THINGS I NOTICED WHILE WATCHING BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE AGAIN:

Beetlejuice cut Delores’ ring finger off, and while it was originally a fun joke in the first movie, there’s deep implications about that action when we look at it with the context of the second film. Beetlejuice attacked her after she betrayed him. Anyone would want to kill the person that poisoned them, but the fact that he took the time to find her finger and deliberately cut her ring finger off (and ONLY that finger) reflects how much that marriage meant to him. It also symbolizes that he’s effectively dissolving their marriage. He’s cut off the physical representation of their love and taken the ring, which he tries to give to Lydia hundreds of years later. He held onto that ring for centuries in hopes of finding someone he deemed worthy of it.

He calls his dynamic with Lydia a long-distance relationship, which could’ve been a throwaway joke if not for the fact that when he clearly notices how hot Janet is, he never talks to her or gropes her like he did with Barbara prior to meeting Lydia. Keaton said BJ wouldn’t be politically correct, so this isn’t to reflect the current political climate, but rather to reflect BJ’s motivations.

Beetlejuice was jobless at the start of the first movie, and in thirty years he’s built a company for his bio-exorcisms. Coupled with the picture of Lydia on his desk, it’s possible he did this to impress her. After all, she’s famous and rich now. BJ’s gotta step it up, y’know?

Probably overheard the convo between Lydia and Rory and deliberately bugged her at that time, because if he can possess the phone or whatever, he can probably use it to eavesdrop. This can be further supported by how he got rid of the influencers but kept the people that mattered to Lydia present—Delia and Astrid.

We can also assume he overheard the conversation where Lydia said that Rory loves her and that has to be enough because of the panning to a gravestone. BJ has a special fascination with graveyards, even tiny model ones. If he did overhear them, it explains why he used the truth serum on Rory. He’s testing him. He wants to see if this guy actually loves Lydia or if he’s using her, and then he gives Lydia the means to exact revenge on Rory rather than doing anything himself.

Lydia spends half the movie being strong -armed into a marriage with Rory, and in a way, it’s reminiscent of the first movie’s marriage attempt. Rory dangles their “love” in front of her like a carrot, and if she doesn’t want to be alone, she has to accept his manipulation and agree to get married. Yet she immediately offers it to Beetlejuice, only sounding annoyed rather than terrified. And the movie spends a lot of time proving that BJ has sincere motives this time around, whereas Rory doesn’t. It pushes an underlying message that if one of these guys is going to be a better choice, it’ll be BJ.

Despite Lydia having a tendency to back out of their deals, he still helps her first. He prioritizes saving Astrid even before finding his “runaway bride” again.

Casually calls Lydia the love of his life, looks so sincere when he says he’ll make her so happy. Clearly spent those 30 years planning that dream-dance sequence.

He doesn’t seem to care that Lydia’s sending him away. That coupled with the end scene illustrates how confident he is this time around. Lydia is still stuck with him, and even if he didn’t get her this time, he will eventually. But he also knows how spooked she is by marriage after being a snoop, so it’s possible that he’s just taking it slow on purpose.

In conclusion: Beetlejuice genuinely does want to be with Lydia and care about her. His feelings have evolved beyond permanent residence in the mortal world. If anything, if he still wants that, it’s so he can be by her side.

Honestly, all good goth girls need a devilish man, who would solve their problems once and forever with a smile on his face and with a snap 🫰

In Reality: a smart, kind, beautiful and serious woman with millions of problems is looking for a talented showman (appearance is not very important, the main thing is to have a heart) for mutual love and sympathy to the grave and beyond.

I can talk about them for hours, but I’ll just stop right here and watch the film again, thank you.

What do you think about the possible family relationship between Astrid and Beetlejuice?

I think BJ would be a great stepdad for Astrid. It kinda might be why Lydia named Astrid with a celestial-inspired name too. He'd probably annoy the shit out of her, like flickering the house lights on and off while doing homework and hijinks will happen when she doesn't want to study. She didn't really have much of an opinion on him until the wedding, and I don't think she even realized it was BJ who saved her until the "deal she made to save you" scene. The first thing he does is try to make her laugh with his, "By the way, you can call me dad." 

Obviously she gets freaked out in BJ2 because here's this demon literally trying to marry her mom LMAO. I think she'd have to slowly warm up to him first but his crude and brash nature bounces well off her monotone and "0 shits given" personality. Lots of chaos will ensure when they accept each other as father & daughter and will most likely drive Lydia up a wall 😂

Spoiler: A Couple Interesting Details I Noticed Upon Rewatching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

When Rory confesses whata bastard he is, I noticed Lydia is slowly walking over to stand by Beetlejuice's side. Like, she would rather stand with the man she considered an enemy than stand with the one who had been using her.

