What inspired you to write NO GOOD DEED? I’m fascinated by young people who speak out for a cause and the reaction that gets from the public, especially on social media. I wanted to explore what would happen if that character ended up at a camp for teen activists. It’s incredible how teens are waking up to the world around them and making their voices heard. NO GOOD DEED is a reflection of that. Which character(s) in NO GOOD DEED would you want to share a cabin with? Either Win, Ashley, or Unity. Win because he’s the perfect, most easy-going human being. Ashley because if nothing else she’s got interesting ideas about life, so she’d be great to talk to when I can’t sleep. And Unity because he’s the only camper sensible enough to have brought Settlers of Catan, and you can’t go to sleepaway camp without a good board game. Things would get very competitive very quickly. What are your favorite summertime books, movies, or tv shows? I’ve always loved the episodes of Saved By the Bell where they all work at the beach. As a kid I was a big fan of summer camp movies, but my favorite was Heavyweights. And of course, the best summer movie ever made: Dirty Dancing. What advice would you give to aspiring YA authors? Take your writing seriously. Almost everyone wants to write a book, but the difference between those who complete a book and those who don’t is those who complete a book actually put the work in. They sit down and write, even when it sucks and it isn’t fun and it’s the most frustrating thing in the world. If you don’t take it day by day and put in the work, you’ll never finish a book. Also, do as much research about the publishing world as you can. Before getting published I read books about getting published. I researched agents and read their blogs. I read other writers’ blogs. I joined message boards. I went to reading nights and asks writers questions. If you want to be an author you have to be a student first. Study and work. What advice would you give to aspiring young activists? I don’t have any advice for young activists. I think part of the beauty of being an activist is rooted in the idea that you’re fighting the oppression of an older, out-of-touch generation. I don’t think young activists need advice. They know what they’re doing. I think it’s up to us—the (slightly) older generation—to listen and learn from them.
