at the risk of sounding like a raving lunatic, i think one of my favorite trekkie memes/posts is that one where someone comments on a screenshot of tos and asks if sulu is texting, because it PERFECTLY encapsulates star trek's strange little place at the intersection of pop culture and the tech world:
like listen... 55+ years ago a bunch of actors had to use a mix of existing habits and wild imagination to come up with what they felt would be believable movements and muscle-memory for someone using completely unbelievable tech a few hundred years in the future. like tv had less than ten channels and the screen was a foot across, and they had to go "ok how would someone who's used to a tiny wireless gadget with a screen hold it and use it? how would they talk to a computer? how would the computer sound when she talked back?"
and over half a century later our own tech has surpassed the clunky retrofuture gizmos in so many ways, no doubt inspired by it, that now someone two decades into the 21st century sees an actor in the 60s holding some tiny rectangular plastic prop in both hands and immediately recognizes it as "oh, sulu's texting!" now THAT is a called shot. hell, that's putting your money on a roulette wheel in a casino that hasn't been built yet. i LOVE it. it's so star trek. sulu is absolutely texting.
George Takei on the internet before it was a thing.
in honor of ace week id like to shoutout every asexual who first thought they were bi/pan because they looked at all the genders and felt no difference and zero is equal to zero so they said “huh. must be bisexual” and then shoved their sexuality back under the rug for 3-5 years
As a member of the bi community, ace people are always welcome underneath the bi umbrella
Galaxy brain take, and I’ll embrace it on the merit of being inclusive and fun.

I think people sometimes forget that the Crazy Frog was literally a TV ad spot for a novelty ringtone. Which is such an unbelievably specific bygone era that its easier to imagine it as some kind of internet meme animation.
And then it was so wildly popular that the creators overlaid some of the sound effects onto bestselling 1984 movie soundtrack song "Axel F" and it was SO popular that people just imagine the song was written for the ringtone ad frog. From when you paid for ringtones. On TV.
Wait, it WASNT meme animation?? I thought it was just like that gummy bear song 😭
So I have some news for you about the gummy bear song...
Caption: [Okay so, I do this all the time. Not on purpose it’s just like, I assume that people know? And (laughing) one time, a coworker, Hi (name can’t hear), helped me while I was recovering from nipple reconstruction surgery. (laughing) Turns out, that she didn’t know that I’m trans!? (laughing) She just thought I wanted new nipples!]

Can someone who speaks sheet music translate for me?
I’m sorry but every time I see this post I’ve wanted to add this video and I can’t hold back anymore
That video was hilarious while also making me realize that after having a few years of being taught how to play the piano as a kid and being in band for all 3 years of middle school (first year flute, other 2 years were alto sax), I have no fucking idea how to properly read sheet music.
✨Dragon Poll!🐉
What was the media that first introduced you to dragons?
Inheritance Cycle (Eragon series) (Christopher Paolini)
Flight Rising
His Majesty’s Dragon (Temeraire series) (Naomi Novik)
Game of Thrones (George R. R. Martin)
House of the Dragon
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader (C.S. Lewis)
The Never-Ending Story
The Hobbit (J.R.R. Tolkien)
Wings of Fire series (Tui T. Sutherland)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
For the purposes of this poll, “Harry Potter” does NOT COUNT as a valid answer. If it is the media that introduced dragons into your life, ignore it and please enter the next media with dragons that came into your life after HP.
IF you first heard of dragons somewhere else, please SPECIFY the name of that media IN THE NOTES. I was going to add an “Other (please specify in notes/tags)” but I have apparently run out of available answers. Also it seems I’m only able to run the poll for a week maximum, so that’s how long it’ll run. I hope to have fun with your answers :)

uh oh
alright fuck it. yous have blown up my notifications for three days. put your money where your mouths are.
i’m getting top surgery in january. i need to get £1500 together by christmas to have the full cost saved up. i will be taking 150 pictures of my boobs and printing them as physical photographs so this shit really is limited edition. 50 will be sexy, 50 will be goofy, and 50 will be themed. they will come with stickers and a thank you note. they will not have my face in them. these fuckers will be paying rent in their final months so help me god.
the pictures will be available for purchase from the 20th of november for one month only. details to follow.
if anybody is feeling generous before that time, my paypal is [email protected]. i really sincerely appreciate anything anyone can give, so thank you so much.
to put that big number in context, if everyone who has liked this post was able to donate £1, i would have more than enough to afford the surgery.
hey so like. if you rbd the original please also reblog this version.
SCIENCE TUMBLR, EXPLAIN!
Hello that is a touch lamp and basically it uses something called capacitors to turn off and on. Capacitors in touch lamps store charges and when those charges are altered, they activate an oscillator responsible for turning the lamp off and on.
Humans have what is called body capacitance; we can store tiny electrical charges in our bodies and use them to activate touch sensors (which is why your phone's touch screen works, too, and why it won't work if you're wearing cloth gloves that aren't conductive), for example, altering the charge in a capacitor like the one in this lamp.
The cat doesn't have enough body capacitance to set this lamp off, but it IS conductive enough to relay a human's charge. So when the human makes contact with the conductive bare skin of the cat's nose, their charge travels through the cat to the lamp through their toe bean, activating the lamp. Fur is not conductive, so it won't do it when the human just pets the cat.
This explanation was all very sensible until “toe bean” and I am giggling with pure delight XD
Be careful princess 🌸
