(OOC below cut)
CONGRATULATIONSSSSS
[he is. stunned. he is feeling so many big emotions right now.]
Noah had rehearsed this moment so many times that the words didn’t feel like words anymore.
They were just sounds he’d repeated in his head while staring at the ceiling at three in the morning. They were lines written in his notes app, rewritten until the screen was full of almost-identical sentences. They were something he’d carried around for months, something that felt heavier and heavier by the minute.
Because every time he got close to speaking those words, fear won.
The first time, he’d planned it perfectly. He had the ring in his pocket, his hands shaking so badly he thought Val might notice. She had looked at him with that soft, curious expression she always got when she knew he was trying to say something important.
And he’d panicked.
The second time, he’d made it halfway through a sentence before his mind filled with every possible thing that could go wrong.
The third time, he’d convinced himself he just needed “the right moment.”
Noah had spent his whole life feeling like moments were things that happened to other people. Like everyone else knew the rules and he was always a few steps behind, trying to figure them out.
But Val had never made him feel like he was behind.
She knew his pauses weren’t him ignoring her. She knew his silence wasn’t a lack of feeling. She knew that sometimes his anxiety got so loud it drowned out everything else.
And somehow, she stayed.
That was what scared him the most.
The idea of losing her.
They were sitting together outside, somewhere quiet where the world felt less overwhelming. Val was talking about something funny that happened earlier and Noah was listening, but his brain was also stuck on the little box in his pocket.
His fingers brushed against it.
His heart immediately started racing.
Not now.
Not yet.
Don’t ruin this.
Val noticed. Because of course she did.
“Noah?” she asked gently.
He froze.
“What?”
She tilted her head. “You’re doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The thing where you look like you’re about to either tell me something important or run away.”
A nervous laugh escaped him before he could stop it.
“Is it that obvious?”
“To me?” Val smiled a little. “Yeah.”
Noah looked down at his hands. They were trembling.
“I’ve tried to do this so many times.”
Val went quiet.
She was listening.
“I keep thinking I’m going to be ready,” he said. “I keep thinking I’ll suddenly stop being scared, and then I don’t.”
His voice got quieter.
“I know I’m not always easy to understand. I know sometimes I shut down, or I overthink things, or I get stuck in my own head. And I know you’ve been hurt before. I know trusting someone is hard.”
Val’s expression softened.
“Noah…”
“But you trusted me anyway.”
The words came out shaky.
“And I don’t want you to think I take that for granted. Because I don’t. I think about it all the time.”
Val reached for his hand.
Noah let her take it.
“You make me feel like I’m not a problem that needs fixing,” he said. “You make me feel like I’m a person. Like I’m someone worth choosing.”
His eyes burned, and he looked away for a second, embarrassed.
“I’m scared,” he admitted. “I’m really, really scared. I’m scared because I love you so much that it feels impossible to say it right.”
Val squeezed his hand.
“You don’t have to say it perfectly.”
Noah took a breath.
For once, he didn’t try to wait until the fear disappeared.
He reached into his pocket.
Val’s eyes widened slightly.
“Noah…”
“I know,” he whispered. “I know I’ve almost done this before.”
A tiny smile appeared on her face.
“You have.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because I kept getting scared.”
Val shook her head.
“Noah, being scared doesn’t mean you love me less.”
That hit him harder than he expected.
He looked at her. He really looked at her.
The person who had survived things that made trusting people difficult. The person who still had fears from someone who had hurt her. The person who somehow still chose kindness. Still chose hope.
Still chose him.
Noah opened the box.
His hands were shaking.
His voice was shaking.
But he didn’t run.
He got onto one knee.
“Val,” he said, “I don’t promise that I’ll never be anxious. I don’t promise I’ll always know the perfect thing to say. But I promise I’ll keep choosing you. I promise I’ll listen. I promise I’ll keep trying.”
He swallowed.
“You’re my best friend. You’re the person I want to come home to. You’re the person who makes the hard days feel possible.”
Val’s eyes filled with tears.
“Noah…”
He took a shaky breath.
“Will you marry me?”
For a moment, everything was quiet.
Then Val laughed and covered her face.
“Yes.”
Noah blinked.
“Yes?”
“Yes, you idiot,” she said, laughing through tears. “Of course yes.”
