The Witcher on Netflix: Yennefer’s costuming

Kudos to EVERYONE on Witcher responsible in one way or another for the costuming, but especially those involved with Yennefer’s character design from concept to execution. I love that after her ascension, a lot of her wardrobe (mostly when she and Geralt were apart) was latticed, tendrilled, or cut out, regardless of whether it was revealing or concealing. Not only does it show a sense of character, how Yennefer uses visual aesthetic to leverage power, but it also gives off a strong visual allusion to reigns, tethers, and harnesses, as if leashing, restraining, and precisely moderating her inner power…

Right up until the siege of Sodden Hill. Yen’s corded rope dress doesn’t look like much, until the power comes through and the costume takes on a life of its own like pulsing veins descending down her neck and across her entire body. It really lends a structural, muscular, powerful look to a long, lean frame. The texture of the ropes illuminated by warm, dim red light is perfect imagery for tensed blood vessels.

Costuming was one of the things in this series that really elevated the experience for me.
