Hey guys--just so you know, there are a few ways you can still get our coffee, in the coming weeks. 1) The web store will be open through the end of February. 2) If you're local, email us! 3) We'll be at #singhfarms every Saturday through April (except not this Saturday!). 4) Finally if you're a US Barista Championship judge, then Friday at 330 @harlinglovacki might serve this espresso to you (and if you're not a judge, you can watch the stream: link in our Instagram profile!).
We have some news. In the coming weeks, we're beginning the process of closing the book on Nom de Plume. Some pen names last a lifetime, while some serve only a singular purpose. We penned our nom de plume without knowing what, exactly, it would become. We set out to learn how to operate a business, to roast the tastiest coffee we can, and to see if we could make the business grow. We have explored some possibilities for growth, and have decided that for us, the best course is to close the book on NDP. It has been a real pleasure to roast coffee for you, and we hope you've enjoyed it! And in the process, you've taught us a lot! We honestly couldn't have done any of this without your support. We have so many people to thank in the #phxfoodculture community. We look forward to taking with you all soon. While the book of Nom de Plume is coming to a close, we recognize that it is only a chapter in @nikokovacevic and @harlin.glovacki's coffee careers. We'll keep you in the loop! In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at Singh Farms on Saturdays and at the US Barista Competition next week.
Hi. And we're back. It may be 30 degrees, but I'm out here with @drethehomie and we've got your coffee at #singfarms. Thomas and the 101 'til 1pm! (at Singh Farms)
Ok folks, it's official--we've roasted the very last of our very first coffee purchase: the Kochore is no more, for this season! We're sad to see it go, but glad that you can get the last of it @crepe_bar--on the shelves now! (at Crêpe Bar)
Hey, we have a new stockist. Our whole bean coffee is on the shelf @crepe_bar! We couldn't be more proud. Go and snap it up, and say hi to @shelbinator3000 and @garsdecrepe for us! (at Crêpe Bar)
Coffees are dialed in and tasting great at #singhfarms. Come on out! (at Singh Farms)
#tbt to that time we competed at the #bigwestern. Two accompanying reminders: 1) We're throwing down tonight at the #phxtnt @altitudecoffeelab--come say hi! 2) We're roasting @harlin.glovacki's competition coffee on Sunday--get your orders in, it's a limited edition! 📷 @ryannealcordwell & @dylanbrabec
This coffee is now available on our web store (link in profile!), or you can get it from the men themselves, if you're local (email mail at nomdeplumeroasters dot com). This is a limited coffee; Harlin competed with it, and we've got some vacuum sealed in the freezer, potentially for the National Barista Competition. So, this may be one of the few weeks we can roast it for the public--go get it! (at Crêpe Bar)
Giakanja Farmers' Cooperative Society
Farm: Members of Giakanja FCS Origin: Nyeri, Kenya Variety: SL-28, SL-34, & Ruiru 11 Altitude: 1750-1800 m Processing: Double Washed & Dried on Raised Beds Harvest: January-March 2014
Tastes like pomegranate, gingersnap, and cardamom.
Nyeri, a prolific growing region on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, is well known for producing some of the most complex and delicious coffee in the world. Processing and export practices are impeccable, and this allows the region’s outstanding coffee varieties and terroir to shine through.
This AA Lot, from the Giakanja Farmers’ Coöperative Society, exhibits a classic Nyeri Kenya cup profile, with outstanding clarity of flavors. It comes to us from Coffee Shrub, of Oakland, CA. They say:
Giakanja is a coffee washing station, a wet mill, and what is referred to in Kenya as a “factory.” Small washing stations are aligned with a particular "society" which is what they call a coöperative in Kenya. In this case, Giakanja is part of the Giakanja Farmers Coöperative Society.
Giakanja lies in the Tetu division of Nyeri county, and was at one point in time part of Tetu FCS, lobbying for single society status over 50 years ago. At this point in time, the FCS has nearly 2000 members, growing a mix of SL-28, SL-34, and Ruiru 11. Contributing farmers are spread out around the county, with average altitude ranging from 1750 to 1800 meters.
This is a juicy coffee, with a long, clean, savory finish. We taste pomegranate and blood orange alongside ginger molasses and cardamom.
Harlin competed, for the first time, in the Big Western Barista Competition using this coffee; he qualified for Nationals, placing 5th out of over 30 Southwest competitors. We've got a couple kilograms put aside for Nationals, but the rest is for you!
