The day started like every other one: get up, brush your teeth, get ready, go to school. Simple as that.
Ailise went downstairs with her backpack on, leaving it at the entrance before grabbing a cookie from a jar on the kitchen counter left unwisely unattended. she was wearing a green shirt and black shorts that day โ not caring that the other kids at her school called her "boyish".
Meanwhile, her father โ Michel โ was sitting at the table with his laptop open, reading some stuff on it that Ailise couldn't care enough to sneak up on.
"hey, kiddo. good morning." the man greeted his daughter.
"morning, papa." Ailise responded tiredly.
Her father went back to his laptop, his expression immediately turning into worry despite trying to hide it (and doing actually a good job).
But Ailise was cleaver and could easily understand when something was wrong despite only being 12. she looked at her dad and finally spoke up.
"papa? did something happen?" she asked calmly and more curious than worried.
Michel quickly turned to look at her, clearly not having expected that question from her โ nor for her to notice something was up. his expression turned serious then. "Ailise, get me the papers on my desk please."
Ailise looked at him confused. "why?" โ "just go, Ailise." he replied firmly as he was standing up.
she obeyed without further arguments.
Ailise started to walk up the stairs and in her father's study, where he spent most of his time. She approached the desk without rush, picking up all the stack of papers scattered around it.
her father always told her not to read them, but curiosity got the best of her. she picked one up and read on the paper: "Shadow Company enlistment". she was about to keep reading butโ
"AILISE!" her father's voice echoed from downstairs.
"Coming!" AILISE responded right after before picking up the papers and carrying them downstairs.
when she entered the kitchen, all the blinds where shut, all the lights turned off except for a small one to know where they where walking, and her father putting USB drives and a laptop all in a small backpack.
her father turned to look at her with clear urgency. "Ailise, give me the papers."
Ailise did as she was told without a word, and her father immediately put them on a table before spreading gasoline all around the kitchen and living room.
Ailise stared both confused and a bit scared now. "...papa? what are you doing?" she asked, her voice small and weary.
Michel didn't respond, he just threw away the empty gasoline tank on the floor and handed her the backpack, putting it on her himself. "keep this close to you, don't ever loose it. protect it with your life."
Ailise just stared at him in disbelief, not getting anything of what he was saying. "papa-"
he didn't let her speak, he just picked up a lighter beforeโ
three loud knocks could be heard at the door before Michel turned to look at Ailise. "GO! NOW!" he pushed her away before throwing a lighter onto the gasoline.
Ailise didn't have by thoughts inside her head, the only thing she could think about was: "why is everything moving so fast?" โ to her, what was happening was too fast for her to comprehend in time, and not much later, she found herself running while gunshots and yelling could be heard. she didn't even notice she was barely breathing because of the smoke of the fire, or that there were armed men who killed her father and where now searching the whole house.
not much later, she found herself hiding in a vent at the train station nearby, that was small enough to only fit her and the backpack through it.
what that little girl didn't know more than anything, is that she would be living the rest of her life alone, scared, wanted by armies, and stealing anything she could to survive.
