My two srepmoms on a Tuesday night
Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.
I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".
So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."
And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.
Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.
Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."
The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"
Why yes, in fact, I do.
Ok some more bullshit for twitter refugees who need to learn the Tumblr Etiquettetm
Change your blog icon. Do not leave it as Tumblr default bc you will be seen as bots. Also helps if you change your URL to something fandom related/unhinged. urls like sarah-x-lynn will cause people to think you are a bot and block you
There's no algorithm. Whatever pops up on your dash is yours to deal with. Unfollow/block people as you please.
Again, there's no algorithm. The content on this site is user-circulated. Abuse the reblog button.
Abuse the tags. If there's something you wanna say on a post but don't want to intrude, use the tags.
Follower numbers don't matter here
There's no character limit on posts or in blog descriptions. You can post the bee movie script 50 times if you want. Go ham
This isn't twitter or tik tok or whatever. There's no need to censor yourself. Outright admit you want to kill a us senator, no one will judge you.
If you're gonna trigger tag something, don't censor it. Don't use like #r/pe tw use #rape tw
Lastly, don't be a dick to people. Abuse the block button for all it's worth.
Half-assing it is fine
I want to touch on this idea that housework only counts if it's done the "right way," which is almost always the hard way. Like, if you only do part of the task or if you take shortcuts or use convenience items, it's somehow not valid? That's bullshit! The hard way is not inherently more virtuous! There's no moral victory in only doing something in a very specific, difficult way. Half-ass it! Do part of it! Get it done whatever way works for you.
Do five minutes and then give up for a while! Bribe yourself! Any little bit you do, however you do it, is good. Try to stop feeling guilt and shame about it and start figuring out what will work in your life as you're currently living it.
There are so many reasons people may not be able to clean how they've been taught is the "right" (hard) way. Disability, neurodivergence, lack of time, never learned how, associated trauma, etc. There is not a single thing wrong with finding the way that works for you and doing that.

guys we’re not being cringe to keep out the twitter users. we’re being cringe to keep out the ALGORITHMS, the CAPITALISTS, the INFLUENCERS. twitter users are welcome as long as they agree this site is UNMARKETABLE
anyone can join the skeleton war but first you must shed the mortal flesh of marketability
already got a blazed marvel post. the adpocalypse is closer than we think so heres your daily PSA
don't interact with corporate tumblr accounts
yes even to dunk on them. i don't care if you have the sickest burn of the century lined up, don't even give them the time of day
the eventual and inevitable fall of twitter marks a change in the advertising industry, and tumblr is unclaimed territory. if we want tumblr to remain the social media bastion it has become, it needs to remain as unappealing to corporations as possible. do not engage. in a marketing strategist's eyes, any kind of attention is good attention. don't "silence, brand" them. don't kungpowpenis them. don't send them hate anons. don't hate-follow them. corporate tumblrs are not a single entity and they will not be harassed off this site. we only have a shot at repelling them because of tumblr's lack of an algorithm. so turn off recommended posts on your dashboard, put it chronological order, and install an adblocker. if you don't seek out these blazed posts and actively ignore them when they happen upon you, the corporations will starve. in this case, the best kind of protest is a silent one
If you see them, block them. And move on.
made a beginners guide for the twitter newbies hope this helps <3
