This was the best place he could think of to try his new appearance. Hunter’s Moon. A bar surrounded by Downworlders and there were Shadowhunters coming in and out as well. He ordered a non-alcoholic drink. “Here goes nothing.”

Elena’s gaze scanned his face, and she allowed her magic to tap further into him: hatred, Valentine. That was good enough of a reason.

“With great risk, yes”, she said carefully. “The easiest and safest way is have a warlock constantly recasting a spell with the effect of the desired Rune, but you’d need a truly powerful one that you’d have access to frequently. Or, you can merely have the warlock recharge the Rune. But if you want it done all by yourself, you’d need to keep away from combat and extraneous activity as much as possible, from injuries. You’d need to be in optimal condition at all times, both in body and mind, so: lots of sleep, lots of calories, lots of healthy food, yoga or something else that would exercise your body but not demand too much of it. That would be the most dangerous option, however. Should you get stabbed or something of the sort, the Rune would most likely stop working, to preserve your strength. Not to mention Runes have angelic power - that is not something to be meddled with, and who knows if it would have any side effects, or what they should be.”

Jace listened carefully without interruption. He had to take in everything she said. His whole plan depended on him being able to keep up this rouse for long periods of time. What he was being told wasn’t promising. While he had no problem with warlocks or their magic, having to depend on them would prove to be a hassle, especially if there ever arises a situation where he wouldn’t have access to it. “When he was raising me, Valentine used to leave me alone a couple times a week. But the rest of the time he was with me shifted as Michael Wayland. We trained, we even went on hunts. Would that be enough? A break every few days?”

Self Para: Drastic measures

This was probably the worst plan he has ever come up with. 

A small voice in his head kept telling him that, a voice that oddly sounded a lot like Alec. Jace shrugged it off as he had been since the idea formed. What else choice did he have? Looking for Valentine and getting back the Mortal Instruments were a priority. A little risk was worth it if it meant protecting the whole Shadow World.

But he had to be smart about this. That’s why he had Dutch try to look up someone up. A boy, they had met briefly as kids while he was being taken to New York. Jace didn’t know much about the boy except that he was being transported to an Institute as well after the death of his family. Oh, and his name: Sebastian Verlac. 

Hopefully, he was still at the London Institute. That was where he was being sent eight years ago. Once he had enough information, he would be able to finale get into the Institute as Sebastian. It wouldn’t be impossible to sell the idea that he was coming from another Institute to help with the search for Valentine. It had to be the number one priority for the Clave.

It was a risk, impersonating a Shadowhunter. If anyone has ever met Sebastian or has heard about him, he could get into a lot of trouble. On the other hand, it was almost impossible to impersonate as a Shadowhunter who didn’t exist. There was no way for anyone he knew to hack into the servers of the Institute to add a random Shadowhunter, not without risking them as well.

Just like following Valentine’s orders were his risk to take, this would be too. He’s already involving too many people by going over this with Dutch and Elena. The fewer people who knew, the less chance of him getting caught. It made me uncomfortable to keep this from Alec and Isabelle but it was for their own good. They’d try to stop him from doing it. That would just waste their precious time arguing on something that he was firm on.

Besides, he was already so close.

Dutch’s contact hasn’t managed to get much information yet, but she was given one thing.  A picture of Sebastian. He didn’t really remember him from when they were young but there were similirities between the boy he had seen and the man in the picture. It had to be him. They had this for over a day now. The rest of the information was supposed to get to them within the week but Jace was far too impatient for that. He had to do something now. 

He had an idea. It was again, a stupid one but at least he wasn’t planning on going to the Institute...yet. He had been scrutinizing the pictures since they got them. The dark hair, the facial features, the runes...It was time he actually use the shape shifting rune. He still had his old one from when he had visited Isabelle. With a little focus, Jace he ran his stele over the rune. Going over to the mirror, Jace at his new image. “Okay. I admit it. This is crazy even for me,” he said to no one.

But he wasted to much time already. This plan couldn’t fail. Jace grabbed his phone and jacket, before leaving the room. He had to figure out how long was he able to hold this form. What better way than to walk around the street of New York for a little while?

“All day. Everyday.” He knew it could be done. Valentine had done it for 10 years. He just wasn’t sure if depending on his own strength was a smart move.

“That’s borsht”, Elena informed him as she pulled on her cat paws mittens. The next day would be the Fast of Esther, and although Elena no longer followed all the Jewish traditions, she did try to follow the holidays. The borsht would be her hearty dinner, but she had other food options. Mr Wayland didn’t. “Well, go on. Don’t be shy.”

