hey there buckarooni. need american sitcom Psych (2006) fic recs?
well sit your dang booty down because here's marlena's (mostly shassie) psych fic recommendations.
note that i can't handle smut, so you're not gonna find any of that in these here parts. if there's a work you're itching to kill me with hammers for not including, i beg of thee: make a rec list of your own!!! it feels like five billion years since i've seen one floating in the wild, and i'd love to see them flooding the ecosystem once more.
list under the cut, snip snip snip
Non-shassie:
Let the Ice Melt by starfish_spencer (complete) (6.5k words) | A flashback to Lassiter's childhood detailing the traumatic event that gave him his fear of snowglobes, complete with a kinder extension of the scene from the episode. Very in-character, very well written, bonus incorporation of real-world research! I'm biased towards this one bc little kid Lassie is nonverbal, a favorite headcanon of mine :P
Impressively (Alter)Average by aba_daba_do (complete) (240k words) | What if Shawn Spencer actually had been psychic the whole time... but only realizes after the events of "Deez Nups"? How would the rest of the show play out? How about the first film? Well here's a brilliant take on it. Scary-good writing from a clear professional, oodles of Shawn whump, immense character accuracy, and that indomitable polyclue friendship! Also check out the in-progress sequel tackling movie two.
Blahaj by Iceee_riceee (complete) (4k words) | Shawn and Gus get into a bickering match after Gus learns how his best friend got his hands on this iconic shark plush. No-stress length, descriptive writing, and dialog as funny as it is character-accurate (which is to say, very)! Fun fact: I beta read this one in-person!
One Undead To Another by ObsidianCreates (incomplete) (43k words) | Shawn barges into a crime scene alone... and finds himself turned into a vampire. Good thing his friends are ready to support him and all the other supernatural nonsense opening up around them, because Shawn's not so sure how to manage it all. Fun, eclectic, witty, and in love with the Psych universe. There's an incredibly moving scene involving a series of ghosts that permanently sold me on this story. Sadly, at the time of writing this, this fic hasn't seen an update in over a year, but everything that's there so far is still delicious.
The Impulse Buy by Tardisgater (incomplete) (423.5k words) | In a universe where slavery is an accepted, integrated aspect of society, an 18-year-old Burton Guster — furious at the normalized injustice around him — finds himself rescuing an enslaved Shawn Spencer from an abusive situation, and makes it his life's goal to break through the dehumanizing programming Shawn has been subjected to, and befriend him along the way. I cannot adequately put into words how genuinely amazing of an experience reading this story is. It's a beautifully, realistically slow burn of watching a broken Shawn Spencer heal into the Shawn Spencer we know and love, alongside a young and impassioned Gus coming into his own in a world whose injustices enrage him. This fic made me giggle, made me cheer, made me bawl my eyes out. I know the subject matter is heavy, but if you can stomach it, I cannot recommend this work enough. As of writing this, it's still being actively updated.
Mirrored Lives by redwolffclaw (complete) (45k words) | Through some unexpected magic, Shawn Spencer and James Roday Rodriguez switch places, each now having to navigate a real world gone fake and a fake world realized, respectively, in the hopes of getting home. A continuous demonstration of immense love and understanding of the show and the people responsible for its creation alike, complete with both cross-universe weirdness being wielded in fun silly ways and reflections upon what it means to be someone else's narrative. A fun romp that reminds me how much I love being a fan of Psych.
Shassie:
Shawn And The Real(er) Psychics Of Santa Barbara ; Occult Classic Murder ; National Lampoons Deadly Vacation by NotTithonus (complete ; complete ; complete) (47k ; 39.5k ; 63k words) | After getting struck by lightning, Shawn gains genuine psychic abilities. Over the course of three murder cases, his burgeoning powers and burgeoning relationship with a certain head detective develop into realities just as exciting as they are unforeseen. This trilogy comprises my favorite Psych fics. Ever. Of all time. Beautifully paced slow burn, engaging depiction of true psychic powers, Shawn Spencer whump, a Juliet + Gus B plot, and the complex reality of being a real fake-fake psychic, all delivered through three amazing mysteries! The author returning one day to write another entry into this series would be a gift no god could ever dare live up to.
one more chance (to get it all wrong) by criticalyaclaimed (complete) (7k words) | Shawn takes the opportunity to undo his biggest lie when Lassiter is struck with a bout of memory loss. A clever idea executed cleverly, character-accurate dialog, and Lassie moments that will dribble your heart around like a basketball. This story achieves the difficult task of portraying well-balanced Shawn Spencer wrongdoings.
