Sanyo Ladies

How beautiful!

These ladies are from two manuals for a Sanyo washing machine and radio released in 1960s.

I think the Sanyo-manufactured instruction manuals of the time would have included illustrations of a Western lady like these. The “dreams” of the Japanese people of that time may be expressed here.

Japanese Type Setting

Typesetting with metal type.

1st… The combination of sans-serif numbers, Gothic headings, and Ming-cho style text is beautiful.

2nd… A punctuation mark that is superscripted because the metal type was accidentally rotated.

3rd… European type (“ON” and “OFF”) shifted slightly upward. Was the height of the body different from that of Japanese type?

金属活字による組版。

1枚め…サンセリフ体の数字、ゴシック体の見出し、明朝体の本文が美しい。

2枚め…金属活字が誤って回転したために上付きになった句点。

3枚め…「ON」「OFF」の欧文活字はすこし上にずれている。日本語活字とはボディの高さが違っていたのだろうか？

After a month

This is my first post in over a month. Actually, due to a mistake by Tumblr management, my account was suspended because it got caught by “anti-spam control”. I heard this kind of thing happens sometimes. Anyhow, as you can see, everything is back to normal! Well, thank goodness. I will continue to build my “city” of retro instructions in a small way.

A CITY OF MANUALS OR SOMETHING

These days, I feel like an unclear city began to appear in my mind because of my everyday posts on this site about retro manuals.

The city would consist of many gadgets from the manuals I collected, but their appearances wouldn’t be the same as real.

They would be more. Because the manuals “explain” more than real.

I mean, the manuals make me imagine the gadgets would be much better, much bigger, or have much more dreamy features. I feel them more futuristic through their manuals.

I hope I will share this feeling with anyone, making a zine or something like that.

説明書の都市、のようなもの

毎日レトロ説明書に関してサイトに投稿しているせいか、このところ頭のなかでぼんやりと、ある都市の姿が立ち上がってくるのを感じる。 その都市はたぶん僕が集めた説明書に載っているモノたちから成っていて、だけどモノたちは現実のホンモノとはちょっとちがうと思う。 ホンモノ以上だ、たぶんそういうことになる。というのも、説明書はホンモノ以上のことを「説明」しているものだから。 つまり、レトロ説明書を読んでいると、想像力が掻き立てられて、なんだかこういう気がするわけだ―そのモノは実際よりずっといいとか、ずっと大きいとか、ずっとたくさんの夢みたいな機能があるとか。説明書を通すと、モノは未来的に感じられる。 いつか、この感覚を、ZINEなんかをつくって共有できたらいいなと思う。