Both men may be trying to force her down the aisle but the difference is that only one of these men truly loves Lydia. And one of them saved her daughter and was fully ready to have her call him "dad" no questions asked.

And not only did Beetlejuice give Lydia a boxing glove, he gave her some access to his strength because that one punch sent Rory's ass flying across the church.

Oh, yes!

Look at her expression! Not sadness and fear, but growing fury. By the second gif she's huffing. Note Beej's eyes in the first gif, looking at her quickly as she comes to his side.

He doesn't tell her what to do. He acknowledges that rage and gives her something to express herself with. He doesn't tell her to. The choice is hers. The man knows his babe and what she wants.

I love how Lydia sees Beetlejuice inject something into Rory but doesn't realize what it is and does nothing to stop him. She also doesn't yell at him for drugging her fiance either.

She never stopped him from doing anything to Rory even right after saying how Rory loves her and that's got to be enough for her to marry him.

Everything Lydia does or doesn't do when it comes to these two men shows exactly where her loyalty really lie even subconsciously.

I know everyone's expecting a romantic kiss but I cannot help but think that Beetlejuice would be like "Finally! Come here!" and slam his lips to Lydia's. He's being all passionate, but everyone watching from the sidelines unanimously going " EUGH!! " and watching the horrors unfold in front of them is so funny to me.

I love how she voluntarily stands really close to him at the church, while earlier, she was absolutely terrified of his presence and wanted nothing to do with him.

I think she likes him. Whether she wants to or not. 😅

A Psychological Affair Analysis: A Detail I Noticed from the Church Scene

When Beetlejuice reveals his marriage deal with Lydia, Rory turns to Lydia and asks, "Lydia, what's going on?" And you just know what Rory and all the influencers are thinking in that moment- that they're watching some scandalous affair unfold in front of them. The detail I noticed is right after Rory asks his question.

Instead of looking at Rory or answering his question, Lydia LOOKS at Beetlejuice. There obviously wasn't an affair of a phsyical kind, but you would think she would care more about proving to her fiancee that she's been faithful to him. Yet, her focus is on Beetlejuice in this moment.

Beetlejuice only fuels the "affair" idea by saying "Awkward." lol He's just gaslighting Lydia in this scene. He could've been like "Well, we weren't hooking up but I definitely am stealing your fiancee if you haven't picked up on that yet."

Everything Tim does is always intentional, and even if it's not romantic (yet), he purposely had Lydia looking at Beetlejuice who is currently standing at the altar (theres symbolism here), where she should be standing. And we got the line from Lydia where she said Dr. Glickman had told her that she wouldn't be able to move forward in her relationship until she tackles the "one thing that's been holding her back."

She then immediately starts telling Rory about her experience with Beetlejuice. So Beetlejuice has literally been standing between them and the altar for a while now. At least "psychologically", Beetlejuice IS the "other man".

Especially if you take into account Rory thinking the Therapy Room Scene was a dream. Before he said the BJ chant, he was talking to Lydia about BJ being a "construct" because all he understood from Lydia's story is "some guy tried to force me to marry him" so he likely understood it as "Oh, she used to date some weird guy named Beetlejuice who tried to force her into marriage."

Once they're in the Therapy Room Scene, if you look at it from Rory's point of view, he sees Beetlejuice and Lydia being familiar with each other, Beetlejuice magically have Lydia get pregnant and give birth to a baby that looks just like him (Beetlejuice throws Rory a quick smile to make sure he's watching this) and sees the baby instinctively crawling toward its "mother".

"Spill your guts"= Rory worrying about his lies being exposed.

"Figment of your imagination"= Rory scared that his "figment" will manifest into something real where another man will marry Lydia and have her have his baby and beat him to the cash and life style he wanted before he has a chance to trick Lydia into going through with the ceremony.

Lydia has been running from her fear of marriage, but did not hesitate to toss her upcoming nuptials aside to marry Beetlejuice. And I'll mention it again- she looks BJ's way. For help? Most likely. Because how does one explain to their fiancee that she's moments from marrying the "one thing that's been holding her back" from marriage.

The "one thing that's been holding her back" is also the one person that was able to help "push her forward" by helping her save her daughter and saved her from a gold digging boyfriend. As a result, she quit her show "to start living" and to find herself again.

A person wouldn't really be able to consider a second marriage before they find themselves first. It's funny because she was late to her wedding with Rory but was "on time" for her wedding with Beetlejuice. Third time's the charm. Beetlebabes is fated.
