What the past couple days have felt like
I feel like people don't talk enough about how insane the ending of Kung Fu Panda is.
There's an almost-universal truism in kids' movies that the hero can't kill anyone. Not even the Big Bad, no matter how warranted it is in the moment or how much the audience wants it. You simply can't do that. Heroes don't kill.
There are exceptions, but this truism is especially universal in the studio that's practically synonymous with kids' films: Disney.
That's why so many Disney villains end up accidentally killing themselves. Usually by falling off of something:
I can only think of four heroes in the entire Disney catalog that deliberately, intentionally choose to kill a sapient, intelligent villain, and all of them were self-defensive and in the heat of the moment, where sparing the villain wasn't an option:
(Note: I have seen most Disney movies, but not all of them)
....and then Dreamworks came along, said "fuck that," and had their goofy, lovable Jack Black character ice a motherfucker just 'cause.
Po has already completely won the fight. The day has been saved. He has Tai Lung at his mercy. Tai Lung is terrified:
And Po's not even reluctant about it. There's no burden of responsibility. He doesn't even give his thoroughly beaten opponent a chance to surrender or be banished or something. They didn't just have Po kill, they had him enjoy it because his method of murder is so wicked cool.
Po is a hero in a kids' movie who not only kills his villain, but fucking executes him. All with that signature Dreamworks smirk on his face:
I have gazed into the abyss, and the abyss said "skadoosh."
Desire to show off and need for validation is back. So here's the picture I took on one of the harsh afternoons of May in Jalgaon. . . . #amaturephotography #mobilephotography #photography #summer #photo #instapic #redmi https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4dAuYlmNZ/?igshid=guqmmlwmhh32
The Mandalorian: Who Are you?
Geralt: I'm you, but I can say "fuck"
The Mandalorian: Well, I have a jet pack.
Geralt: Fuck.
Our #playfulbugger is a rescue from the streets. He is our precious, no matter the diva demeanor. We are lucky to have him and people say he is lucky to have found us. First part is true, not sure about the second part. There's one more dog my mum takes care of in her school. This mama lost her two pups today. I can't stop imagining what life the pups would have had if they had the chance to be adopted. The pups' mama is inconsolable. Monday was shitty when it began. It didn't get any better. I am about to close the lid on it. Hoping tomorrow will be okay. . . . #dogsofinstagram #doggo #dog #puppy #pup #dogstagram #photography #amaturephotography #mobilephotography #picoftheday #paws #instapic #instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B71Gbk3FBFR/?igshid=7z9c7pfoo7vf
Hugo Simberg, The Garden of Death, 1896.
Every time I see this I always wonder what the painter’s intended message was. It looks so pleasant, that middle skeleton looks so happy with its work.
Maybe it’s supposed to be a memento mori, but a comforting and encouraging one.
This is one of the most famous paintings in Finland. There are multiple interpretations of it but they all share the same base idea:
“According to Simberg, the flowers represent people’s souls, the skeletons are aids to Death, and the Garden of Death is a purgatory of sorts for souls waiting for entrance into heaven. This artwork invites the viewer to consider the afterlife, to take comfort in his or her own passing, and to not fear what happens after the body fails to function.”
“It depicts Simberg’s thoughts on afterlife, which is not run by angels but skeletons who take care of the heavenly garden with a gentle hand, while waiting for more “gardeners” to arrive. It is derived from the medieval belief that the dead sleep in a blooming garden.”
“In Simberg’s garden the humble Death-like figures struggle against harsh conditions; the landscape around the garden has burnt yellow, it is dry and barren. The cherished flowers grow in exotic shapes, slowly, requiring constant care. The black-clad figures love their nurslings. The garden is a place where Death is allowed to realize its feelings of affection. The Garden of Death can be seen depicting the impossibility of this love; maybe the flowers are tender and fragile because they can not handle the love of Death. Love has two faces: one of them is the face of devastation.”
Out of all the comments I’ve posted on this site this is my favourite. The notes are just full of people showing pure love to the Finnish Skeleton Gardeners.
WHAT EVEN IS THE TOWEL THOUGH!?
In Taylor Swift’s 2017 song “Look What You Made Me Do”, she says “I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams.” This is foreshadowing to her role in Cats (2019), which will give all its viewers nightmares.
“I think everybody, in every job, wants validation,” he ultimately said, though he wondered whether that desire could be fraught for actors to acknowledge, since they have little to hide behind. “It’s not separate from who I am,” Driver said. “I don’t have an instrument, I don’t play the cello. It’s yourself, so in a way, it’s more vulnerable.” — NY TIMES
