“Excuse me, sweetie, could you help me? No one has been very helpful today. I’m looking for my sons.”
Nolan wasn’t used to pet names, especially not while working in here, it stunned him a little as he turned on his heels to face the woman asking him a question and quickly looked her up and down. “What’s their names?”

Eris took a sharp intake of breath as she considered it “Well, some would say it is your brain collecting together things it needs to understand for itself. Some would say that it is a chemical balance that is shifted and sets memories apart. But most scientists would say that there is no actual reason behind dreams. I personally feel that my worries affect my dreams. Why are you worried on the subject?”
Nolan shrugged and leaned back in his chair before reaching for his mug of coffee, “I’ve been having some real fucked up dreams.” He admitted, his British accent drawling heavily as he spoke in a tired tone. “Not that I’m gonna start worrying you with that though, I’m sure you’ve got more troubles with the patients here. You don’t need me in your chair.”
“You know, I honestly don’t know the answer to such a complicated question like that.” Eris admitted, rolling her pencil on the desk a little, before looking up at the other “Sorry if that’s not something that helps.”
Nolan had more been asking himself the question after reflecting on the vivid dreams he’d been plagued with in the night, one after another scenes of his childhood played out before him but with graphic twists and turns. But the fact that someone was listening made his feel less alone. “I mean, I guess it’s a difficult question but it’s really bugging me. I mean, what determines what a person dreams about? Is it what’s happened in their day or past memories? I don’t know. What do you find affects your dreams?”

✴︎ — “ Thanks, ” they smiled. “ I’m Ryan. What’s yours ? ” They rocked slightly on their feet, fingers lacing together as they spoke.
Nolan cleared his throat and looked up, “Nice name. I’m Nolan.” He nodded “Do you want a drink?” He offered, indicating to the refreshments stand.

✴︎ — “ Well you’d be wrong. I’m pretty sure it was written about me, ” Ryan replied. They smirked up at Nolan when he winked, tucking a strand of blue hair behind their ear. “ Perhaps, but I never was one for rules anyways, ” they continued. “ I mean, I probably shouldn’t have performed Lying considering the lyrics, but here we are. ”
“Well, you sang it well.” Nolan nodded, picking up on their seemingly flirtatious retort. “Seriously, you’re very talented. What’s your name, by the way?” He asked, leaning against the garden wall and propping a foot up to steady him as he spoke.

✴︎ — Ryan spun around, grinning, when they heard someone call out to them. “ Which one ? ” they asked, head tilting slightly. “ But It’s Better If You Do and Lying are my favourite songs ever, ” they added. They had grown up with Panic and they couldn’t really imagine themselves without Panic, despite their usual ‘ Better Than Everything ’ attitude. They weren’t sure they would still function without their favourite music.
“Lying.” Nolan nodded, “I like to think it was written about me.” He flashed the other a wink, which was probably mildly inappropriate considering the nature of the song, however Nolan had struggled to create a barrier between what he could joke about at work and what was not acceptable. “Sorry, you’re probably a patient aren’t you? That was wrong of me.” A tinge of embarrassment was evident in his words.

Evelyn almost gave a yip when she was pulled close to his body, it was surprising for her as she hadn’t expected it, Lord she was so introverted. “Okay, I think I’m getting it…” she nodded, trying to keep some form of poise so she didn’t just step all over him. “It’s actually not too bad…” she admitted, giving an awkward clear of her throat, she hadn’t danced like this since her wedding over 19 years ago when she was young and stupid.
“Yeah, that’s it! Perfect.” Nolan complimented her moves, continuing to lead their gentle sways and steps. “You’re a natural.” He grinned, making sure to keep her well supported. “See, can’t keep such a good dancer like you cooped up in the corner all night.” The young man always seemed to ooze a naturally flirty demeanour, maybe it was because he was over confident but another part of it was that Nolan had never been afraid of being judged for who he was and was far past the point of caring what anyone thought of him.

