Emma Swan is an heiress of rich, influential parents, and next in line to take over the family business. She’s a bit of a tomboy, much to her mother’s chagrin, but she’s also health-conscious and very active (skiing, biking, horses). Emma gets into an accident, breaks an arm and a collarbone. Her parents are demanding she move back home, but Emma refuses, saying she’ll just hire an assistant who can also double as a private chef. She already has someone to clean the huge house she lives in and the hospital will provide someone to help with the rehab. So with this in mind, Emma starts to look for someone who can live in the house with her, as she needs her (healthy, organic) meals three times a day plus snacks. After arranging for a few candidates to come to her house, they all cook for her following her few instructions and she chooses the best dish without ever seeing the people who have prepared the dishes. Emma particularly enjoys one meal and asks to see the person who prepared it. When Emma sees the woman she’s left speechless. The brunette has to be the most gorgeous woman she’s ever seen and that combined with the way she cooks, Emma wants to hire this Regina person immediately. Only problem is that the woman comes with a kid and Emma isn’t really comfortable around the smaller humans. But she thinks of her parents who are still pressuring her and she gives the woman a week to impress her.

And Regina impresses Emma alright. Her meals are as mouthwatering as the woman herself. Slowly Emma gets to know Regina and the boy, Henry. To her surprise she likes the kid; he’s smart as a whip, respectful and he keep her entertained. And he lets out a few things about Regina’s past that the brunette probably wouldn’t want Emma to know, which kind of makes Emma obsessed in finding out more. She’s like that, she’s curious by nature and everything about this woman is like a puzzle wrapped in a mystery. Once Emma’s parents find out their daughter has permanently hired a new private chef, they come for a visit. They immediately take a dislike to Regina and Henry, thinking she’s there to insinuate herself into Emma’s life. They’re sure she’s trying to befriend Emma and then take advantage of her. “Who is she anyway? What do you know of her past? Where is she from? Does the kid even have a father? How can you trust her?” But Emma is adamant that she herself is the one who is curious and the one trying to befriend the other woman. In an effort to make her parents understand Emma explains how Regina loves horses as well. Though Emma can’t ride, she’d taken Regina and her son to see the horse Emma owns and Emma describes how she and Henry watched as Regina rode the horse like a pro impressing the blonde with her skill.Unfortunately, Emma’s parents immediately think this is Regina trying to grasp a better life - something that’s above her status. They demand Emma fire the woman, but the blonde is stubborn and refuses. She hasn’t had many friends in her life and she’s not about to let this one go. What she absolutely won’t tell her parents is that she’s falling in love with the woman. Regina finally finds out what Emma’s parents think of her and she wants to leave. She is not a social climber; that was her mother not her and Regina’s just looking for away to provide for her and her son. Emma tries to talk Regina out of leaving but the older woman says it’s better if she and Henry leave.What she won’t say is that in a way Emma’s parents are right; it’s not just a job anymore and though she’d never ask anything from Emma, she’s grown to love her. The idea of leaving Emma hurts like hell, but she won’t stay ‘cos she knows she can’t hide her feelings for much longer. And then everyone will think she just wants Emma for her money and that’s far from the truth.Finally, as she watches Regina and Henry pack their things, and desperate to convince Regina to stay, Emma confesses her feelings. Regina, though, smiles sadly and reminds Emma that she has to go and prepare to take over the family business. “That is what you were born to do.” But Emma says she doesn’t care about the family business, she doesn’t care about the money and she doesn’t care about the family status. None of it matters if there’s no one to share it with. And she wants Regina and she wants Henry.

When Regina gave Emma and Henry new memories, she coudn’t bear the thought of them not knowing who she was, of Emma and Henry not remembering how much she loved them, and so she included herself in their new memories.

Of course she can’t risk Emma, and especially Henry, looking for her, so she can’t give them memories where she left them. Instead she makes them think she and Emma married, had Henry and raised him together up until Henry was about ten… which is when the Regina they remember, died.

This is Regina’s way to ensure than they won’t come looking for her, but, should they ever meet again, somehow, they will recognize her.
