Herbs ‘n’ Flowers

I use these more or less on the daily

Allspice: promotes healing, also attracts luck or money

Anise: help sleeping, no nightmares, protect against evil and protection in meditation

Basil: courage, protection, monetary success

Bay leaves: promotes healing, gain protection, instill strength

Cactus: maternal care, passion, endurance, strength/emotional strength

Caraway seeds: protect against negativity and strengthen memory

Chamomile: help induce sleep, combat curses and spells, aids in good health

Chives: courage, dispel disease and negative entities

Cinnamon stick: aids in healing, raises high spiritual vibrations

Clove: drive away negative/hostile forces, purify the area, produce spiritual vibrations

Earl Grey: bring clarity, bring good working to a space, attain courage and bring strength

Forget-Me-Not: love, remembrance, memory

Lavender: attracts love, induces sleep, bring peace/harmony, promotes happiness and protection

Lemon peel: attracts blessings and luck, attain success

Marigold: passion, creativity (also a natural pesticide)

Mint: fertility, happiness, protection

Nettle: promotes healing, protection, keep out evil

Orange peel: attract love, attain prosperity, attract good fortune

Peppercorn: protection, dispels evil especially when paired with salt

Peppermint: promotes healing, induces sleep

Raspberry leaves: gain protection (raspberry tea is phenomenal for menstrual and muscle cramps)

Rose hips: “love attracting beads”, promotes healing, obtain luck

Rosemary: gain of healing and protection, induce sleep, rid of negativity, drive away nightmares, aid in knowledge gain, and strengthen mental power

Sage: promotes wisdom, gain protection

Sea salt: purification, grounding, release emotional attachments, psychic protection, aids in healing

Spearmint: increases and sharpens mental powers, protection during sleep

Sunflower: sign of adoration, affection

Thyme: attracts good health, purifies space, gives courage and energy, aids in restful sleep

Vanilla: love..lots of love spells, also good in spells for domestic intentions

Magickal Folk Names for Herbs

Having knowledge of herbs and plants (either magically or medicinally) during the Middle Ages, often was reason enough to accuse a woman of being a “witch,” so there is no doubt some of the country folk at the time took these herbal folk names literal.  Chances are, these names were used merely as descriptors to help remember them easier.  Most plants were given names descriptive of their uses and others were given names for something they generally resembled. Spells written by witches in ancient times were often written with such descriptors, which personally i believe to be a form of secret coding.

Here is a small list of “witchy” herb names (most of these are already floating around the community) that you can use in your craft when you create your spells.  This list could be a great addition to any Grimoire and i hope you find them as useful as i do.

“Old Habits Begone” Spell

In order to grow sometimes we need to let go of old habits so here’s a spell to do just that. Suggested by @midnight-shadows-fall

What You’ll Need

Black salt

Black candle

Drinkable sun water

Moon water

Desert Sand

Spray bottle

What To Do

Take your items outside.

Mix your black salt and desert sand together and make a circle around yourself.

Light your black candle in the circle, put your moon water in the bottle, and start spraying inside the circle; say/think “I leave my old habits within this circle.”

Drip black wax onto the sand and salt circle.

Grab your drinkable sun water and step out of the circle and say/think “I leave my old habits in the circle behind me and welcome better ones with the water I put into my body.” and drink the sun water, all of it.

After you are done blow out your candle and dispose of everything properly.

Afterwards let your circle of salt and sand disappear on its own, representing your old habits being blow away from you by the wind.

How To: Book of Shadows

Despite popular movies and television shows, there is no one single book of shadows. A book of shadows, or BOS, is a Wiccan’s or Pagan’s notebook of information. It usually contains spells, rituals, correspondence charts, information about the rules of magic, invocations, myths and legends of various pantheons, etc. Sometimes information in a BOS is passed along from one Wiccan to another (and in a coven setting, there may be a coven BOS as well as individual members’ books), but you can create your own with a little bit of effort. A BOS is a very personal thing, and should contain the information you find most important.

A Basic Method

To make your Book of Shadows, begin with a blank notebook. A popular method is to use a three-ring binder so items can be added and rearranged as needed. If you use this style of BOS, you can use sheet protectors as well, which is great for preventing candle wax and other ritual drippings from getting on the pages! Whatever you select, your title page should include your name. Make it fancy or simple, depending on your preference, but remember that the BOS is a magical object and should be treated accordingly. Many witches simply write, “The Book of Shadows of [your name]” on the front page.

A SPELL TO MEET YOUR SPIRIT GUIDE (ANGEL)

