The substance of story is the gap that splits open between what a human being expects to happen when he takes an action and what really does happen; the rift between expectation and result, probability and necessity. To build a scene, we constantly break open these breaches in reality.

Film score highlight of the day: "The Mission" by Ennio Morricone.
My favorite theme from my favorite composer.
I am starting a series in which I will highlight a composer once a week. So I thought I might as well start with the best! This summer, I'll be traveling with films to Iguaza Falls with friends, so this is a fitting display of Morricone's work as it intersects with my life.
Movies are about making mental things physical.

My new short film: LAST SHOT LOVE
"Last Shot Love is a screwball romantic comedy about Michael, a hopeless romantic who goes to absurd lengths to win the heart of his best friend, Annie." This short film provides the pitch for a feature film adaptation.
Directorial Inspirations: Woody Allen, the Farrelly Brothers, the Coen Brothers
If you enjoy the film, please leave a tip in the Tip Jar on our Vimeo Page!

No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.

Last Shot Love: Progress Report
Co-Producer Matt Rozzell and I are hard at work finishing the Last Shot Love short-film DVD and Blu-Ray. It will have fun extras, like a commentary track and the first sneeks at the Last Shot Love feature film that's in development.
Once we finish the DVD and Blu-Ray, we'll ship everything - along with complimentary T-Shirts, as our way of saying, "Thanks for your patience!" as well as "Sorry it's taken so long!"
After we meet all the Kickstarter rewards, we will give Last Shot Love a permanent online home! Stay tuned for this.
For me personally, I am three drafts into a feature adaptation of a short film (that already took me three years to write and a year to produce), so this journey has really just begun. I have about two to three drafts to go on this feature, and then the production marathon begins!
I never expected to dive this deep into my hopeless romanticism alter-ego, Michael Mendoza. But I am thankful that his journey is not over. I am thankful that Annie is still running, and Collin is still scheming. And I am thankful for the years ahead of me that will be spent concluding my statement on the Young American Hopeless Romantic.
Quality comes slow-brewed.
"You don't have to know how to make a good movie. If you truly love cinema with all your heart and enough passion, you can't help but make a good movie."

"30,000 teenagers will age out of the foster care system this year, and they will be given a check, but that check won't buy them a family, or teach them how to raise their children."

Knox Hamilton graciously provided LAST SHOT LOVE with music for our Teaser. They also played a killer show at our premiere. And their new EP just came out today. And it rocks. So, for all these reasons and more, check it out: THE GREAT HALL EP by Knox Hamilton
"The profession of film director can and should be such a high and precious one; that no man aspiring to it can disregard any knowledge that will make him a better film director or human being."

My first documentary sold over 10,000 DVDs and aired on TV stations on 6 of the 7 continents (still working on Antartica). We initially released the film through Voice of the Martyrs USA, and received a nice endorsement from Max Lucado (New York Times Best-Selling Author). And it was all shot on a $600 handy-cam!
One of the two feature films I'm developing right now is set in Istanbul, and the story was greatly inspired by events surrounding the making of this film. So, there's a good chance that someday I'll look back at my career in this industry and realize that I owe everything to three men who gave their life for their faith -- and everyone else who helped me tell their story.
