After reading some Vader and Luke father son bonding fics, With Great Power is awesome. I'm honestly kinda bummed that I haven't yet found a good fix where vader totally dumps the galaxy in lake's lap. As much trouble and trauma as izuku had with one relatively speaking small country... am curious if online community's in other countries didn't form up like "say, do you think he could come take over our country and fix things?" *cough* America *cough*

Funny you should mention Luke and Vader bonding fics in this context - I’m pretty sure that there’s one in particular that subconsciously contributed to the idea for With Great Power. It’s called Welcome to the Club by Malicean. While Vader doesn’t quite dump the galaxy in Luke’s lap, you might find a few parallels in terms of how he handles the galaxy and making peace with the Rebel Alliance. Plus, it involves Luke and Vader working together, which is awesome.
Back to WGP. I'm sure it comes as a surprise to exactly no one that Izuku has meme status in a decent number of other countries. It’s anyone’s guess how much any of that was facilitated by All for One - I’d say if at all, but his stealth PR campaign is hardly limited to national borders. Just look at Rick. He only has so much time, though, and a cute 19-year-old hero who got a country dumped in his lap by a supervillain is definitely meme-worthy in his own right, particularly by countries who can enjoy the hilarity with a level of distance from more serious effects. And, of course, “I, for one, welcome our Supreme Overlord” is a highly applicable meme that absolutely sees plenty of use.
America’s response might be a bit mixed. Of course, not everyone is nearly as negative as the American UN representative, but as an American myself, we’re rather... bad at keeping up with the rest of the world’s politics, and so apart from the meme potential, the more significant and controversial changes that Izuku introduces are unfortunately filtered out before the majority of Americans find out about them. The pockets of the internet in which Izuku’s popularity involves half-joking comments about “say, think Japan could send him over when they’re done?” are mostly areas populated by more than just Americans. But within those pockets, there are definitely a lot of people who would genuinely love for Izuku to happen to their own country. Or so they say.
See, the part immediately preceding Izuku taking over, involving the violent overthrow which cleared the way for all those changes? Yeah, that one they’re a lot less enthusiastic about. And Izuku wouldn’t have been nearly so successful at introducing his changes without the unique lack of resistance he faced from an existing government. Thankfully for everyone, All for One knows he would be murdered in every way possible if he got it into his head to hand Izuku another country with a government conveniently removed and ready for upgrading; otherwise, the internet giving him these ideas might be really, really bad.

God comes up with a new rule to deter innocent human sacrifices in his name. From now on, there should be TWO human sacrifices; the first will be chosen by the town as usual, the second will be chosen by the first tribute, without any objections.
So I felt in the completely random mood to find a writing prompt and write something short and original, and this happened.
When the Oracle declared the Holy Proclamation, no one quite knew what to do with it.
Two sacrifices? And the first sacrifice would choose the second? Surely, if someone were about to die, they would use the opportunity to take their revenge - most likely, on one of those who chose them.
Everyone knew that the gods were cruel, or at least capricious. Case in point, this particular order - no one quite understood the reason for this madness. But what could they do? Their own god was old and powerful (if a bit foolish), one of the few who still required human sacrifices to use his power. Most of the others had been replaced already - Godkillers tended to target the bloodier ones, since when they took the place of the god they killed upon their deaths their new worshipers would be particularly grateful for the reprieve. But Godkillers weren’t easy to find, born every few centuries - and even if one were to be found, if the town pooled their entire wealth, they’d never afford to hire the services of someone so powerful. No, there was no way around this insane proclamation.
The second tribute could be anyone - the High Priest himself could not refuse to die, if the first should desire it. How could they trust even the most innocent townsperson to choose their partner in death, when they had nothing to lose? No, the town couldn’t risk it, they decided. This had to be the solution - God obviously desired no more sacrifices.
But time passed, and rain refused to fall on the fields. Dangerous creatures crept from the wilderness, hungry because their prey was dying from an ever-dwindling food supply. The river dried to a trickle. When sickness swept through half the town, everyone knew they were on a time limit. They couldn’t even leave now - the other towns would turn away the plague-carriers, and it was better to die in their own homes than in the wilderness, torn apart by ravenous beasts.
