With the last update, I’m finished translating the meta section of Gray Log. For what’s next, I’m interested in translating the two streams from 2016 and I also want to dig out the important bits from the show talk this past november. That aside, I'll probably start working in Gray Log’s character profiles! If you want something in special translated, please send me an ask and tell me. I’ll try my best to do it.

Gray Log: The Innermost Secrets of Manga! (Part 5)
I’m translating the text version of this interview, that can be found here, given that the manga version included in Gray Log isn’t as detailed. For now, I have no intention to translate the latter, as it would be redundant in my opinion.

《9》The importance of a “last hook” in monthly serialization
Hijihara: Having moved from weekly to monthly serialization, what do you keep in mind with the latter?
Hoshino: Personally, I always remind myself to leave a strong hook at the end. After my move to monthly serialization, my editor advised me to “leave a hook so reader wants to read more even after a month.” Unlike weekly serialization, with the short span between issues and the possibility to recover immediately from a bad week, a whole month will pass between chapters. I think a lot of readers forget the story in that time, so I believe you must make every chapter’s content even more intense and interesting than in weekly serialization. In weekly, for example, they may read you next week even after finding a chapter boring, right? But in monthly they could forget to buy the magazine and the like, so that percentage of returning readers decreases. Then in a seasonal magazine, like the one I’m in, it’s even more pronounced… (bitter laugh)
Hijihara: Making the readers wait for the next chapter is a huge priority in your mind, isn’t it?
Hoshino: Exactly. Nowadays, with the development of the internet and the flooding of entertainment, readers willing to wait expectantly for a whole month to read my manga are precious in my opinion. So, I want to make it so they enjoy themselves, even if just for a bit.
Hijihara: Does creating a hook affect your page composition?
Hoshino: I don’t worry much about composition. Even if I managed to draw an awesome spread page, it would be worthless if the story doesn’t hold up. This is what I think, but even one small frame is fine as long as the story stops at a high point.
《10》Without health, you can’t draw manga
Hijihara: You’re also a judge at the Crown Newbie Mangaka Contest, aren’t you? What do you consider when you’re reading the submissions?
Hoshino: I want them to entertain me as a reader first. I had the impression this time around that lots of the works I read were made without really thinking about the readers.
Hijihara: What bothered you in particular?
Hoshino: To give you an example, many works had the main character’s special power as the title, yet the story and the power were completely unrelated once you read it. There were also those who chose interesting subjects and had me looking forward to the ways the story would develop in such a setting, but sadly all of them ended up being predictable.
Hijihara: So, they lacked depth?
Hoshino: Basically. I think they’re putting effort into choosing interesting themes, so I wish they would treasure what will be their work’s cornerstone more. If you have a setting that feels right for you, I believe you must think about it thoroughly, until it gets unbearable. I think that the ideas you reach after changing it again and again, when you have thought about it to the point others couldn’t come up with what you have, will become part of your work’s unique appeal.
Hijihara: Any must-do’s for a newbie?
Hoshino: Building stamina and creating a tidy living environment! If you’re going through serialization, you’ll need the stamina of an athlete. I’m the first to cling to my desk without even realizing when I get engrossed in my job but if you stay at your desk working the entire day you’ll deteriorate from age very quickly. This may be part of the distant future for someone young like you, Hijihara, but the period when you can pull all-nighters and force yourself to get the job done isn’t really that long. Wake up early and do radio gymnastics or go walking so you move your body, even if you hate exercise, and make a habit of eating balanced to keep a healthy body. You should especially drop the energy drinks! Unless you’re healthy, you can’t draw the manga you love so much. I’ve discovered that with my own body (bitter laugh).
Hijihara: I’ll try to take care of my health from today onwards too! Now, to finish, could you give those who’re aiming to become mangaka some words?
Hoshino: What I can say is, please, keep drawing your manga. Currently, I think that many newbies can’t find a company that will publish their self-contained or serialized works. As that continues, the tendency is to feel insecure about the future and lose your self-confidence, but even so, stand firm and don’t give up. Pros and editors will tell newbies to “draw thinking about the readers” constantly, but you won’t really get it at the start, in my own experience, because what comes first to you is the fun of it. However, if you keep drawing, even when it’s so hard you don’t feel like drawing manga anymore, you’ll learn to work for the readers’ sake instinctively. Once you reach that point, you’ll certainly have the ability to make an excellent work. Besides that, you must have strong faith in yourself to get serialized. For example, you’ll surely regret it later if you don’t put up a fight and work hard without losing heart even when your editor says your storyboard is “boring.” Everything will come around if you keep drawing, so keep working hard!
Hijihara: I’ve learnt a lot from your thorough explanations. Thank you for today!
I’ve not posted much (I had nothing to say anyway), but the last part of Innermost Secrets of Manga will be out this sunday. Past week was quite eventful for me, new DGM chapter included, so I ended up deciding to give myself a free week.
Hey I was wondering if you have a favorite/most accurate translate of the lyrics for the 14th's melody? I've found a few, but I'm never sure which are the most singable vs most accurate (in terms of the songs intent/meaning) are.
