Landon and Bella hadnāt know each other very long but Landon felt like he had known her forever. She was easy to talk to and when he was wirh her h noticed that he didnāt feel the hurt that he had been feeling when he was with her. He wasnāt sure how she felt about him but she kept coming back, talking with him, so maybeāshe felt something similar.
He had asked to meet him for lunch in the park. It wasnāt a date but he still did his best to look nice; picking up their food orders and one of his favorite desserts before booking it to the park. He got their early to set up and leaned against the tree, trying to look casual but having a feeling he was failing.

Bella found herself getting close with Landon faster than she thought when they first met at the coffee shop. It wasnāt everyday she clicked with someone like that. Not everyone was so understanding of her bubbly personality and tendency to talk their ear off. It wasnāt her fault, she didnāt make friends often. Most of the time she was either with her sisterās or trying to save the town from one thing or another. It was difficult to connect to people when she was on the verge on death some days. Landon didnāt seem to mind though, he let her ramble on about her books or the movie she watched the night before that ended bad. She liked that he let her be herself. For a moment she felt normal.Ā
When he had asked to hangout she was just happy he wanted to see her again after last nightās conversation when she went on a whole rant about the ending of the Game of Thrones series. She had been trying to catch up for years and now that she did she wished she hadnāt. Still, she wanted to look her best, it wasnāt often she had a reason to put on a cute dress and go to the park. As she approached him the setup brought a smile before any words were even shared.Ā āDid you do all this for... me?ā She asked, motioning down towards their meal.Ā āYou didnāt need to do all this. Thank you.ā Bellaās smile grew as she got over to him.Ā āAnd you look dashing, I might add,ā she said with a soft laugh.
He had never watched game of thrones. He was still trying to hit his groove when it came to reading but he could listen to her talk for hours about anything if thatās what she wanted to do. He found her passion for almost everything refreshing and it gave him hope that he could find his own passion in the future, regardless of what happened.
He smiled when she showed up, his eyes crinkling in the way they did when he was his happiest as he gestured for her to sit. āI remember you telling me you liked the barās chicken sandwich and fries so I got us both one annnnnd I got us some key lime pie because thatās my favorite summer snack.ā He paused āand I got several soft drinks, water, and sweet tea because I forgot to ask you what you drank.ā He grinned āthanks. I was going for casual goth look.ā He spun for her. āI havenāt dressed up in a while. Thought it was about timeā

a little appreciation for That hand placement Joseph Quinn on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
nobodyslefouĀ·:Ā
He had been on his way back to the bed and breakfast his mom ran with groceries in tow when he ran in to a person he didnāt recognizeā¦.. and damn, was he dressed fantastically. For the longest moment, he stared, unsure of what to say in regards to what he was wearing. He himself had chosen comfort over style since he was running errands for his mama but this man looked like he was going to a party. Finally, he found words to describe what he was thinking. āNo! No, you look great!ā He stammered out. āI couldnāt pull it off but you make it work!ā
ā”
He was starting to get nervous. Not that Benji cared what anyone thought, not really, he wouldnāt change for anyone but Riley, but with the way Landon was staring he was beginning to wonder if he looked like an idiot to everyone passing by. Then he spoke.Ā āOh, thank you,ā he breathed a sigh of relief.Ā āIām sure you could pull them off! You wanna try?ā He removed the glasses from his face to hold them out to the other.Ā āHere, try! Check your reflection in the shop window! Theyād suit you too!ā
āOhā¦..ā Landon laughed and gently slid them on his face, turning to show them off before peering at his reflection in the glass of the store front in front of him. āYou knowā¦.. I really didnāt think I could pull of that color but Iām actually kinda in love with it.ā He laughed and handed them back to the man. āI think they truly suit you better thought.ā