Maybe it wasn’t that God sought no sacrifices. Maybe he wanted to teach them humility - that they should be willing to offer anyone, anyone at all, for their own survival. Maybe it was a lesson in desperation - that human sacrifices shouldn’t be treated lightly. It was cruel, but they were dying.
It was the fire that finally sealed the town’s resolve. A fire that couldn’t be put out - there was no water, nothing adequate to quench the flames that left half the town in ruins. A sacrifice had to be made.
So the town gathered in the square - even the sick dragged themselves. There wasn’t even a shortage of volunteers - so many were dying, this was simply a way to die faster.
But it wasn’t someone nearly dead who stepped forward with a ringing voice, claiming the right of tribute and taking hold of the ceremonial knife herself. No, it was the Oracle’s own daughter.
It wasn’t entirely unexpected. She had begged to be the sacrifice months ago - when the beasts were sighted and the plague took its first life. But she was the hope of the town - ever since she had knelt in the temple for a day and a night, as a child of ten, and emerged with the sigil on her cheek that denoted her fate. She was wise and kind and good, and she was Chosen. Everyone knew that the death of a Chosen was the death of hope - they were fated to stand against the evils of the world, and without them, evil would triumph uncontested.
But she took the knife, smiled gently, and said “This is why I was Chosen.”
The Oracle wept. The priests begged her to reconsider. But she simply repeated, “This is why I was Chosen,” and no one could argue.
The high priest’s voice shook as he asked her choice of second tribute.
Her smile widened. “For my second tribute, I choose God.”
A hush fell. The town waited for the skies to rumble with anger, for lightning to fall - surely God wouldn’t allow such an absurd choice.
Until they remembered that, on God’s own unchangeable word, there could be no objections.

I don’t really strongly ship anyone in BNHA. Then again, I don’t tend to be a shippy person in general. I’ll sometimes read ship fics when I’m in the right mood, and occasionally get into a pairing based on some author selling it for me with a really good fic. With BNHA in particular, though, I’m much more fond of the found family (Class 1-A) and parental vibes (Dad Might and Dadzawa), and tend to prefer stuff that focuses on that.
See, I’m incredibly picky about what hits my romance buttons, and BNHA just doesn’t have any pairings that really hit those buttons for me. It does have a strong focus on family, and explores a lot of complex themes regarding it. A lot of the Class 1-A kids have motivations that can be traced back to their families in some way, either good or bad - Uraraka, Iida and Todoroki are obvious examples, and I could make the case that Bakugou’s drive to be the best and Izuku’s own need to save people stem at least in part from their home lives. Their relationships with their classmates often develop in response to those familial motivations, which makes found family vs. blood family an incredibly strong theme even without the subplots devoted to how blood doesn’t define a person. And then there’s Izuku’s relationship with Parental All Might, and how Aizawa mentors and protects the students with a devotion that goes above and beyond a simple teacher. Even the League of Villains is a big messed-up group that somehow has found a home in each other. These themes and the complexities around them make BNHA for me; they’re a big part of my enjoyment. Throwing romance into the mix, or focusing too much on it... can easily take the attention away from all that, or even, horror of horrors, simplify the complexity down to who wants to kiss who. This results in me being sad and disappointed and going to find another fic that focuses on the parts of BNHA relationships and themes I’m actually interested in. Not to say that romance can’t be part of found family, or can’t add something to the tapestry that BNHA makes of its characters and relationships, but it’s rare to see shipping fics that do it justice, and my interests aren’t in that direction so I’m not going to spend time on it myself.
That being said, I’ve found some REALLY good Tododeku fics out there. I can get behind the idea of Erasermic, too, because it’s already hilarious that those polar opposites are good friends, so why not take it a step farther? But in both cases, I’m just as happy watching them be Platonic Life Partners. Because devoted friendship can be powerful too.
Ranting aside, give me a ship and/or shipping fic with a focus on complete trust and unshakable loyalty and characters who communicate with each other and share each other’s secrets and have each other’s backs, with a relationship that develops because of who those characters are as people and all the ways they play off each other and mesh with each other’s personalities, which leads to the characters gaining something and becoming better as people, while remaining solidly in-character and well-written, and I’ll probably ship whoever you like. Within reason. As long as I’m interested in the characters in the first place.

