Also, for reference, many of us were too poor to afford professional art programs. We made gifs gping frame by frame, screencapping, playing videos over and over to catch the frames we need, resizing in free software like IrfanView (someone taught me how to preserve aspect ratio because my old icons were squashed), and then cropped and layered in MS Paint. I'd try to make sure I got it perfectly overlapping to the pixel so it doesn't jitter too much. And then, i'd put the frames together in Microsoft GIF Animator (also free, lightweight and easy to download), with it set to optimal palette because the IE palette is dithered and atrocious.

BahraniApps' little vclip and gifcam which I learned of via tumblr (it only stopped spreading because people cried about viruses, but those people were downloading it bundled with malware from other sites, downloading directly from the developer bahraniapps is perfectly safe!) was a huge gamechanger. It's more compressed and not as clean as gifs I made in my old method, but FAR less taxing. x_x

Rarely, I still make gifs a similar way with VLC media player's screencapping option, but no longer by screenshotting a million times and cropping players out, ahaaa.
