slide, especially since you now know his ‘secret’; dark, deep-red skin painted his hands and forearms in a rough pattern that seemed painful to manage. you gasped inaudibly and hurried near him, cradling his scarred hands and moving him forward the bathroom. “don’t… don’t worry ‘bout me. i’ve been dealing with my hands since i was born, you don’t have to dwell on it…” he flinched when you poured freezing, cold water on them. you faced him. “don’t start with your whole inner dialogue regarding how disgusting you think you are. you know i don’t care if you’re different than the others and i love you just the same. please, let me take care of you. you’ve been through a lot, ru.” you finish with eyes glistening. the bathroom was filled with a pregnant pause, as if he was reflecting on your speech.
you eventually wrapped his hands in bandages like he told you to do and brought him near his bed frame.
you hold his face. “ru, i’m not mad at you. i’m not furious about you hiding me your hands.” you murmur. “we faced a lot together. i know you miss your father every day and i can’t possibly replace his spot, but—” his large eyes found yours. “—we can build a lifetime of memories, side by side. you can discard those ugly, bitter feelings of the past and start anew.” rudo’s cheeks were pink and warm; not from embarrassment, but from the way you sneaked into his stoned and locked heart. he didn’t understand how you were patient with him. he didn't know why he started to feel protective towards you: you felt safe. you smelled like home to him and it made him anxious, because the last time he felt loved it went downhill.
he believed for ages that his existence was cursed; his fate was too. the only difference was that right here, and right now, you were with him. by his side.
“sorry. ‘m sorry for not telling you sooner. it’s—it’s just i was scared to see your reaction. i know. it’s foolish. but without the gloves, i am nothing. exposed. devoid of my past…” rudo sighed shakily. “just… i just wanted to thank you. you’ve always been there for me and i couldn't be more grateful.” he faces you this time. tears prickled at your eyes. “i never thought that i’d be thankful for those slums to throw me down here. if that were the case, i would've never met you, big sis.”
those last two letters made you broke down and engulfed him in a fierce, desperate embrace. you hugged him tightly, as if of being scared he will vanish. “rudo…” you cried out. he immediately returned your hug huffing waveringly. acts of affections weren't his forte and would often cringe during it; but what he didn’t realise sooner was that he desperately yearned for it. his stubborn and cold facade shattered and weakly shifted his weight on your chest.
after a while you started to caress his white, scruffy hair, untangling a few locks. “you mean a lot to me too, you bonehead. next time you have to do this, just come asking for my help. it’ll be easier to get it done together, don’t you think?” you broke the tension.
rudo was still clinging to your shirt with no intention of backing off. “alright kid, enough with this emotional drama.” you crack a grin. “let’s tuck you in. if zanka discovers we overslept he’s gonna whoop our asses with his ‘lovely staff’ or somethin’” rudo doesn’t complain this time and makes himself comfortable in the bed. you were so exhausted that the next thing you know, your eyes flutters and you’re out cold.
…
“where in the absolute hell are those two gremlins?! it’s 10 AM sharp in the morning and they’re nowhere to be seen!” the double split haired teenager was literally ripping his hair out from exasperation; in the meantime you and rudo were sneaking off in the kitchen to grab some sweets, cackling like little kids.
