does anyone else remember when peoples talking point against asexuality being a queer identity was to make up a cisgender heterosexual but aromantic man who wanted to get in to all the lgbt society meetings or was that just an embarrassing thing people i knew did

Even if someone totally straight and cisgender decides to start sitting around the queer folk and hanging out... literally how is this a bad and terrible thing? Maybe they're questioning. Maybe someone they love just came out and they're trying to learn more. Maybe they're lonely and saw a group of objectively cool people and sat down with them. Who even fucking cares.

So what if they sit in on a meeting about people discussing what life is like being queer. You know what happens when they do? They learn about what life is like for queer folk. How exactly is this a bad thing? How? What is being damaged here?

Generally the logic was "well, if he's a cis man who doesn't want love and just wants to fuck he's going to hit on everyone and make them uncomfortable", which as a strain of logic kind of requires thinking that sexual harassment is a sort of sexual orientation possessed by cishet men and nobody else, and that queer people do not and can not sexually harass people. And like... No.