For a second, he just stared at her.
The answer was everything he’d wanted.
Everything he’d hoped for.
And somehow his brain still found a way to panic.
“Wait.”
Val blinked. “What?”
“Are you sure?”
The smile on her face softened.
“Noah…”
“No, I mean-” He looked down, suddenly overwhelmed. “I mean really sure. Not just because you’re happy right now, or because I surprised you, or because you feel like you have to say yes because I asked.”
Her expression changed immediately.
He kept going, words tumbling out faster.
“I love you. I love you so much. And I want this. I want you. But I don’t ever want you to feel trapped. I don’t want you to feel like you have to prove something to me, especially after everything you’ve been through.”
Val’s eyes softened.
“Noah.”
“And are you okay?” he asked quietly. “Like… really okay? I know this is a lot. I know relationships are scary sometimes. I know-”
She gently squeezed his hand.
“Hey.”
He stopped.
Val smiled through her tears.
“Did you really expect me to not cry when the man I love proposes to me?”
Noah went completely still.
“The man I love,” she repeated. “The person who has been patient with me. Who has made me feel safe. Who has never once made me feel like I had to earn being loved, whilst also never overwhelming me with it.”
Her thumb brushed over his knuckles.
“You really think I’m crying because I’m scared?”
Noah hesitated.
“A little?”
That made her laugh again.
“Oh my god, Noah-”
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop apologizing!”
He gave a small, embarrassed smile.
Val leaned closer.
“I’m crying because I’m happy! Because the person I love just stood- well, knelt there, terrified, and chose to spend his life with me!”
His eyes watered again.
“And yes,” she added, smiling, “I’m sure.”
Noah looked at her for a long moment.
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
A shaky breath left him, like he’d been holding it for months.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay,” he repeated, quieter. “I just needed to know.”
“I know.”
Noah had rehearsed this moment so many times that the words didn’t feel like words anymore.

YOU GOT THIS
the worst she can say is no
Oh god, what if she says noooo...
Come on Noah, you can do this... Just gotta get on one knee and ask...
hench, how do i propose?
[huh, that's a weird text to get from NOAH]
i tried to propose to val yesterday. i took her on a nice date and everything.
but then i just CHICKENED OUT
HELP. ME.
@noah-eucalypt
He stares at it- oh, god he doesn't know. He's terrible with women- and various other creatures evidently..
Hench: I don't have the expertise in that field.. but I will speak with Stanley and get his advice on the manner! If that's alright- he's been divorced almost as many times as I've earned PHD's! Which may not be the most reassuring.. but the women must've agreed so, the proposal at least was a success
PLEASE
PLEASE HENCH I NEED THIS
Hench: I revoke my previous statement Stanley is terrible at advice never ask him for any.
Hench: Why did you chicken out? Did you think she was going to say no? Did it not seem like the right time?
BECAUSE I’M A COWARD
Hench: I think you're underestimating yourself.. you're much braver than you realize.
Hench: I like to map out the event in my mind and attempt to imagine every possible outcome or disturbance and plan a response to it. But if it's nervousness perhaps practicing will help you
i'll try practicing
Hench: If there's anything I can do to aid you let me know. I know you can pull this off
your faith is VERY misplaced but SURE
Hench: You need to put more faith in yourself
i don't think the depression, the ptsd, or the autism will let me. and if they do, they'll be the reason i lose that faith again.

... Val.. Val, I- I wanna leave... I wanna go... Please...
[he doesn't miss being 10 years old]
Noah receives a message from Hench
Hench: How are you doing Noah? It's been a bit since we last spoke
val’s dragged me to a wedding and I HATE IT HEREEEE
Hench: What a coincidence, I'm currently at a wedding! I was told to crash it but it seems to have had a lot of effort put into it I see no reason to.
Hench: I understand wanting to please Val but, if it gets to be too much take a break or leave if need be
do you think we might be at the same wedding?
i don’t wanna leave val alone here. too many strangers.
Hench sits up a little straighter to look around the room.. he's sitting in the back.
Hench: Its a possibility! I'm sitting in the back would you happen to be somewhere close by that section?
Hench: Perhaps she can be convinced to leave early
i can come find you.
i’m not sure. weddings are kind of her thing.
