"Yeah… I mean, for me, it’s about being happy," he said. "If I go to hell because of that, so be it."
Norah hesitated, then answered carefully. "I'm not sure you will. I mean-- life shouldn't be defined by those standards, y'know? Of course you know," Norah shook her head.
"Not at all. Don’t worry."
"I feel like I know you from somewhere …"
"Oh? Well-- uh, classes, maybe? Er, I'm a Junior, though."
"Yeah…" he nodded, biting his bottom lip. "I’m trying not to think about it… you know… in the biblical sense."
"Right," Norah's wide eyes turned to the floor as she nodded over-enthusiastically. "Me too," she tried joking, a fake laugh falling out of her mouth. "But, hey, whatever makes you happy."
"You sure, doll? You look a bit stressed."
"Just a little, uh, lost in my own thoughts. Stressful ones, apparently. Am I in your way?"
It’s far too thin. I can live vicariously through you, right?

“I got a bit of it for cheaper, cheaper than whatever Reischer’s paying since his price spike. Oh, well. Try one of the peer tutors? There must be someone at Westfield who’s fluent— that junior, who smokes like a sad chimney.”
"I'm a peer tutor," Norah sighed, though she gave a hint of a timid smile. "A French one, as a matter of fact. My mom's been teaching me since I was little. My brain's just a little rough at the moment, I suppose. It's hard to write formally when you're used to conversational things, if that makes any sense at all."
"It’s fine," Carolina shot her friend a wide smile. Bringing her pencil to her lips, she pulled her other earphone out. "Have you tried anything?"
"Anything? What, um what do you mean?" Norah's heart jumped.
He reached into his backpack, pulling out the bottle he head and dumping a few pills into his hand, handing them over to her. “You haven’t heard? Frankly, I’m shocked. I’m a cocksucker now.”
Norah smiled shakily as the pills dropped into her open palm. "That's, um, great? I mean, congratulations, I think."
“I can tell you how spent mine, it’ll probably make you feel better. I was mad at Mickey all Friday because I got some discount cocaine awhile ago—which isn’t really something to be mad about, depending on.” She smiled, the French homework a squiggle in her eyes. French was useless. “You can always skip the class, can’t you?”
"Discount cocaine? What is that, exactly?" Norah sighed. "If I skip, I'll get behind. I'm already struggling, I can't do that to myself."
Nah, it’s gorgeous, no worries. I’ve always wanted a head of curls.
You could braid your hair after you get out of the shower and let it dry that way?
“How wicked was your Friday night?” Keegan ignored the part about her headache, just as she wasn’t interested in that. One, two bracelets clinked down her arm, louder than they needed to be. “Do you want to go to Grinders? Coffee always helps me.”
"It was fine," she said, careful not to divulge too much information. "Not sure if coffee will help with this one, but thanks for the advice," Norah squeezed her eyes shut. "I want to sleep for seventeen years, but if I don't finish this French homework, I never will."
"No charge," he said, dismissing the idea. "I’m not a dealer. Consider it an apology for you being the last girl I slept with before I went gay."
Relief flooded Norah's veins, but shock soon replaced it. She felt her Catholic roots shaken to her core. "You-- um, what?"
Can I have your number? The back of your head is ridiculous.
Oh, is there something wrong with it? I was laying down on the grass earlier..
"You look completely lost over there. Is something wrong?"
"Hm? Oh! Uh...no. I mean, yes? I'm fine."
Levi nodded in understanding. “Want an adderall?”
"You have some?" Norah's voice was a little too eager. "Um-- how much for it?"
"Oh I’m sorry about that. I wasn’t aware my music was so loud or that anyone even knew this area of the library."
"S'fine," Norah said, feeling guilty for being so rude to her friend. "Sorry. Just having trouble focusing."
"What? It’s a real thing! In places like Cambodia they’re eating insects and spiders! Little kids go into Spider mounds in the ground or whatever and jab the spiders with sticks to collect them! There are farms for eating them! It’s so incredibly interesting, I hope you can not throw up whilst I search for the documentary.”
Norah shook her head in disbelief. "I can't even imagine a world like that. Gosh, I've never been so grateful to be exactly where I am in my life. I'm not watching that documentary, though. Never in a million years."
