Great Pizza in Boise

Front Door: 2 out of 8

The pie and the flop... so... where to begin... i dont know Italian, but if there’s an Italian word for “quesadilla” then this pizza was an example.  NO ... SAUCE ... AT ... ALL ... so much sadness in one pie... all crust and cheese (and the oregano in the cheese was a nice touch). The crust was more “flatbread” than “pizza” ... the cheese was tasty, thick... heavy... stringy... all the things you’d want in a cheese... but we came for pizza, not quesadilla... the service was great, the staff are awesome... the beer selection was really good. But the “pizza” ... nope... SURE... we know, “but get the other toppings” but, as we’ve stated before and the longer i do it, the more i stand by the decision: the foundation is crust, sauce, cheese... all in balance... otherwise, it’s an Italian Open Face Sandwich...

Smoky Mountain: 5 out of 8

So weird... we were both very “MEH” about this whole visit. BUT we had committed to hitting all the pizza places in Boise, and Smoky Mtn is on the list so... off we go... and this is where we were so pleasantly surprised: generic crust, generic sauce, generic cheese BUT perfectly balanced = a pretty darn good cheese pizza! Also, in the photo above, we capture what Nash refers to as “The Flop” - the way the slice bends when held correctly (and this is why Chicago Pizza is really a casserole... but i digress). Great “FLOP”! There was a lovely Lake of Grease in the center, the crust was crispy on the exterior, soft on the interior. What we realized was that it’s not necessarily about the “greatness” of the individual components, but it is the balance of those components and the bake that is key. SO, very low expectations, super pleasantly surprised... well done and really worth the price.

Americana Pizza: 8 out of 8

YES... and we both said “HOLY SHIT!”  This was so close to home both Nash and i got all nostalgic about the pie... memories of our favorite places from home... Price was SO reasonable, and they delivered to Boise Brewing (you cant dine in... BUT they deliver to most of downtown Boise).  Everything from the phone call to the Skater Dude delivery guy just outlined who you are working with... that take their pizza SERIOUSLY!  The Crust / Sauce / Cheese balance was perfect, throughout the whole pie... and, key to this was the slight “char” on the cheese... and the crust was outstanding... and we can not over state just how excellent the sauce was... REAL pizza sauce... smelled great, tasted amazing... just worked it.  Like we said, 8 out of 8... and we’ve both ordered it for home since (honestly, we’ve had it no fewer than 4x at home since then)... a freaking favorite!

Flying Pie on Broadway: 2 out of 8 slices

2 out of 8 slices... 

you know... i argued with Nash when we talked about doing this.  “Just cheese pizza? REALLY?” but he was emphatic that it was the only way to really test the quality.  “A good building must have a good foundation - same with pizza.” Fine... whatever bro... and yet, as we go out, i realize he is right... PEOPLE... SAUCE... take a look at the photo above... THERE’S ... NO ... SAUCE ... and what WAS there tasted like tomato paste... good and ample cheese, but even the copious amount of cheese was not enough to cover there... the crust was really “bready” in the center and good at the end.  Atmosphere was good, really fun place, really good beer.  BUT the pie itself... we started at 3 slices (kindness) but it fell quickly to 2.

Red Bench Pizza: 6 out of 8 slices... 

The best indicator of this pizza happened 2 days later when Nash messaged me with “DUDE, that SAUCE!!” That says it all... it was outstanding... We got The Italian (cheeses, sauce, crust)... pretty standard.  Outstanding... seriously... really impressive, a little char on the crust... but, as Nash said, THE SAUCE!! You could taste all the spices, very “Italian”, and it left a great impression.  The crust was excellent, and the cheese was not overbearing.  As Nash says, because he’s fancy, “ The cheese to sauce to crust ratios were perfect.” Whatever... for me: it was NOT shitty! Oh, our ONLY ding on the whole thing was the portion size for the price... a little pricey for the size.  We had to order a second pizza (we got a pepperoni, and it was also outstanding)...  Really impressed overall!

NORTHEND PIZZA: 1 slice...

Normally, i really enjoy Northend Pizza... until i had the cheese pizza... the sauce was thinly spread paste, the cheese was like an evenly laid out string cheese... BUT the crust was ok... this was pretty sad and disappointing... Nash’s face was just like this... in general, “Shitty”.

Nash & David... 2 east coasters, moved to Boise... we are in search of the best pizza in town... we will only judge based on Cheese Pizza as it is the purest of all the Pizzas... that way we can check out the sauce, cheese, and crust... not a bunch of crazy ass toppings that might conceal a shitty pizza... scored on a 1 (shitty) to 8 (perfect) slice rating...
