HANA EP Review by Kelsi Yamada
After touring the world opening for Purity Ring and Grimes with only two released songs, singer and producer Hana Pestle released her first EP as HANA on March 25, appropriately titled HANA. With personal lyrics alluding to a bad breakup and fresh production skills, HANA made her EP one to remember.
The first two tracks were previously released as singles before HANA began touring. The two singles were co-produced by Pestle’s boyfriend, Mike Tucker, AKA BloodPop, who co-produced Justin Bieber’s hit “Sorry” and numerous Grimes tracks.
The first of the two, “Clay,” is a catchy pop track with light instrumental aspects and sweet vocals, contrasting the song’s intent to call out an ex and show how the breakup gave her the opportunity to grow. “Avalanche” is a track about the struggle of being a people-pleaser, with a synthy beat and vocals that start slow and become strong and powerful, as an actual avalanche.
“Underwater” released a couple of weeks before the EP, and differed greatly from “Clay” and “Avalanche.” The darker and dreamier third single’s light amount of instrumentation sets the mood for HANA’s chilling voice, which sings lyrics made to haunt.
This left “White” and “Chimera” to be the two tracks to be released brand new with the whole EP. “White” is a softer track with laid-back electronic beats and soft singing that complements the instrumentation. “Chimera” serves as the closing track, with dark, slow vocals in a broader range that will leave listeners with chills. “Chimera” takes a shift toward the end and closes the EP with old-school sounding beats and a distant saxophone.
The HANA EP is a showcase of Pestle’s ear for beats and production, songwriting skills, and vocal capabilities, and is a strong introduction to HANA. It is available on iTunes here https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/hana-ep/id1084326251, and is available to stream on Spotify.
