I’m sorry but people need to calm down with the whole rape culture comparison for Grace and Daniel. First of all, it doesn’t look like Grace is bothered by his attention. In fact, they’re flirting with each other. Her best friend Megan is also not bothered by the attention he’s giving her. Neither see him as a real threat to her nor do they feel like he’s stalking her the TWO times total that they’ve talked. Rape is about power above all. What power does Daniel have over Grace? None. How far has his sex appeal and behavior gotten him with Grace? No where. The power dynamics are totally inverted in this relationship. I really don’t see how she feels threatened, coerced or forced into doing anything. It’s quite the opposite, she is using his desire to go out with her to get something she wants.
There is douchy behavior and then there is rape culture. Daniel is douchy but so was every damn guy I knew in high school. Even the so called “nerds” tried to peacock in front of girls. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL where hormones and bad decisions reign supreme. They are teenagers who inevitably, like all of us, will get knocked down and learn from their mistakes. Guys and girls alike. Girls are just as savage with each other. Abby bullied the shit out of Grace and we all gush how she’s forgiven Megan. It took Megan confronting her with tears to get Abby to change her behavior.
I don’t know. I just think people are looking at these relationships and actions through an adult lens and not through the lens of a teenager. We all did some stupid fucking things. It’s the lesson you learn from it that matters in the long run.
