In researching for my term paper on 1984, I read that Jim Jones, who led a massive cult in the 70s, used "mind-control techniques" from the book to lead his followers. Looking more into it I found an audiotape record of the day he lead 900 people in committing suicide. Its one of the eeriest things I've ever come across.