Hello! What a lovely ask to get. I’m glad you enjoyed my story so much; I’m happy it’s hooked so many people. I definitely went for a mood whiplash at the end of that first chapter, and I’m pretty sure it’s paid off in terms of getting attention and interest - though, if nothing else, it definitely amuses me.
I’ve been... recovering from a stressful semester of college. It went great, but distance learning took a lot out of me, and I kinda crashed afterward. Other than that, really the worst that’s happening is that I’m going a bit stir crazy from staying inside, but hey, that’s the times.
It’s nice spring weather here - a bit on the chilly side, windy, perfect for blowing my hair directly into my face when I try to take a walk. It was a whole 54 F/12 C today, which is a fairly normal temperature at this time of year. As far as I’m concerned it’s perfect weather except for the hair problems. I saw some lovely blue wildflowers on today’s walk, as well as several happy dogs from across the street, so I’m definitely not the only one who appreciates the current weather, either.
Some more random bits of trivia about With Great Power
Part 1
Might as well just… put this here. Spoilers below! I ended up talking a lot about the villain side of things.
All for One uses a quirk he refers to as “Clothing Swap” to replace Izuku’s hero gear in Chapter 1. For some random reason, I made a description of the quirk that ended up in my notes, though it never became relevant again. Here it is:
Clothing Swap: The target may have any article(s) considered to be “worn” swapped with any other article(s) the user has seen them wear previously. The user may choose themselves as a target. The swap may be uneven - a hat can be swapped for a full outfit, leading to someone really overdressed, or a full outfit for a hat, leading to the opposite - but “nothing” is not an option for either side of the swap. Objects in pockets or similar places of holding may be transferred into similar places in the new outfit, if available; otherwise they will stay with the clothing they were originally in.
See that part about the user needing to see the target wearing the clothes previously? All for One’s been stalking, and Izuku would’ve been able to guess almost immediately if he heard the details of that quirk.
Speaking of my notes, I tend to name the random fic ideas I write down in order to keep them easy to reference in my notes (or head). I don’t always use those names for the finished product. I liked the reference to the quote, “With great power comes great responsibility”, that I ended up going with for WGP’s story/chapter titles; but I actually came up with that theme after the majority of the fic was done. For most of the writing process, I kept it filed under “Kingmaker AU”.
All for One’s threats to Izuku in the first chapter were something of a bluff. If Izuku refused to listen, All for One would’ve been in quite a pinch - he certainly didn’t want to kill or Noumufy Izuku, and he had the feeling that “lock him in a vault and make him listen” wouldn’t work any better here than it did with his brother. He did have other plans in case getting Izuku to agree to parley failed, but he was massively relieved when it worked. (Izuku’s threat in Chapter 10, on the other hand, was definitely not a bluff.)
Gigantomachia saw the resemblance between Izuku and All for One the moment Izuku opened his mouth - not just in the contents of Izuku’s self-introduction, but Izuku’s voice itself. As seen in canon, he has a very dramatic emotional reaction to hearing All for One’s voice; and while Izuku’s isn’t an obvious match, he could hear similar notes. This was helped by the fact that Izuku was very tired and decided to start making threats, and was consciously using All for One as a model for those. Gigantomachia’s easy initial acceptance of Izuku was mostly down to this (”He speaks with the voice of my Master”). Of course, Izuku’s speech about not proving himself to everyone who asked did make something of an impression on its own merits.
As for the rest of the villains, Shigaraki and Kurogiri were the only ones close enough to All for One to notice Izuku’s resemblance to him (or care; if Dabi had any suspicions, he kept them to himself). It took a few days after Izuku was left with the dictatorship for Shigaraki. Kurogiri, on the other hand, noticed years ago - but decided it wasn’t his place to wonder about it, so he didn’t.
None of the villains guessed that Izuku was a close relative of All for One’s. They all thought, at best, that he was some distant relative who All for One had taken an interest in and who happened to suit his plans. They were immensely surprised by All for One’s choice of successor.
Shigaraki and Kurogiri got emails after All for One disappeared, too, not just Izuku. All for One drafted them beforehand, as well as a few alternate versions for theoretical scenarios that didn’t happen. Shigaraki’s gave him some sarcastic advice on how to make nice with the new Overlord, which worked surprisingly well. Kurogiri’s included advice on Izuku’s preferred coffee brands, which also worked surprisingly well.
