NIIA - Hurt You First [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO]
Young Hearts Music Video explained. What is the ending all about??
So we’ve been getting all sorts of responses to the new music video for #YoungHearts. From people crying and calling it the best video I’ve done all the way to outrage over the ending and even indifference. This is all more than I could’ve hoped for, but here’s a breakdown that serves to help answer your questions:
With the music video we aimed to serve a variety of purposes. Conveying a message of love in all it's facets, a stunning visual piece, telling a story that has an arch and within that, social commentary. The idea of young love being impulsive and naive is the backbone and why we chose the wedding scene to begin with. With first love you think it'll last forever, but unfortunately, this is rarely the case.
Our generation now more than ever seems to be under the impression that we deserve to have it all. Our bride is no exception to this. She is childlike in her expectations of what she can have.
The metaphor here being that the protagonist is looking at "stability" and social norms (a longing for acceptance) on one hand, and freedom, self expression and "the unknown" on the other. To display this we chose the cast the best way we could to demonstrate these concepts.
So, just to clarify, the ending is NOT intended as a comment on which sexual preference is "better" or "wins" in the end. Its also not supposed to target any specific group by it's visual messaging alone. I believe love can be found beyond sex, age, race, opinion or religion. Without the ending however, a large intention behind the concept is lost and it becomes "just" a runaway bride story. It ads another important dimension when talking about young love.
Caitlin White at Uproxx summed it up nicely I think:
"[...] It’s a powerful commentary on the fleeting moments of love that end up meaning more to us than the realities of daily life, and how these fantasies can impact the course of our world." - Caitlin White, UPROXX