“Honestly, I am terrible…I haven’t danced since I was a teenager…” Evelyn tried to laugh off, but then smirked at him- he was charming and he seemed like she just wanted to have fun. “Okay okay!” she then laughed, moving from the wall and coming over to him as he began to wiggle and shake “Oh my…Well, those moves I cannot beat” she chuckled.
“No bother, love.” Nolan assured Evelyn as he lead her out onto the dance floor, continuing to shake his hips in time to the music, he certainly wasn’t a natural dance himself but he liked to think he didn’t look like a total disaster. He took the woman’s hand and span her in a slow circle under his arm before pulling her closer to his body. “Follow my lead.” Nolan nodded, talking loud enough over the music to ensure she heard him, then began swaying his hips in time to the beat, urging her to join in as his hand positioned itself on Evelyn’s lower back as his other hand held hers in a confident grasp.
✴︎ — Ryan strummed the guitar, fingers finding the familiar chords of Lying. They’d already played through Girls/Girls/Boys and But It’s Better If You Do, and they only really knew the chords for Panic. “ Thanks, ” they grinned, hopping off-stage after they finished the song, carrying the guitar with themselves just to be able to hold it a little longer.
Nolan had found himself in high spirits while watching the patients performing but he was particularly enjoying the individual who had played Panic! At the disco and decided to make a point of telling them how much he enjoyed it, once they were off stage, he quickly followed, a large grin forming on his features. “You played my favourite song.” He called out, hoping to catch their attention.
“Honestly, I’m not a dancer. Your offer is sweet” Evelyn waved off at the others request “Go on, you go and enjoy yourself, I can watch from here…Then I won’t be embarrassing myself” The doctor chuckled, thankful she’d gotten some time to breath from the infirmary and actually enjoy in the Pride Events.
Nolan continued to offer his hand to his colleague. “Oh come on, I bet you’ve got some jive in you. I’ll make myself look extra ridiculous so that you don’t feel embarrassed. No one’s gonna be looking at you if I’m looking like a fool.” He threw her that charming smirk he’d perfected in his early teens, Nolan’s way of getting pretty much anything he wanted. The young Brit wasn’t sure what had put him in such a good mood, but something about the festivities over the last few days was bringing out a positive streak in him. He wiggled his fingertips in a further attempt to entice Evelyn and then shook his hips in an Elvis Presley sort of fashion. “How can you resist this?”

