Actually, I'm not.
Our beloved cat, Kameli, is getting more testing on August 4.
Never lose what inspires you.
When writers get together the conversation often turns to "Where do you get inspiration?"
Most say great novels. Some, great poetry.
When I say "Disney animated musicals," you can hear a pin drop.
Then, inevitably, someone says, "When you were a kid, right? Not now?" Because I'm a lady with graying hair and wrinkles.
"No," I say. "Whenever I'm disconnected from the story I'm writing, when I feel too jaded, cynical, or tired, and writing feels like a chore, I watch one of my favorite Classic Disney animated musicals. The reason why I write immediately comes back to me."
"But," someone always says, laughing as she or he speaks, "Disney films are so . . . saccharine and simplistic and goody-goody."
"OH, look at the time!" I will say, and go to the bar for something fruity and fizzy.
There's a reason most kids books today are complete shit.
When people mock what gives you Life, walk away.
Aaaaand Fun Times at yet another Writers Conference. (sound on)
I literally cannot hang out with other children's book authors, because the moment we're introduced they ask me my pronouns and tell me how much they hate J.K. Rowling, and I have to go to the bar, find an empty booth, and drink something potent until my rage is numb.
Bring back "conversation pits."
7 Common Mistakes New Writers Make.

Be hilarious if this was Jesus in his Second Coming, testing people's kindness.
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
My late father was a Humanities professor who taught courses on Greek mythology and philosophy. If my Dad was alive and met Christopher Nolan after seeing "The Odyssey."
Christopher Nolan almost allows colors into his mythical epic shot on 70mm IMAX film. thank god they stopped filming in time.
The entire thing was filmed through a dirty cheesecloth.

I am not this person, but would you mind explaining a little more on your thought process in this scenario? What i pictured reading the ask was someone shipping themselves with a child character (like. Literal child. Walks, talks, acts like a kid.) And am curious as to how this would fit in the "well its fake so it doesnt matter" thought process. (/gen curious)
RE: this ask
because a child character is a fictional child. not a real child. it doesn’t exist in real life. it’s an imagination.
a child character gets brutally murdered and graphically cannibalized in my fics all the time. the point is that it’s not real. doesn’t matter if it acts and looks like a child. it’s a fictional character. it doesn’t have any rights or feelings.
and as long as it stays fiction, as long as the person doesn’t actually harm a real child, then it’s just a fantasy.
I’d rather a person ship themself with a fictional kid if it meant they left real kids alone. if and only if they plan to harm real kids by acting out their fantasy on them, that’s when it becomes a problem someone has to step in and stop them. but as long as it stays fiction, then it’s not harming anybody. and I say this as someone who’s personally uncomfortable with characters who are minors being involved in sexual or romantic scenarios with adults.
if it’s a fantasy where no one in real life is harmed, then I literally don’t care what thoughtcrimes someone has, again, as long as it doesn’t harm any person or animal in real life.
As a professional murder mystery writer I am so sick of this Neo Puritanical bullshit about how writing bad things in fiction is equivalent to accepting bad things in real life.
This is the same thinking many used to ban science fiction and fantasy when I was a little kid (early 60s), everything from fairy tales to Ray Bradbury and LOTR -- because it was believed such stories would draw children out of Reality and teach then to live in a Dream World.
Only retards who lack imagination believe that, in order to write about bad things, writers must like or even do bad things.
If that were the case, then this is a serial killer who eats his victims.
And I, as a murder mystery writer, kill people on the regular.
We writers live
We have the ability to see points of view and behaviors with which we not only disagree, but find repulsive.
We write about them because horrible things are part of the human condition. To deny this, to try to hide the knowledge of it, is to keep people in a state of permanent ignorance. Ignorance doesn't protect anyone from the horrors of the world. Knowledge can.
I personally hate horror movies. I don't watch them, because I derive no pleasure from them. But I know good, kind people who enjoy them. I can't fathom why. But "why" doesn't matter. Because
No one has to explain or justify to anyone else why they read stories about awful things.
If certain topics make a reader uncomfortable, then all they have to do is close the book and walk away. To demand that other people do the same is the mindset of a dictator and a tyrant. Go to countries with that kind of thinking -- North Korea, Eritrea -- and find out how fun it is to be subjugated to other people's intolerance. In some countries you'd be murdered for carrying a Bible.
Here in America we can read whatever we want. Stephen King published a novel with multiple boys having sex with a minor girl. Neil Gaiman wrote about adult men having sex with a minor girl. But I see many who would tear down AO3 because it has "problematic" fanfics are huge fans of those two writers.
I find that the majority of those who bitch about AO3 are under the age of 20. Too young to even support their own asses, and too young to know anything about the real world. They see through the narrow lens of inexperience. They're not in any position to tell anyone to do anything. Being in college doesn't make you an adult. Your ability to think does.
Let's just stop with "I hate it so you should too" bullshit. Don't like it, don't read it. Simple as that.
Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

Happy Willis Carrier Day!
The problem with a lot of modern media I feel is that filler arcs are getting way too thinned out. Everything’s getting so fucking short that filler episodes/scenes/plot often is just disappearing in favour of getting “right to the good stuff”.
That might sound like a good thing, but it’s really, really not. Imagine the Sopranos without the Melfi scenes. Imagine Breaking Bad without episodes like The Fly. You need filler episodes and plots to make sure the audience has time to digest the story they’ve already been presented with, as well as deepening the extant characters and plot points.
And as a writer, I get it. I don’t wanna write filler. I really, really, don’t wanna write filler.
I wanna get to the meat of the story. The cool conversations, the fight scenes, the sad deaths. But the conversations are only cool because they’re bookending or referencing things that happened earlier. The fight scenes are building on earlier plot points. The deaths are only sad because they’re the culmination of a story. Your audience does not love your characters the way you do. And the only way to make it so that they can even begin to try is a shit-ton of filler.
Day 13 of horrendous heat & smoke-choked air.