All for One had discussed a few things with Gigantomachia beforehand and so didn’t bother with an email - namely along the lines of, “I’m planning to make someone else the Supreme Overlord in my place. Do what you want, but your life will be short and painful if he doesn’t stay in one piece.”
Shigaraki and Kurogiri spent most of their free time after All for One disappeared trying to track him down. Izuku won their loyalty over time - or more accurately, having gainful employment and being surrounded by decent people while trying his best to behave himself helped Shigaraki feel less inclined toward villainy, and Kurogiri appreciated being given a fair chance at all. However, Shigaraki in particular had many questions for All for One, and Kurogiri followed his lead. Gigantomachia them helped out for a while, until…
Gigantomachia saw Izuku’s “father’s” signature, and realized he might’ve accidentally stumbled upon a secret that All for One would be happy to kill half of Japan over. He smartly refrained from telling the other two, and pulled back somewhat on his assistance in their search.
When Gigantomachia met “Hisashi” in person for that trip to America, he sent a panicked text to Shigaraki that he wasn’t offering any more help and that they should stop going behind Izuku’s back if they truly valued their lives and limbs intact. This sparked their decision to bring their research to Aizawa while Izuku was away. Yagi’s assumption that they were afraid of Izuku’s reaction was entirely legitimate, but that wasn’t the full reason for their choice of timing.
One more note about Gigantomachia: When Izuku had his panic attack in Chapter 5, the reason Yagi showed up was because Gigantomachia made a beeline for his office and told him that the Supreme Overlord needed his help. Yagi ran.
I honestly didn’t expect for the villains to take up so much of the fic (or this trivia). I also was hoping to have more of Aizawa and Class 1-A in the story. But since criminal rehabilitation ended up being such a focus, the villains ended up being particularly relevant. I’m still a tiny bit annoyed about it.
How much did Inko know about Hisashi? He tried to give her a similar story to the one he gave Izuku once he returned. However, she knew him and his views well enough that she managed to get out of him that he wasn’t “working with villains” entirely under duress, and that he had done a few things to earn the enmity of “people who were after him”. She was surprised when Izuku made All for One tell her the truth about his villain identity, but less than Izuku expected.
I don’t usually have soundtracks for my writing - I’ll put on whatever music I feel like listening to, or even nothing, depending on my mood. However, for Chapter 10, I wrote most of it while listening to “Devastation and Reform” by Relient K on repeat. I think it fits the self-inflicted tragedy that is All for One’s existence pretty well, and helped me capture the right tone for his side of the story.
Alright, a cheerier note is in order. Originally, Chapter 6 (now the Social Media Chapter) was an utter slog of exposition that made me despair. I ended up scrapping it and rewriting it as a social media interlude that communicated the stuff I wanted it to communicate, but I ended up cutting along with it a draft of the scene Hatsume’s video refers to. Y’know, the one where Izuku sets an attempted assassin on fire. It was indeed accidental - she was hounding Izuku to let her make the perfect Supreme Overlord outfit, and had shoved an ordinary-looking watch at him when the assassins showed up. He threw the watch at one of them and it exploded. Hatsume got yelled at by a tired Izuku afterward for endangering the paperwork he’d have to fill out all over again.
In the Discord conversation where I mentioned the initial concept of this fic, someone proposed a scenario in which Izuku starts crying in the middle of the UN because some representative was being an asshole about how Japan was being handled, and then everyone else would jump in to go, “Nice going, Rick, you ruined a perfectly good Supreme Overlord, now he has anxiety.” I therefore decided that I would indeed make Izuku cry at the UN. This was how the UN chapter came to exist. Of course, in my version, the tears were because of the support Izuku got, and the good guy was named Rick.
Izuku setting someone on fire was also a concept I got from my favorite Discord server. Several other people had Izuku setting people on fire in their stories. I decided to join them.
Finally… you know how I abbreviated “Supreme Overlord” to “S.O.”? Yes, I’m aware that the abbreviation usually stands for “Significant Other”, and I decided to go with it because I thought it was funny. And a good way to embarrass Izuku even further.
