izzy’s little “i have to okay? i love you, i love you so much” to moody oh my god that hurt my heart so bad. the first time we really see love and affection between any of the richardson kids and it’s such a gut wrenching fleeting moment. the way he begged her to stay and the pain in both their voices, i’m a fuckin wreck

The Goldfinch & The Hero Patent

I can’t believe I didn’t realize this till now but The Goldfinch is your classic story of the child hero but told in an absolutely, brutally honest fashion. Not only are there constant, quiet allusions to childhood & fairy-tale throughout the book ex. mention of things like fairy-lights, the Russian lullaby Boris sings, Theo’s literal nickname is Potter (there’s hundreds of examples). But Theo also fulfills every level of the Hero Patent (hero needs to be taken away from state of innocence and place of origins, experiences physical journey, the results of the revelation) and the Hero’s Rites of Passage (separation, isolation,illumination,discovery,result of discovery) and the Hero’s Journey:

#1. Mystery Birth/Origins where the hero’s past defines them as someone different that triggers their later journey (losing mother, the explosion, stealing the painting)

#2 Transition where the hero is given faithful companions (Boris, Popper), education through the wise tutor/mentor/father figure (Hobie), Descent to the spiritual/physical underworld (Vegas, Theo’s depression), finally there’s a catch where there’s a battle at the end (Amsterdam).

#3 Get Rid of the Hero Somehow where the hero comes back with a gift for man kind (the paintings) and leaves wherever the action/land of where the story took place (Theo’s in-between state roaming from hotel to hotel I won’t give spoilers by describing more)

Tartt took the classic design of the child hero and molded it to her design. The Goldfinch almost acts like a messed up fairytale the way Theo’s perception of reality is so screwed and the spaces between dream, nightmare and reality intertwine so tightly.
