Not sure if people fully grasp it yet but it’s not just the mental illness alone. It’s not just “poor thing she had a mental illness and that was the reason she suffered South Korea needs to be more understanding and supportive of mental illnesses”— it’s the whole industry. The whole industry needs to change. The fans need to change. Because there are reasons why idols and actresses feel this way.
When kids as trainees are getting ingrained in their head that they need to be skinner, prettier, that they can’t have their own voice or make their own decisions, it’s detrimental as fuck. When they’re sexually assaulted and have the public turn on them, when they can’t speak against abuse they go through, or see abuse and see how others can’t speak out which means they can’t either, it’s detrimental as fuck.
When idols right from the get go of being a trainee are being forced to be underweight in order to fit the standard, probably go through all sorts of abuse, no wonder they feel suicidal. When they’re going through sexual abuse, and manipulation, when 90% of idols are underweight in order not to be fat shamed, when they’re under strict contracts that don’t let them live and breathe and be creative... like yes, it’s a hard life being an idol. But it shouldn’t be the life of a slave.
Not to mention, people aren’t even considering the people who don’t make it to being idols. No ones talking about the kids that don’t get their dream, that don’t make that final cut. No one talks about the trainees that commit suicide or the ones that are left behind and used from this horrible system. It’s just so fucked up.
Anyway— I just hope people realize it’s not a mental illness alone that killed Sulli and Jonghyun and Goo Hara, and all the others. The mental illness of being suicidal is not the cause of the suicides here. it’s the system that caused them. And watch out for your faves because even though they might seem happy, rest assured they’ve all been affected negatively by this system and it’s standards as well at some point in their life.

For everyone that needs to hear this
Kpop shouldn't be your only source of happiness. You shouldnt ONLY look forward to going home from school or work or even socializing with other people just so you can go watch videos of your favorite group or go on social media and look at your favs. Shinee has literally been the only thing bringing me happiness since last summer. They're the only music I listen too I HAVE to watch some type of video with them everyday. If I don't get a chance to just scroll through tumblr looking at post about them I feel like I missing something. And the crazy thing is it's not like I just became interested in kpop and shinee. I've known them since 2015 but once I started going through a rough patch and found comfort in their videos I just stayed in that comfort and didn't try to find a new way out of my sadness. But now I'm realizing no matter how much we love them they can only love us back to a certain extent. We have start loving and taking care of ourselves the same way we do for our idols. We need to be able to find our happiness in other more tangible outlets. Outlets where we can actually see an outcome. An outlet that can help you grow. By loving our kpop boys and girls we're stuck. We're stuck in our bedroom and stuck in time just watching and not doing anything, which isnt gonna help us longterm. The idols we love and care about SO MUCH wouldn't want this for us. They're out there living their lives and doing what they love and I'm sure they want that for their fans too.
Yes. This is a very important thing, has happened to me too, and it’s important to understand when your stanning is getting out of hand.
I got into kpop when I was 18, and I turned 20 this year. Yeah, I had a life outside of kpop. Yeah, I went to school. But I was always quite lonely growing up and obsessed over something - from Harry Potter to Percy Jackson to Anime and then, to kpop. I remember reading somewhere that people who hardcore obsess over things are usually lonely (at least a little) and that definitely applies to me.
The thing about kpop is that it is real, when at the same time, it isn’t. These shiny idols are real people just like us, so it’s easy to fill your days following their lives like they were your friends - their ups and downs are real, their pain is real. On the other hand, they are a product created by their company (I hate to say this, but to some extent it is true) with their edited pictures, and practised behaviour, and sometimes even their public personalities are built by the company to appeal to the audience (Renjun admitting that his company came up with personalities for each of the dreamies was just a tip of the iceberg that we can never discover, since it’s been hidden so damn well)
I mean, it’s easy to love them. It’s easy to sympasize with them. They are just regular teens/ young adults with big dreams, just like you and me. But at the same time they are anything but. There is endless mystery surrounding the industry. And for us fans... endless possibilities. You can learn Korean, or Japanese or Mandarin depending on where your favorite idols come from. You can gather money and travel there. Study the culture, watch dramas, and it all leads back to the idols that you love so much, but who will never know you nor care about you personally.
Not me nor the one who posted this at first, are saying that fan culture is a bad thing. Not at all. But you need to be aware of where your heart is - don’t build your life around kpop. The past few years I can say, that I have pretty much grown up with NCT Dream - which is a beautiful statement as a fan, but a little unnerving if you really think about it. I was lonely, the kpop idols were my friends when I had none, so in that way I can say that I am thankful - but I can’t help but wonder, would I have acted faster to get new friends/ find out why I was being so sad, without a place to hide in? If I hadn’t drowned my pain with albums, comebacks and obsessing over a new ship every week, would I be okay today?