I think that got all the major trivia and a few minor bits too. Though I probably can dig out other things from my brain if people have questions; my askbox is open. Otherwise, I’ve got a new prospective writing project in the concept stage, so I’ll switching mental gears off of WGP, I think.

It seems one or two people are interested in this. I’ve mentioned a few of these points on my favorite Discord server, but I might as well put them all together here. Spoilers for the fic below!
Why didn’t All for One squish Aizawa like a bug when he should have been perfectly capable of it, right after taking the poor man’s quirk? It’s because All for One was planning for the future. He knew that Izuku (as Supreme Overlord) would need capable underlings, preferably ones with Izuku’s best interests in mind. Of the people close to Izuku, Aizawa was the closest to meeting All for One’s approval in both respects. In his stalking observation of Izuku over the past few years, he developed just a bit of a grudging respect for the man and his dedication to attempting to keep Izuku from charging headlong into every dangerous situation Izuku was within a 100 km radius of. While Aizawa decided to assume that All for One was too busy fending off other heroes to actually bother squishing him, this was an entirely deliberate choice on All for One’s part.
On the subject of Aizawa, the cat cafe he stayed at is the cat cafe from the Vigilantes manga. It made a truly fantastic retirement home, as well as a safe place to keep track of the criminal underworld on the sly.
We know that Shouto Todoroki had time to talk to Dabi/Touya before the interviews, because they came with a hero reform plan. This definitely happened because Shouto marched up to the National Diet Building, and calmly told a very nervous Kurogiri that he was there to see Dabi. When Dabi appeared, he half-dragged the supervillain brother home for a proper family dinner. It was a bit awkward but Fuyumi was happy to have all the siblings together. Between that and Shouto’s determination to hammer out a plan for hero reform, the ice was broken surprisingly quickly (pun intended).
Why didn’t Izuku notice All for One being Hisashi sooner? Well, denial is definitely a thing. There’s also the dissonance between linking a parental figure with the world’s most feared supervillain, absentee or not - that’s a pretty difficult conclusion to come to, normally. There’s even the fact that Izuku saw All for One in person all of twice - once at Kamino, and then again in the first chapter of this fic - and both times were very emotionally charged, with an impression skewed by the view that he was seeing a Terrible Monster, which makes All for One hard to recognize out of the literal and metaphorical mask. But the biggest reason? Long-term sleep deprivation and stress. It was pretty bad before he was suddenly pushed into being the Supreme Overlord of Japan, and it got much worse after. If Izuku had more sleep, he’d probably have figured out Hisashi’s identity much sooner, denial or not; Hisashi wasn’t being subtle (see below).
Hisashi looked so selfless when he left even the clothes on his back to Izuku. Don’t fall for it; he left all legal assets to Izuku. He has plenty that aren’t legal. All this was part of his preparation for a plan that didn’t happen...
Because Hisashi planned to disappear again, permanently. He expected the jig to be up as soon as Izuku heard Hisashi speak once (a bit egotistic of him). His original plan was to spend as much time with Inko as he could while offering a bit of behind-the-scenes support of Izuku’s rule, and then when Izuku inevitably came home and recognized him, he’d properly disappear to a nice sheep farm somewhere remote (he had a few prospects already picked out). He’d hoped that Izuku wouldn’t be interested enough in the returned Hisashi Midoriya to actively track him down, but it was a risk he had to take to turn things over to Izuku properly. After he heard Izuku ranting to his friends that he was getting ready to stake out his own home (through those convenient bugs left in the National Diet Building), he decided to at least make sure the reveal was on his own terms, somewhere relatively private and secure. Then Izuku didn’t recognize him and even tried to hire him, and Hisashi quickly rearranged his plans to account for the delayed recognition. He knew it was inevitable; Hisashi couldn’t clean up all the clues, so he ended half-assing any attempts at hiding his identity in order to at least keep control of the timeline for the reveal. As long as it happened while Izuku was still in government, he could head for the hills (literally and metaphorically) and Izuku would be too busy to pursue him. He couldn’t bring himself to actually sit down and tell Izuku personally, but he didn’t expect to keep things a secret permanently. And then Izuku smashed all his expectations and offered a chance to not lose his family again. A lot of plans got ditched. Basically, All for One was never as on top of things in this fic as he makes himself out to be.