āKnowing Lottie, itās probably an innuendo,ā Landon said without looking up. āWould we really expect anything different?ā He was grinning as he plucked at the strings on the old guitar heād found at the bed and breakfast, trying to remember how to tune the thing. He looked up and snagged the phone out of Tiaās hand, his nose curled as he read the offending messages for himself. āJesus Christ, Tia. I feel the need to apologize. We arenāt all like that but enough of us are that itās a big freaking issue. Damn.ā He handed the phone back and went back to fidgeting with the tuning pegs on the guitar. āIām the wrong person to ask. Iāve been in love with the same person since I was seven and we can see how well that worked out.ā He was shacked up with Belle taking care of him. Although he had grown accustomed to the thought and wanted to get along with her, it still hurt. He hoped that wouldnāt last forever though. āMaybe you donāt need anyone. Being self reliant is pretty amazing.ā
TIANA chuckled at Landon and smiled in agreement.Ā āSure sounds like our Lottie, beautiful and bold.ā Tiana was never as confident as Charlotte in that way, she could never match the blondes flirtatious energy. But then again after reminding herself of who Charlotte had dated she was glad she never tried. Tiana gave a small wave of dismissal, it wasnāt Landonās job to apologize for every asshole. Sheād come to understand internet dating was just more.. forward than real life.Ā āI know thereās still a few good men out there, I just think maybe this thing isnāt for me.ā she shrugged. Tiana gave Landon a small smile as she watched him with his guitar, he seemed so innocent, she just wanted to wrap him up in a blanket and keep him safe.Ā āAwh I think thereās romance in lettinā your heart take over. I really hope this person is worthy of that love youāre given out.ā Tiana was fed up with seeing her friends offer up their hearts for the undeserving, like for example Naveen.Ā āHey! I am self reliantā she chuckled.Ā āMy amazing friends are all my big āol heart needs.ā
Landon grinned. āMaybe one day youāll meet someone here. A poor but kind man visiting from somewhere. Falls head over heels for you and admires your work ethic.ā He would accept nothing less for her if he was being honest, propping his chin in his hand as he stole a bit of whipped cream and popped it into his mouth. He debated on saying anything for a moment then blurted, āThere is no such thing as Romance when it comes to loving Dominic Gaston.ā He slapped his hand over his mouth, instantly regretting it, and let his head hit the counter top with a thud. āTia can we just pretend I didnāt say that? Itās not like Iām his first or even second pick anyway. Iām not Belle DuPont. Besides, youāre right. Who needs love when you have friends who treat you better than you could have ever imagined anyway?ā
TIANA shoved another dollop of cream from her iced coffee into her mouth as she scrolled down through her phone to find the receipts of a message sheād received.Ā Ā āYeah see Lottie put me on this appā she said in order for me to take some me time I needed to find someone to help with the downtimeā¦whatever that means.ā she mused rolling her eyes.Ā āAh see, right here he said āI love a woman who knows her way around the kitchenā ā naturally I blocked him.ā she explained, sipping from her caramel flavored caffeine boost.Ā Ā āPlease tell me this messaging stuff gets easier?ā @ptstartā

It had been a long time since Landon had picked up the old acoustic guitar and he found himself questioning if he could even remember playing it. Luckily for him, it was like riding a bike. The first few minutes were a little bumpy but you never honestly forgot how to do it.
His fingers strummed at the strings, playing a gentle song that he remembered his mom singing to him when he was much younger; when he was sad or not feeling well. He might play the guitar decently but he could not sing⦠not that it stopped him by any means.
Stars shining bright above you. Night breezes seem to whisper āI love youā. Birds singing in a sycamore tree. Dream a little dream of meā¦.
It didnāt occur to him that anyone would listen to what he was singing as he played the music on his momās battered old six string. All he could do was grin as he leaned back against the tree with his eyes closed; half smile on his face.
He was surprised to hear the sound of an instrument, and then... singing? Mason was drawn from his chaotic thoughts by the sound of music, his curiosity getting the better of him. It wasnāt hard to follow the sound and trace it back to Landon, who seemed happy just sitting and playing. It was a nice sight, and for a moment he found himself swaying along.