Hello, anon! (*‘▽’)
In fact, I’ve made a translation of the 14th’s melody myself! The song lyrics are very ambiguous and I don’t think we have enough information right now for me to say that my translation is 100% accurate without doubt, but I tried to be as faithful as possible. In my opinion, this is the closest it’s possible to get to the original intent right now.
As for singing, I really didn’t take that into account when making my own translation so I can’t help you with that.
I could surely take a new look at the lyrics and tweak some things in it to make it more accurate or sound better (hell, I SHOULD), but it’s late where I live so that’ll have to wait for whenever I have the time. I certainly should add a note about a detail that was Lost in Translation.
Hello~ I don't suppose you'd be willing to share the DL for the 227 raws with me, would you, please and thank you? The furigana are too small for me to read and I like to see the translation source/differences ; _; (yes I'm buying the mag but it takes a week or so to arrive)
Hello o/
Sadly, there is no download I can give you. I literally got my magazine (that’s from amazon, and so only works in devices I own) and made screencaps in my computer. That’s as big as they’re getting... I’ll have to ask you to wait for your own copy for that, sorry.
So I’ve been reading a lot of the asks, but my apologies if I’m being to nosy but is something happening to the author? I heard she’s having health issues, but whatever it is I hope she’s ok 😭
It’s fine, anon! I think most people in this fandom simply assume others know this.
She has had health issues for years now, that’s partly the reason why she is in SQ. Crown (soon to be SQ. Rise). I don’t know how much has ever been explained to us readers, as I’ve been in-and-out of the fandom for years now, but from what it know I’m pretty sure she had at the very least an important injury in her drawing hand with lasting consequences in the past.
Given that whatever is going on seems to be chronical, the best we can do is to hope it doesn’t get worse and she can keep working in DGM.
sherilapologist replied to your post: piojitasofi replied to your post: Listen, these...
i actually thought 20 pages was a lot? like if we aren’t getting 10 or less i think it’s fine
It’s definitely an acceptable number, but still lackluster for a trimestrer magazine. I’m pretty sure it’s a low number on average. Anyway, it’s understandable and we got a chapter so all is good.
piojitasofi replied to your post “piojitasofi replied to your post: Listen, these aren’t the best raws...”
Thanks for clearing that up. It’s really frustrating but I understand her. It’s difficult to manage time to finish a lot of pages that will make pacing and story progress accordingly. Let’s hope the next one is larger! (Also hoshino you left me with a different feeling! Not ahhhh I don’t understand but a Oh god please have mercy on them)
We don’t exactly know her situation, to be frank, but it’s clear to me she’s working as much as she can in this and clearly loves her work so I would rather be understanding. And definitely let’s hope so!
(They definitely are in a tough spot, but let’s see what happens)
I’m just your average fandom translator, really. Nothing special. But it would really help if you and everyone else reblogged my work! I really feel that the more people can read this information, the better.
By the way! Please, remember to support the author by buying the magazine in whatever way you can (if you can ofc)! Also, don’t use my shitty screencaps for anything in or outside of Tumblr. I’m sure you can wait to proper raws or even scanlation release for that.
piojitasofi replied to your post: Listen, these aren’t the best raws in the world or...
I don’t want to be greedy but there aren’t more pages right?
Sadly, this is all. Counting the color page (that I didn’t add to my screens as there are already versions of it going around), it makes 20 pages in total.
I understand these aren’t many and it can be frustrating for everyone, but then we got a proper chapter and given how Winter issues seem to be the ones Hoshino skips most often (correct me if wrong) I’ll count my blessings.
The chapter also stars and focuses on both Allen and Kanda, who are between the characters that take the most time for Hoshino to draw, so I guess there was no helping it.
NORO I CANT WITH THE NEW CHAPTER OH MY GOD!!! When you see krory say he doesn't want to meet Allen anymore cause he doesn't want to fight them my heart broke, and then Kanda was being all "you're being annoying lemme put you to sleep" which is hilarious and then THE ENDING WHEN ALLEN FINDS OUT IM GONNA CRY
I understand your feelings so well, anon _(:3」∠)_I expected a quicker cut to the next plotline and not this kind of follow-up, so it caught me totally by surprise.
Yes, I was so glad Krory came back! He’s so sweet (ノД`)・゜・。And Chaoji is with him and this is going to be one grand disaster because you had to combine one of Allen’s biggest fans with his biggest hater. This isn’t going to end well, I fear.
Kanda doesn’t know how to socialize and worry about people in healthy ways and… he… well, compensates as well as he can ( ;´Д`)He’s learning, somehow. A bit. At least he’s clearly determined to do so, given his reaction to Tiedoll’s words.
Also, everyone worrying about each other? It was ADORABLE and hilarious. How Allen is truly scared not only for Johnny, but for Kanda because he knows there is little remaining of Kanda’s life. How Johnny protects Allen and stops Kanda before he does something stupid. How Kanda was trying to avoid talking about Apo and Tim because he didn’t want to corner Allen in this situation. How Tiedoll saw it all and pushed Kanda to talk things so they would stop hurting each other…
AND OF COURSE THE END. I love how they kept Timcanpy’s remains even when it had literally become dust.
Listen, these aren’t the best raws in the world or anything, but I’m going to put behind the cut screens of my own version of the magazine. That should do the trick for those that want to see the raws. You can ask about any scene if you want later, everything will be behind cut and tagged.