Items Needed: Altar Candle Day candle Offertory Candles 3 Violet candles 3 White candles Crystal ball or glass of water Anise, cardamon, or corriander incense Jasmine, lemon, rose, or sandalwood oils Cinnamon, frankincense, myrrh, or sandalwood bathing herbs Preparation: Breathe deeply and build a ball of protective light around you. While soaking in your ritual bath, meditate on the whole ritual: the steps you will take and what you wish to say to your spirit guide when you make contact. Ritual: Enter the circle and light the incense. With the oil, dress the altar candle and the day candle while concentrating on the purpose of the ritual. Light the annointed candles and state your intent: I am here to make contact with my Spirit Guide, And to acknowledge him or her With a sharp instrument (perhaps and athame), inscribe violet candle #1 with the word "Spirit". Dress it with oil. Light it, direct your energies into it, and say: Here do I light the first Lamp of Spirit. May its light reach out across the barriers from this world to the next. May it make contact with that World of Spirit into which we will eventually enter. Take your censer or incense wand and swing it around censing the whole area around the altar, while rhythmically repeating the word "Merge" and building up energy to focus. Replace the censer and pick up violet candle #2. Inscribe it again with the word "Spirit" and dress it with the oil. Put it back on the altar, light it, direct your energy into it, and say: Here do I light the second Lamp of Spirit. May its light also reach out across the barriers from this world to the next. May it make contact with that World of Spirit and help spread the light, illuminating the passageway between our worlds." Again, take the censer or incense wand and cense the entire area around the altar while chanting the word "Merge" Build up your energy to focus. Take violet candle #3, inscribe with the word "Spirit", dress with oil, charge with your energy, light it and say: Here do I light the third Lamp of Spirit. May its light also reach out across the barriers from this world to the next. May the light from these three lamps blend and grow, dispelling all darkness and lighting the way That my Spirit Guide may come to me and speak with me here today. Inscribe the 3 white candles with the word "Truth" and anoint each candle with oil. Light the 3 white candles in order of 1, 2, 3, and say: Here do I build Truth. As these candles burn throughout this ritual, their power generates nothing but truth In all that transpires between this world and the next. Through these candles there is truth In all communications that come to me". Again, cense the entire altar area while chanting the word Merge Replace the censer and continue chanting. Sit comfortably while chanting, and gaze into the crystal ball, or the clear glass of water. Continue chanting until you feel it is right to let the chant taper off. Continue to quietly look into the crystal ball or glass, not trying to picture anything. Keep your mind blank, so whatever comes will appear in its own free will. Gaze into the center of the crystal. There is no need to try not to blink. Look into the crystal and blink naturally. Try not to notice anything in your peripheral vision, just the center of the crystal. Eventually a face or figure will appear. This may take a long time, or it may appear almost immediately. If it doesn't come at all within approximately 20 minutes, abandon this attempt, extinguish the candles in the order in which they were lit, leave the altar set up, and try this ritual again in three days. You should have results within a month at most. When a figure does appear, ask if he/she is your Spirit Guide. You will hear an answer. You may not hear it out loud, or even see the figure's lips move, but you will be aware of the answer. This is how most of your conversation will proceed. You will ask your questions mentally (or out loud) and the answers will be clear inside your mind. Ask if you have more than one spirit guide. If yes, ask the others to appear also. You may ask anything you wish to know, but it is suggested to establish a connection first where your Spirit Guide may appear to you at any time, or at specific times, so that you can converse with other spirits through him/her. When you have finished speaking with your Guide, thank him/her, then sit for a moment with your eyes closed, meditating on all that you have learned. Extinguish the candles in reverse order to clear the circle.

Summon A Storm

You will need the following items for this spell: 

1 white candle 

1 wand (can be substituted with a crystal) 

1 lighter/match (lighter works best)

Take the candle and center it in front of you. Place the wand next to the candle and light the candle. After lighting the candle, take the lighter (or match)and start at the point of water on the pentagram. Then, follow the lines of the pentagram (going in a deosil motion) naming each element associated with that point. Once you have done that, complete the circle around the pentagram one whole time then continue to make the circle until you come to point of water. Once you have done this, repeat:

“I call out to the energies and forces of nature: Water, Fire, Wind, and Earth. I summon the power of the Water”.

After saying that, grab your wand/crystal and repeat the following: “Clouds of black, clouds of white. I summon the to show thy might. Come thee here and bring thy rain, beneath water, the Earth shall stain. Showest thy light and thy thunder, I summon a storm to the earth under.” It is best to do this spell when it is cloudy outside and/or overcast. This manipulates the energy of the clouds already existing. Though, with enough willful energy, you can make this work on a sunny day.

Note: You’re going to want to know how to stop a storm if the storm you’ve summoned doesn't dissipate on its own. 

You will need the following items for this spell: 

Prep: ground and center (emergency use only!) 

Tools: sword or wand, silver or dark blue glitter 

Corresponding Color: silver or deep blue 

Corresponding Herb (s): broom or frankincense 

Corresponding Elements: water and air 

Corresponding Crystal: hematite 

Reason: when a major storm is approaching

Take some frankincense and a hematite stone, place them on a pentacle you've drawn on the ground (with your sword or wand). Place the tool of your choice in the middle of the pentacle and while holding the stone in your hand say:

“Oh, Spirits Of Great Water Power Ease Your Flow This Desperate Hour Save Mine Most Dear, Oh, Mighty Spirits, Take The Floods From Here Let The Sun Shine Here.

Hear my thoughts, hear my pleas, Mother nature I call on thee, Stop the rain, I ask of thee, Hear my plea so mote it be.”

Than take the silver or deep blue glitter and sprinkle it around the perimeter of the pentacle and let some fall off of your hand into the wind. Leave the stone as an offering to the elements and the Goddess.

Casting a Circle

This is only one method of casting a circle. I like the structure involved in this and this is how I personally like to cast my own circles. Not everyone uses circles or think they’re necessary. 

athame/wand - can be optional but I love tools <3 quarter candles (optional)

Cleanse the area using a broom or visualization

Light the Quarter candles (optional)

Using your Athame, circle the area and visualize your circle manifesting itself then face each direction with your Athame pointed, directing the energies of the directional elements

Face North and say:

I call to the North Spirits of Earth I ask of you To guard and protect my Northern side

Face East and say:

I call to the East Spirits of Water I ask of you To guard and protect my Eastern side

Face South and say:

I call to the South Spirits of Fire I ask of you To guard and protect my Southern side

Face West and say:

I call to the West Spirits of Air I ask of you To guard and protect my Western side

When complete, face north again with your Athame pointed towards the sky and say:

I cast a circle and erect a temple, A place between the worlds, Where I may work my will So mote it be

Conduct whatever ritual or spell you have planned