Mason meant to just stand and listen, but when he took a step forward to listen better, he tripped, his phone falling from his pocket. āAh, shoot--ā He offered the man a sheepish smile, his presence now obvious.Ā āSorry about that, so sorry. It sounded wonderful, how long have you been playing?ā
Landon looked up when he realized he wasnāt on his own and grinned. Everyone knew who the Mayor of Prentiss was, even if only in passing. Seeing him this far out of town surprised him but he just grinned and leaned back against the tree and set the guitar aside. āYouāre ok. I was wrapping up anyway.ā He paused to think about it for a second before grinning. āMy mom started teaching me when I was five. Sheās way more musical than I am but itās nice to have a little family sing along from time to time. Itās kind of our thing.ā He paused and then smiled a little wider. āWanna sit? Thereās plenty of room.ā

āOkay I used to think that.ā Landon laughed as he leaned back in his chair. āBut Henry Cavill went out and stood under a huge billboard of him as Clark Kent and no one recognized him so itās really possible that people were that clueless!ā He shook his head. āIād want to wear a mask though. Whatās the point of being a hero if you donāt get to dress like one?!ā He grinned as she told him about Tolkienās books, unable to keep from smiling as she gesticulated excitedly . āSee I thought the same thing but there are some truly elitist pricks on TikTok that like to gate keep reading andā¦. Honestly it just makes me exhausted? Like where do people find the time, honestly?ā His lips curled into a grin, his face flushing as he spoke softly. āRemind me to thank them for messing up our ordersā¦.ā

Bella let her jaw drop slightly. There was no way what she was hearing was true. People couldnāt possibly be that dumb, right? Although after seeing some of the things she had fighting crime she could almost believe it.Ā āThatās wild! How?! How could you not notice?! I wonder if itās because we just donāt recognize details like that until we know to look for them or something,ā she said with a small shrug. Thatās another thing she could go on about is sociology. In another life sheād be a scientist or so she always imagined.Ā āThey must not sleep or something. I couldnāt do it.ā The girl took another sip, remembering thatās what started all this.Ā āOh stop it,ā she let out a small laugh, shaking her head so her red curls tapped her cheeks.Ā āAs if you donāt meet lots of people with no time and lots of book recommendations.ā
āI hate to see it but I think that people tend to only care about themselves,ā he smiled sadly. āIf it doesnāt involve us directly we tend not to notice.ā He flushed slightly. āMyself included. Iāve lived here my whole life and Iāve never noticed you. But⦠that being said Iām working on not being so self centered so maybe today the universe is telling me that itās workingā¦.ā He grinned at her and ruffled his hair, his face pinking with a blush that crept up the back of his neck to his ears. He laughed then. āMaybeā¦. But I havenāt always been brave enough to carry on a conversation. So this isā¦. This is really niceā¦..ā

Landon wanted to hug him. Maybe he could have without being rebuffed but something kept him from it. Instead he just met his gaze, studying him as he spoke. āIt was inevitableā¦. You know that right?ā He blurted. āWait. That came out wrong. What I mean is⦠someone is always going to know something you donāt. How to fight or hunt. Iām just glad it ended beforeā¦.ā He couldnāt even finish that thought.
Domās next words sent him reeling and he shook it off like a dog shaking water out of its coat. āWhat did you just say?ā He took his hand when what he wanted to do what squeeze him in a tight hug and chase away the pain, both physical and mental, that his friend was feeling. āLook me in the eye you fucker.ā He growled softly, not giving him an opportunity to look away. āIām upset that youāre hurt. If Iād have been there,ā like I should have been. āI would never have let it get this bad. I never want you to fail or get hurt. Do you hear me? Thatās the last thing I could ever want. Youāre my best friend youā¦. Youā¦. Absolute jackass!ā
His hands were shaking as he let Dominic go; the display the most dominant thing he had ever done in regards to the other man. āNot that Iāve ever been very good at fightingā¦.ā He admitted with a rueful laugh. āMaybe I should take classes or something if this is going to be your new fuxking normalā¦.ā
šŖ
A bewildered expression took ahold of Dominicās features as Landon explained that losing at some point was inevitable. Though he couldnāt even be upset, because he was right. Landon was usually always right.Ā āI knew going into it that it wasnāt going to be prettyā¦I just thought I was stronger thanā¦ā He trailed off, exhaling through his nose as he looked down at his broken body.Ā āThis..ā He motioned to his chest, before swallowing and resting his arms back atop the table again.Ā āMe too.ā he replied solemnly.
