Title: Javanese Landscape, with Tigers Listening to the Sound of a Traveling Group Artist: Raden Saleh (Indonesian [Javanese], ca. 1811-1880) Date: 1849 Genre: landscape, genre art Movement: Romanticism Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 112 cm (44 in) high x 156.5 cm (61.6 in) wide Location: private collection
Raden Saleh, of mixed Arab (Hadhrami) and Javanese ancestry, is considered the first major Indonesian artist to have worked in the "European" style. He trained in the Netherlands, became successful in both portraiture and landscapes, and achieved great renown for his animal paintings, particularly those of hunts and fights between beasts. Saleh returned to Java in 1852, where he married an heiress and constructed a palatial country house; during these years, he painted many figures from the colonial elite of what was then the Dutch East Indies. He died in 1880.

🕷 Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium.. Amsterdam: Voor den auteur, als ook by G. Valck, [1705]. Original source Image description: Historical illustration of tarantulas depicted on branches with intricate webs. Two large tarantulas are shown in detail; one clutches a smaller insect in its mouth, while the other is near a nest containing white eggs. Several ants crawl along the branches and web strands, interacting with the spiders and other insects. Surrounding foliage includes green leaves and a round yellow fruit. The composition highlights natural interactions among tarantulas, ants, and other small creatures, rendered with fine lines and muted earth tones, characteristic of early 18th-century scientific illustrations.