“Borsht.” he repeated. It just looks like soup to him but he probably shouldn’t annoy the warlock he came to ask a favor from. “Is there a way for me to use a rune’s power for a long period of time without completely depleting myself of energy?”

“I’ll make a note of telling them to slacken the rules. This should make them go harder on intel”, Elena said acidly. “On the contrary – that is precisely the person I should offer food to. You’re welcome to stop by for lunch whenever you’re free – I usually have my meals at home anyway.”

He didn’t need to be told twice. Well, three times. Jace went to the fridge and took out the first thing that looked appetizing (everything looked appetizing) and sat at the table to start eating. It felt so good to not have to eat something out of a wrapper or a take out box. He swallowed down a few bites of his food before talking again. “As delicious as this is, I didn’t come over to raid your fridge. I need to ask you something.”

“You know when my father hired you, I don’t think this is what he had in mind.” Jace whined as he sat on the kitchen counter. He would much rather be outside shooting some hoops. Instead he was inside with a tyrannical nanny.

“I was hired to keep you safe. I won’t be doing my job if I let you die of a heart attack at 19.” 

Jace scoffed. “Says the person who eats fast food like there’s that’s the only thing left in the world.”

“And when someone gets hired to be my bodyguard 24/7, they can bully me into cooking too.”

“Ha!” the teen exclaimed as he jumped off the counter. “So you do admit that you’re bullying me.”

Dutch smirked. “I thought that was a given. Now come on. The onions aren’t going to chop themselves.”

“You know, you’re cute. You’re very cute.” Jace wasn’t aware of it but his words were slurring. “And nice too. Who else would pick up his drunken -hic- roommate from a party 20 minutes away?” 

“At least you know you’re drunk,” he heard Raphael say. At least he think he did. Words were kinda hard to hear right now. “Bed.” Now that was definitely something he heard his roommate say.

Jace giggled. “Why are you talking about bed? You’re ace.” His eyes widen in realization. “Unless you want to cuddle. I don’t mind cuddling. I especially didn’t mind last year. I had -hic- a huuuuge crush on you. Did you know that? Huge.”

Suddenly he was falling back. He didn’t have it in him to panic. It would have been a waste of time though because whatever he fell on was soft. Really soft. And very comfortable. It took him too long before he realized that he was on bed. His bed. Hey! How did he get here? 

Oh right. Raphael. Raphael who was leaving. He couldn’t leave not with what he knows.

“Hey Rapha. Don’t tell yourself about what I told you. You’re already too much of a smug- hic- bastard without that knowledge,” he mumbled as he fall asleep.

Simon was the wrong person to call. He was Clary’s best friend before anything else but he didn’t really have anyone else to call. If he was lucky than maybe Simon will be able to shed some light on his girlfriend’s (his ex???) behavior today. Not to mention that thing he saw at the basement of the Institute. No, no. That was a hallucination.  Jace barely let Simon greet him before talking. “Is something happening with Clary? Is she with someone else? Because if she’s not interested in this relationship I wish she would have told me earlier. I would have stepped back but to just play me like a fool-” 

His breath hitched. How could she do this to him? He thought they had something real. Was he just too blind to see?

Simon took advantage of that silence. “Jace calm down. No one’s cheating on you. Clary was here freaking out because she has no idea why you broke up with her.” 

The blond scoffed. “Yeah right. She was there in the basement with him and she’s the one confused.”

Jace could practically hear the sigh that Simon was no doubt suppressing. “Can we all just talk? Tomorrow.”

No. At least that what he wanted to say but his heart ached of want. And he deserved an explanation. “Fine. Tomorrow after the morning rush.” He hung up without waiting for a reply.

Clary had been training enough, and today she just wanted to let out a little of her growing stress “drawing it is.” she murmured to herself picking her pad up. 

Jace was never one to be able to stay indoors for too long so despite his better judgement, he left the motel room. Bumping into Clary wasn’t exactly part of the plan but after all these months, he could barely stop himself from checking up on her. “I didn’t realize stress drawing was a thing.”

“I am not hiding”, Elena pointed out, closing the door behind him. Sensing his reaction to food, she walked went back to the oven to check on her cookies as she casually added, “There’s a lot of food in the fridge if you want any.”

“Fair point. Guess the Clave should do something about how easily a fugitive can get information.” But they won’t since they have a ton more issues that they are paying more attention to, which as a good thing for him. Jace chuckled when she invited him to raid her fridge. “You really shouldn’t offer that to someone who spent the past few weeks eating fast food.”
