Any tips for first time rat owners?

Start with 3! Trios are so nice, I don't really love the social dynamic of a pair, a trio is much more natural feeling and when someone passes you are not immediately left with a lone rat. Rats really need friends and it's quite rare that a rat will not get along with others (I've had 37 rats over the years, and out of those ONE rat was unable to get along with others. I adopted him as a lone adult who had been surrendered to the shelter alone, if he had been able to grow up with friends he likely could of been fine with others but it was too late by the time I got him) humans are no substitute for other rats.

Don't bother with other cages, just get the critter nation! Once I got my first one I was like why have I been messing around with these inferior cages all this time.

A good block food should be a majority of your rats diet, oxbow is popular in the US, that's what I use. Rats don't have a ton of things they CANT eat, always double check but chances are if you're eating it they can too, it's fun to share your food with them!

You may have to try a few different kinds of bedding to see what works best for you, your setup, and your rats.

Rats are here for a good time, not a long time. Don't get discouraged with their short life spans.