āWhat did you expect me to say? You left.ā Dominic huffed, tilting his chin away for a moment. It was childish really. Gaston knew he wasnāt always a good friend, or person for that matter. It just hurt that the one consistent thing he had since childhood just decided to up and leave for New York one day. Dominic mightāve been good at bottling his emotions underneath his rough exterior but Landon leaving fucking hurt. Dominic met Landonās eyes slowly like a child being scolded at by his mother. Some things really never did change.
He couldnāt remember if Landon had ever talked to him like this before, let alone call him a jack ass. Dominic watched with wide eyes as the other seemed genuine in his stance. Dominic paused before busting out in a loud chuckle, holding his stomach as he did.Ā āFuck, Landon donāt make laugh, shit still hurts.ā He smiled for the first time since seeing Landon again.Ā āGlad to see you finally grew a spine, proud of you.ā
Meeting Landonās gaze, Gastonās mask slipped for a moment as he grinned at the other.
āYouāre my best friend too.ā
The moment he finished talking he slapped a hand over his mouth. Before is journey up to New York, he never would have spoken to him like that. Even now, it still shocked him as he stared down at Dominic in wide eyed terror. He slowly dropped his hand, knowing that even though Dominicās reaction mildly terrified him, he meant every word of it. Including the jack ass part.
The moment the other man showed pain he was there, offering support. That was how it was between them. He would be there the moment dom needed him, perhaps even when he didnāt. He didnāt know why he thought the trip would change anything. He gently reached up and touched his bruised cheek, Turing his face back towards him with careful fingers.
āIām sorry if my leaving made you feel abandoned dom. It was just something I needed to do for myself. I donāt thinkā¦. I mean I know that I didnāt know who I was on my own. Justā¦. The Landon that existed connected to you and I needed to learn that before I could⦠move on.ā He could have told him then that loving him unrequited was the most painful thing he had ever had to deal with; even worse than breaking his leg or getting shot in the ass with a BB gun when they were kidsā¦ā but now wasnāt the time.
āYouāll always be my best friendā¦. The one I invite to the B and B to taste test my moms breakfast pastries and⦠the person I go hunting with even though it isnāt my favorite thing to do because you like itā¦.ā He laughed softly, dropping his hand. Things were getting too feely. He scratched his head and shrugged. āSpeaking of my mom, she wants you to come try her new cinnamon roll recipe. She said Iāll eat anything but youāll be honest about which one really tastes betterā¦. So get to feeling better soon. She missed you too.ā
Landon hadnāt abandoned Dom but he had taken a step back. In the time heād been keeping his distance he had decided to change. Heād cut his long hair short, heād gotten some decent clothes, and had what heād heard the kids call a āglow upā. For the first time in a long time he was happy with himself. He still hurt when he thought of Dom but he figured it would hurt less and less as time went on. He couldnāt wait for that day.
He pulled up in front of Tianaās place. He had been craving her key lime pie for ages and he had decided that while avoiding his friend was necessary, avoiding pie in any form wasnāt. He pocketed his keys and stepped inside the restraint; inhaling the scent of gumbo and other spicy foods that were favored by the residents of Prentiss before finding a seat at his favorite table for one.
