She hums in acknowledgement. “Yeah, it’s a good way to get out your aggression. Especially with rough days.” She’s brushing hair out of her face and then letting out a soft laugh. “I’m just checking places out for a friend, seeing which ones would be good for him.”

“I’m afraid I can’t help you there; this isn’t my normal gym. It’s not bad, though, from what I can make out. I especially like the paint job,” he drily jokes.

A beat. “Nope.” An obvious lie, she’s pretty sure he could tell.

He can. “Uh...huh. Do you need a hospital?”

Caitlin did not often leave the lab under any circumstances, save for sleep. It was only under the immense social pressure of her superiors that she’d stepped out for a proper cup of tea that afternoon. With her prize secured, she stepped past the other patrons in search of sugar when she heard a voice to her left inquire something of her. She peered over at the man and quickly complied. “Oh, uh… Sure. Actually, I was looking for them myself. Let me just…” She straightened and glanced around the establishment, clicking her tongue before she finally spotted a container of honey on a nearby table. “There’s a table over here, if you’ll follow me. It’s not nearly as crowded and there’s less spill risk.”

Matt smiled gratefully, carefully standing and holding his cup in one hand as he wrapped the fingers of his other hand around his cane, turning a little towards her. “Thank you, I appreciate it. May I...?” He held the hand holding his cane out, just a little, around shoulder level. “It’s easier than an impromptu game of Marco Polo,” he jested, tone sheepish.

Kara smiled. She really loved this whole heroing business. “Coming down!” She chirped, dropping carefully down the manhole and floating slowly until she reached the bottom. “Let’s get you out of here, sir.”

Great. She could fucking fly. This was bullshit. Matt groaned a little as he put his hand against the wall against which he was sitting, and slowly, painstakingly, managed to lever himself up into a standing position. Why was it slow and painstaking? Because no sooner had he put his foot upon the ground than his suspicions had been confirmed; he had indeed done something to his ankle in the fall, and he cursed himself, swearing under his breath as he tested it again and was proven right by the familiar twinge that told him he’d twisted something in it. He couldn’t afford to think too hard on it right now, however; there was a woman with a cape flying down in front of him, and he had a cover to maintain. “Thank you, I appreciate it. Uh, you didn’t happen to see my cane when you were out there, did you?”

‘Doll tilts his head the opposite way, mimicking the man. “Yes, of course, why wouldn’t I be? Oh, do you think it’s strange for me to be wondering about clouds? It’s only natural to be curious!”

“No, it’s...never mind. Ignore me. Continue to wonder about clouds if you so choose.”

“It’s okay, I’m not offended,” she says, and it’s the truth. “I’m okay. How are you? Looks like you have a lot of aggression there.” She’s rolling closer to him, a concerned look on her face.

“Rough day in court,” is Matt’s only given explanation, the wraps around his hands tugging at themselves as he raises his bottle to his lips and takes a drink. “At least it’s a certified method of channeling rage,” he smiles sheepishly as he puts the cap back on the bottle. “How about you? What brings you to the gym?”

“Well, I mean, the both of you are talking, so if you can’t hear him, then obvs I’m seeing things. I mean, that’s chill, it’s totally cool. And me? I’m fine. Totally fine, not like I have a concussion or anything, nope, not at all.”

Matt went through his phone as he sipped his tea, listening to the first few words of each text before deleting basically any that were from people that he knew, that weren’t obviously urgent and important. Honestly, how hard could it be to just leave a voicemail? Oh. Oh, this tea wasn’t sweet enough. And no honey or sugar on the table. So, frowning, he put his phone away and waited until he heard footsteps, whence he cleared his throat, “Excuse me, can you direct me to uh…sugar? Or honey, perhaps?”

“Yeah, okay, not to like… alarm you or anything, but now there are like… two of you. You don’t have a twin or something? Or like a new you popped out of your body? I’m trying to think of the word because I know there’s like some scientific word for that or something but I can’t.” She sways for a second before reaching out to grab the wall. “Yeah, I’m like totally okay, though, but I thought you should know there’s two of you.” Yeah, okay, Kate, just lie about the fact you have a concussion, everything is totally fine.

“I might be mistaken, but I’m reasonably sure that I’m the only one here right now. Unless someone else is just being...really quiet. Are you alright?”

“Not generally, no...” Matt cocks his head. “Excuse me, sir, are you okay?”

“Oh, yes, sorry. It’s Babs, we met a while back. I’m the chick in the wheelchair and we complained about disabilities for a while.”

“Oh, of course... Sorry, it can be hard to place people. How’re you doing?” He’s ever-so-polite as he steadies the bag, turning 90º anti-clockwise and crossing to the bench which he feels out for, catching his water bottle with his fingertips and putting his hand out so he can sit down and take a drink.

“Um, the head banging?” Kara answered, though she knew full-well it was highly likely the question was more rhetorical than anything. Kara narrowed her eyes, x-raying down the manhole to see what she was working with. No ladder? Seriously? This whole situation was a mess. She shouldn’t have any problems getting down there and reaching him though, she thought, doing the calculations in her head for a smooth landing. “Sir? My name’s Supergirl. I’m going to come down and help you out of there, if that’s okay with you.”

Matt sighed a long, drawn-out sigh as he tipped his head back against the wall of the manhole. Part of him, actually most of him, wanted to decline the offer for help. But he knew that this was just part of his Matt identity. He couldn’t Daredevil right now. “...Thank you.” This was so fucking embarrassing.

Elektra breathed out a sigh, let her shoulders drop before she moved, dodged the punch aimed at her, rolled and threw her elbow toward his throat. Just because Matt was sloppy didn’t mean she had to be. She tried to remain relaxed but this was all coiled muscle and tense hands.

He choked at the elbow to his throat and stumbled, heaving a sigh. No. No, he couldn’t do this. “...Okay, you’ve made your point. I’m sloppy. I can’t concentrate.”

“You could say that,” she says with a laugh. “It’s more seeing other people, really.”

“Is that so? I’m sorry...have we met?”

“Yeah, I’ll give you that, but if people are going to complain about metas they might as well complain about the whole damn city.”

“Are you saying that metas only exist in the city? Of course not; that would be ridiculous. How about complaining about the entire country? World? No, of course not; Thor exists. Universe.”

“How about ninjas?” On cue, approximately twenty ninjas melted out of the shadows, varying weapons glinting in the night.

Kara had thought she’d seen movement in this alley before she’d landed. Sometimes that meant crime. But just as often that didn’t mean crime, so she’d landed all the same and now there was no one in sight. If Kara was someone else she might have been satisfied with that… But there was also a repetitive thud in the distance. She focused her hearing on the sound. At first she couldn’t quite place it. And then it hit her very suddenly that it sounded not unlike the frustrated thump of foreheads against desks in the office after rough interactions with Cat Grant. “Hello?” She called, sweeping the alley. Her eyes were attracted by the white cane lying near the alley’s dumpster… and then to the open manhole beyond. Seriously? No cover in sight? She was going to have to take this up with the city. Kara leaned over the hole in the ground, “Is someone down there?”

Well...shit. Matt stopped hitting his head against the wall as soon as she called out, hoping she’d just...go away. But then she didn’t, and she was asking if someone was down here, and at this point, she probably knew that he was there so all he could do was grudgingly drag the words out; “...What gave me away?”
