-My fandoms swap drastically which is why I’m NOT UPDATING OLD PIN all you need to know is all my interests share one thing in common: being niche as shit and having robots in them, and if not then it’s a rare exception lol. My interests change at random especially when I sometimes take forever to consume shit. I mainly watch anime to consume my robot fix despite how limited it is, I need to work on reading more in general and my favorite genre of videos games are platformers and Metroidvanias. it's very frustrating seeing otherwise well-structured posts about media literacy and critical thinking bookended with statements about "nowadays", "nobody has literacy anymore", "this generation is so anti-intellectual", and the like, unquestioningly falling into better past fallacies.

Do we really think the 80s and its Satanic Panic were better at critical thinking? what about the 40s? the Victorian era? societies have always had problems with critical thinking and literacy, because most societies have dealt with propaganda, corrupt leadership, difficulty providing education (due to poverty or discrimination or other issues), and/or people who resist critical thinking (due to privilege or circumstance or what have you). we can criticize media trends without pulling a "well back in the GOOD OLD DAYS" about it.

I took awhile but trying to finally watch the god wars arc of CS and it’s one of those “I don’t entirely hate this but also what the fuck is happening” as guy who doesn’t get confused by old anime bullshit anymore as I consumed so much bullshit yet I don’t know what gets me more

Them randomly inserting Ishinomori in here with this being the second time I saw some shit like this (a more recent rider x sentai crossover did this) or the fact the final ep is lost media, like no actually I cannot find it on pirate sites, I checked EVERYWHERE as I have a pirate site list website linked in case of backups, so my watch of this is unfinished until I can find it but I gotta wonder if the final ep is- that fucking bad or something cause so far the eps I could find just been ??? at worst (but I’m only really watching for completion sake but I mean- I’m done otherwise)

Forgive me for another long special interest related post as I’m too lazy to go back to find the post where I vaguely mentioned this but it’s been on my mind again, after finishing 009 CS and also just having a brief chat with a oomf about it, that I really think about how while I can’t confirm if it happens often (it might just be a few people tbh) the comparisons between Imagawa and Kawagoe as directors as much of a interesting topic it is given how much mecha stuff they had their hands on, sometimes feels a bit unfair.

I feel a little crazy for looking into it but when you look at credits and see Imagawa almost always writes his stuff on top of being director, with the biggest exception being g Gundam (he did not write a single ep) and getter arma after ep 3 where kawagoe took over, and then see that kawagoe only ever credited as director, never writes stuff from what I could tell, he relies on other writers. That means while a director STILL has control of a story as they are the ones pushing their vision, when one is a director working with writers and the other is a director who for the most part, refuses to let others write for him, is truly what makes their final products differ.

Imagawa you are getting the same thing every time, even in G when he (didn’t) write his vision was clearly engraved into it, yet a constant is “making whacky adaptations of old mecha that have a lot of references either to the authors other works or shit he likes- also a lot of family drama as a core plot point” while Kawagoe you get his style of fast pacing but otherwise the quality varies based on how the adaptation is, you get faithful stuff like cyborg solider and getter arc but then you get “is this really even the original anymore?” with kotetsushin jeeg and Mazinkaiser skl for the fact they included new ocs rather then using the existing characters, even if to shin jeegs credit compared to SKL the og cast appears, they aren’t the focus. New getter also in a weird in between as simultaneously the most faithful anime before arc in terms of themes, but not really characters with how some were added or changed. You at least get something different out of Kawagoe, but all his ideas won’t hit depending on preferences especially when he switches up writers even if I checked and saw some are consistent.

I feel like both at most only share the fact they adapted mecha stuff and one happened to be getter arma which was a conjugated project between the two even if it wasn’t intended to turn out that way, both are clearly passionate fans in how they adapt things just in different ways, so I’m unsure if the comparison is entirely fair- especially as I caught myself being biased for kawagoe but not for imagawa, I don’t know sometimes to give kawagoe all the credit when imagawa has consistently wrote his stuff, and this is why I’m willing to give his stuff I haven’t finished or seen one more go, despite knowing I may not enjoy it, I’m trying so hard to understand his appeal now that I compared both of them.

the issue with growing up in the 2000s and 2010s was like there was this really big push toward "accepting your weirdness" overall but they meant like idk wearing mismatched socks or something not being tangibly beyond the norm in any way shape or form

Wait wait wait, sooo I just realized that the track 愛の夢, "Ai no Yume," which means Dreams of Love, from Getter Robo Armageddon is essentially just an orchestral arrangement of Liebestraum ("Dreams of Love" in Hungarian) No. 3 by Franz Liszt (1850).

I adore when mecha as a genre uses classical Romantic compositions for storytelling sm!!!

Especially when in this case, it plays as some secondary theme for Professor Saotome, when in the Armageddon OVA he had good intentions, but was so distraught with grief and anger over Michiru's death that Liebestraum No. 3 as a piece becomes pure bittersweet lamentation, and it works so well. ✨️ Also there are three variations of it in the OST. The first is pure piano, which is largely unchanged from Liszt's original, but the other two are gorgeous reprised arrangements, so I included 2 and 3.