Speaking of hiding his identity, why did he keep his real name? Hisashi didn’t see the point for the vast majority of his life, barring times he specifically went incognito for this or that venture. The government wanted to cover up his existence anyway; why not let them do the hard work? He didn’t need to make things easier for them, and it’s not like they could really do anything effectively to him; he really was that powerful. He did keep his businesses anonymous for the most part, but it was a private joke to him that they were still all perfectly legal, up to and including no false names being involved. It was only when All Might showed up and proved to be an actual threat that Hisashi realized his mistake and took his own steps to conceal his identity - which were surprisingly effective, as the government had done too good of a job already, and All for One just had to clear out a few old compromising records to avoid All Might accessing them and finding his real name, which would have been a massive pain. He had several close calls, but his panicky attempts at hiding his identity actually paid off. The government fire is part of that - definitely All for One’s work, but done a bit hastily, and as a result, sloppily.
Remember how All for One didn’t talk to Izuku much after the UN speech? Remember how he mentioned that Izuku should get a new phone? He was sulking for that entire trip because he heard Izuku call Yagi “Dad”, thanks to his stalking keeping an ear on Izuku’s conversations.
On a different note, Izuku, throughout this fic, has adapted All for One’s own strategies for his own purposes. Of special note, though, is Izuku’s speech at the end of Chapter 10, beginning with “I don’t think you understand, Hisashi.” It’s deliberately meant to mirror All for One’s speech in Chapter 1, that starts with “I don’t think you understand, Izuku.” Instead of physical threats, Izuku uses emotional threats against All for One to go for the jugular - which is also something All for One presented as a strategy (see Chapter 7, the UN chapter). If Izuku’s threat is more effective, it’s because Izuku is proving All for One’s own point about taking the effective parts of others’ strategies and adapting them for his own use.
Why was Yagi so accepting of All for One prospectively walking free? It’s because he’d already seen it work with Tenko Shimura. He saw Tenko as lost forever, as an irredeemable villain. While I don’t mean to say that any of the villains are redeemed, Yagi has had a front-row seat to witness Tenko taking up legitimate work, making decent friends, and generally leaving behind his destructive impulses, something Yagi thought was completely impossible and had given up on long ago as a futile and unrealistic dream. He’s started to believe in the power of second chances.
The Second Chance foundation was, in part, inspired by @redrobin-detective‘s fic, “rise up and hear the bells”, and Izuku’s All for One foundation. I might’ve come up with the idea on my own, but reading that fic ensured the idea came quicker. I think I can safely say I took the concept in my own direction, but it definitely came from somewhere!
There’s a number of nods in WGP to various fics by AMournfulHowlInTheNight. The biggest is Rick, who several people noted bore a passing resemblance to Zach from the CWAC series (I couldn’t resist; Australia just seemed right for the role I needed there, and a character like Zach seemed like the right Australian). The astute reader might also have noted several mentions to offering a “helping hand”, a phrasing which was an entirely deliberate reference to A Helping Hand in the Dark. Chapter 7 even has the sentence, “I want to offer a helping hand to those lost in the darkness.”

Would anyone at all be interested in some random trivia about With Great Power?
I have some spare time and there’s a few bits of info that didn’t make it into the story properly. But I could also go play a game or something. Decisions, decisions.
I forgot that the filler episode had the reporter wanting to write a biography of Midori. Imagine writing his reign of Japan in the biography makes me laugh.
Taneo Tokuda has been laughing up a storm himself in between working on that biography with a revised title of “When Supreme Overlord Midoriya Was Young.” Izuku won’t be very happy about that part. Tokuda didn’t expect this to happen any more than the rest of Japan, but he’s very proud of himself for spotting the fact that Izuku was going places.
It won’t come up in the fic, but once things calm down, he’ll probably get an exclusive interview or two with Izuku. He’s one of the media personnel Izuku is more fond of than the rest, terrible biography titles aside. Tokuda kept Izuku’s secrets and is generally a good person. Also, Izuku might end up with a somewhat awkward relationship with the media for a reason not stated in WGP yet, so the more non-awkward contacts he has, the better.