The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself ; From Beyond the Morgue ; Empire State of Murder by nixajane (complete ; complete ; incomplete) (43k, 43k, 50.5k words) | Two-and-a-half case fics (Shassie included) that get more and more crazy as they go on. Pants-pissingly hilarious, show-accurate dialog, engaging and intricate mysteries, charming original characters, and a rapidly developing Shawn/Lassiter relationship that feels ornamental only because the cases themselves are so incredibly well-written! The third one gets batshit insane in the best way possible, but has tragically gone without update in well over a decade :(
The Many Uses of Carlton Lassiter by Michelle_A_Emerlind (complete) (39.5k words) | Lassiter skips town without a word following his divorce, and his coworkers — Shawn especially — won't stand for it, reopening a cold case of his just to coax him back home. Who knows: maybe the lovelorn feelings that drove him away will actually be what gets him to stick around. Narratively airtight, equal parts angst and comedy, potently sweet moments and developments that will make your heart explode, and intelligently-constructed character motivations throughout. The platonic ideal of a Shassie fic, in my personal opinion.
All Bets Are Off by unadrift (complete) (1k works) | Out of nowhere, Shawn strolls up to Lassie and kisses him right on the lips in broad daylight. Bite-sized, funny all the way down to the individual word choice, and just truly in line with Psych's sitcom ways! This is the kind of comedy writing I strive to emulate.
The Road to Tikihama by unadrift (complete) (15.5k words) The night after "Tuesday the 17th", a chance meeting between a Shawn and Lassiter both failing to sleep has the former dragging the latter into a flurry of antics neither could have come close to predicting. Hilarious and eclectic on a molecular level, ripe with sitcom goofiness, and quaintly endearing in its nonsense. The reading experience tastes like electricity on my tongue. Like with the previous work on this list, this is the kind of writing I strive to emulate.
Cursed by MeganMoonlight (complete) (2.5k words) | A cute quick fic about how Shawn handles Lassiter getting turned into a rooster! I don't have much to say outside of how fun this one is; I just really adore animal transformation situations — especially when it's Lassie getting transformed — and there's not much of it in Psych's current body of fanfiction.
A Medieval Werewolf in California by Tardisgater (complete) (49k words) | In a universe of medieval fantasy, gruff werewolf Carlton Lassiter finds himself asking for psychic Shawn Spencer's hand in marriage in the hopes that his magic could save his pack from their prophesied decay. Insanely dedicated levels of historical research done for the sake of accuracy, werewolves, begrudging romance, strong narrative focus, Lassiter with a beard, and Woody's beloved presence! A true feat of AU storytelling; I especially love Juliet and Gus's presence in this universe.
ok before this post goes on i gotta say that in 2007-2012 carlton lassiter had a blog on the psych website. saying this first so not all the notes are just "HE HAD A BLOG???" ill post a link in the comments
anyways shout out to the three most revealing paragraphs about lassies childhood ever
Ok but why are there so few Psych fanfics where Shawn gets to actually be smart?????
Like, in the show they kept talking about how he was actually super smart, and he ACED that one police/detective test thing when he was a teen???? And they just????? Never bring it up again?????
He also worked like, a million jobs!!! I wanna see a fic where they’re investigating something and they bring up a theory on how someone died, and Shawn immediately shoots it down, Lassie fully prepared to deal with him spouting stuff about "vibes" or something, but he suddenly goes on a whole informational rant, with sound logical reasoning, and when they question how on Earth he knows that he’s all, "what???? I worked at a (insert random career choice) for like, almost half a year????"
And when Gus points out that he never heard about that he’d mention it was when he was in some random state, and Gus is just like????? "Shawn???? That was when you were 19???" Or something
And Shawn’s just like, "And your point is???"
Where is the bafflement!!!! Where is the chaos!!!!
I wanna see Shawn completely Fail at understanding what actually would count as a normal human memory! Utterly clueless as to why everyone doesn’t get that of course he learned to speak another language fluently???? He was there for like, a Whole Month????
rewatching scary sherry and the scene at the end where shawn gus and juliet are eating and giggling together and lassiter is just standing there and watching and as he turns to leave shawn calls to him and throws him a fortune cookie and they’re all looking at him and smiling…………serving such insane “slowly convincing this man to join our polycule” energy the four of them were truly doing it like no one else <3
carlton hooking himself up to the lie detector solely to show shawn that he was dead fucking serious when threatening him with murder if he hurt juliet was absolutely insane and extremely underrated bestie behavior btw. shovel talk but he is not in the least bit being hyperbolic he may not be able to express affection properly but he WILL empty his clip into you if you touch one hair on his beloved partner’s head. and there’s a polygraph to prove it.