He leaned back and pulled out his phone and scrolled through his Facebook, catching up on things heād missed when heād been busy earlier in the day. He felt comfortable in the buzzy half talk of the restaurant. He even ordered a second piece of pie; savoring every bite as he replied to some emails. He was so content that he wasnāt even watching who came in the door.
nobodyslefouā:
He nearly dropped his phone as Tiana yelled his name. He looked up like he had been caught doing something he shouldnāt have and then grinned as he jumped up and hugged her tight, swinging her around before setting her back on her feet. āLook at you!ā He laughed, squeezing her hands in his as he looked her up and down. āPretty as a picture!ā He ducked his head at her playful chastisement and grinned. āI know. Iāve been kindaā¦. Doing me?ā It sounded stupid but the past couple of months had been spent soul searching and learning how to exist in a world where dom wasnāt the center of it all. He was proud of how he we he was doing actually. āIām back now though. How have you been?ā
TIANA grinned as her arms wrapped around Landon, clinging to him for dear life. She had made many friends here in Prentiss but Landon was one of her favourites. Sssssh donāt tell the others!Ā āI could say the same for you! Love the new look but I gottaā say your curls were too cute.ā she beamed, running a hand over his shorter cut. Tiana nodded as she slid down into the booth.Ā āI get that, taking some you time-- whatever it is itās really workinā babe! Youāre almost glowing.ā she beamed excitedly, so happy to see her friend happy. She gave a wave of dismissal.Ā āOh you know.. maid of honor duties.. workinā.. never anything new. -- Tell me! Did yaā go travelling?ā
He set her in her feet and smiled down at the girl he held in his arms. He grinned. āYeah, my mom said the same thing. Itāll grow out and Iāll just pull it back in a messy bun instead of cutting it because the consensus seems to be in favor of my longer hair.ā He grinned ruefully and shook his head, amused that so many people cared about the length of his hair. He blushed at her compliment, unable to hide the pleasure he got from her compliment. āGood. I know I wasnāt feeling too great when I left.ā He was always honest with Tia and honestly she probably knew about the mess he had found himself in with Dom without him even having to say a word. Never mind that he would trust her with his deepest secrets; no questions asked. āI did, actually,ā he said, shaking himself out of himself at the question. āI went down to New York, did some shopping saw some shows. I didnāt want to go anywhere too crazy in case mom needed me but it was nice and far enough away i didnāt feel trapped.ā He looked up with a grin. āSpeaking of,ā he said, rummaging around in his bag. āI got you something!
[ š»š°š½š³š¾š½ ]
āRight?ā He laughed. āLike⦠that would depress me. Iād just want to sleep.ā He laughed. āAt least you arenāt like Clark Kent. His biggest weakness is a space rock.ā He let his neediness on the subject of comic book heroes slip. If anyone would appreciate it, he felt like Bella would. āOkay so whatās your opinion on Lord of the Rings?ā He asked, cocking his head like a curious puppy. āI want to read the trilogy before I watch the movies. I think Iāll have to listen to the audio books thought. Does that still count as reading?ā He paused, a grin spreading on his face. āI donāt mind, actually. Itās kind of cute.ā
āæ
Bella shook her head, her nose scrunching up as she did so. The thought itself was unpleasant. She had done enough damage in her day job but she couldnāt imagine harming an animal. In fact, she cared for every living creature, even the spiders sheād have to rid from Bernadetteās room.Ā āTrue, but at the same time he also thought a pair of glasses made him unrecognizable. As if his bone structure alone didnāt give it away,ā the girl said almost immediately in response. Sheād thought about this a lot. Having her own super human abilities made her think a lot about having a weakness and another identity. Instead, sheād just always been Bella. Sometimes she wished she could hide from it all but that wasnāt the cards she was dealt.Ā āOh my gosh you have to read the books first! Theyāre a little slow sometimes but youāll be happy you did. The movies are great but thereās so much youāre missing,ā she continued to ramble.Ā āOf course it counts! Youāre still getting all that good detail and plot just in a more time efficient way.ā Bella grinned as she finished speaking.Ā āWhat can I say? Just your friendly neighborhood book worm here,ā she said with a small shrug, followed by laughter.
āOkay I used to think that.ā Landon laughed as he leaned back in his chair. āBut Henry Cavill went out and stood under a huge billboard of him as Clark Kent and no one recognized him so itās really possible that people were that clueless!ā He shook his head. āIād want to wear a mask though.