When the orderly didn’t protest it made the situation much more real. Caroline would have to try to explain herself out of something that was inexcusable. No matter how low she felt, how guilty, there was always Imogen and the woman wanted to ensure that she was always around. Nodding, the woman bit her lip. What could she possibly say? There was no way of trying to apologise to Imogen without breaking down but she knew she couldn’t let it wait. “That’s fine.” Her voice cracked as she made her way over to where he had gestured to.
Nolan could sense the woman was obviously struggling with an inner turmoil so took a couple more steps back, not wanting it to come across like he was prying on a private conversation. “Five minutes.” He uttered, crossing his arms across his chest and leaning his back to the cool wall of reception, his gaze never once leaving the woman.
Sitting down, Caroline looked off into space but her trance was accompanied with a worried look. “Are we allowed to call anyone? I really need to call my daughter…” She couldn’t imagine what the girl was feeling right now and it was all her fault.
Nolan looked around, just to double check the woman was addressing him. “If you’re quick.” He pointed in the direction of the phones for patients that were by the reception desk. "I’ll have to stand by, just to check the call is appropriate. Regulations and all.” His British accent made his words drawn out and lazy sounding-- which he couldn’t fully blame on his accent, it was partly to do with his tired demeanour and lack of compassion.
Shane ran shaky hands through his hair, a panic feeling in his chest. All in one day, his house had been raided and he was quickly sent to pack up appropriate clothing then sent towards Glendale institute. “Do they often throw out the shit in your bag that isn’t supposed to be in here? Or they keep it?” In reality, Shane packed a enough clothes for a few days and then other things he would never need in here. “What about my watering can? I might need to water plants or maybe my highlighters; how can there be enough pillowcases in here for everyone?”
“Thrown out, mostly.” Nolan answered, in his brutally honest tone. Escorting the new patients into the building was one of his easier tasks of the day, and he didn’t mind dealing with the ones that were less struggle, by himself. Especially if their only concerns were pillow cases. “I can assure you, everyone’s got enough pillow cases. And no watering cans.” He continued showing the man the way to his room as he began reeling off the rules he’d quickly memorised from having to recite them so often, “There’s a schedule for group therapy sessions, but most therapists have an open door policy, should you need to see them. Your door can’t lock, lights out is 9pm, don’t miss meals. Time outside is usually escorted, don’t even think about losing your wrist band.. they’re a pain to replace. And if you have any questions.. don’t ask me. There’s too many nurses with nothing to do here. Bother them.” The English man had a slight hint of sarcastic humour dripping into his words and hoped the other would pick up on it, otherwise he’d just come across as a bit of an arse and although Nolan didn’t particularly care what others thought of him-- it frustrated him when people didn’t understand his sense of humour.
“I should feel somewhat insulted that my dear twin sister has taken to hiding from me. This is a rare opportunity of actually having time off to check in on her. Is there a bell I press for someone to go and fetch her?” The blonde asked removing her sunglasses and setting piercing sapphire eyes on the other “Whilst she may insist upon the fact she is dead, some of us are very much alive and eventually have places to be”
Nolan wasn’t sure if he was entirely sure which patient this visitor was talking about so he scratched the back of his neck before clearing his throat to ask. “What’s her name? I can do a search to find out what room she’s in.” That was about as helpful as the guard could be, it was obviously optional if the patients wished to participate in the visiting hours, or not, but he still felt bad for people who’d taken time out of their busy schedules to visit and then weren’t getting to see their loved ones.
“This is the first time,” she said, looking at him. “I’m not going to do it again.” At least, with the getting caught bit. “The rules aren’t do the best job, though.”
“And why do you say that?” He challenged, although not sure he was fully awake enough to be making such inquisitive statements.

“Can’t I just stay with you?” Madison said, with a shrug. “I’m not tired, and after all of that I don’t think I will be. I’ve never seen you before, who are you?”
Nolan wasn’t entirely convinced that he was allowed patients in his room but after a moment of internal hesitation, he opened his door fully and leaned against the door frame, allowing her to enter the premises. “I’m the new guard, Nolan.” He introduced himself, bringing his hand up to the back of his neck. “And yourself?”

Hearing the man’s voice did stir Micah for just a moment - in a sea of American accents, it was clear when someone was from his own country, although a different region. Still, it wasn’t enough to bring his eyes up to the figure, as he carefully, quietly wiped the few drops from the table, making sure it was completely dry. “Um, n-never mind. Sorry.” He grimaced slightly as he noticed that he was repeating himself. After rearranging the mug once more to the same place, he glanced up at the man as he knew the other was looking away momentarily. He looked rather dazed as he poured himself a cup of coffee, and Micah thought back to his old therapist’s words on conversations, and how he needed to keep them going if he were to continue to progress. The thought of it made Micah’s heart pang, but he tried to remember the guidelines of a normal conversation. “Um, are… are you okay? Y-you look…” His quiet words drifted off, feeling as though he had just made a hundred mistakes. His restless hands found their way back to the mug, this time just gripping it for its warmth, something which was comforting to the young man.
The young mans timid demeanour was something Nolan couldn’t find the patience for today. Spit it out. The words teased on the tip of his tongue but he knew it’d be cruel and unprofessional, so instead he filled his cheeks with a large mouthful of the bitter coffee-- burning his tongue in the process. Despite the kind nature behind the mans question, it caused a sarcastic laugh to rumble in his throat. “Shattered? Yeah, I don’t sleep more than a few hours on a night.” He shrugged, taking a seat opposite the patient. “Where in England are you from?” Nolan had picked up on the accent almost immediately and it had undoubtedly peaked his interest in the other.
